After Quinn relapsed in 2021, neighbors in Weymouth and Quincy continued to
But on April 7, just days after Quinn's latest cancer-free scan, Jarlath had a seizure at an airport in Ireland, leading doctors to discover the mass in his brain. Diagnosed with glioblastoma, Jarlath was told he has at most three or four years left to live, but he remains powerfully optimistic about his condition, his family, and the road ahead.

'I have my faculties about me, I have my wits about me, and after I finish treatment, I will work and get my health back and live my life to the fullest,' he said.

Family is grateful to have each other, mom says
After Jarlath spent two weeks at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital and another two at Mass General, the family said they're more grateful than ever for simple activities like Friday movie nights, frozen yogurt outings, and swim meets.
Jarlath's wife, Tara, said that during Quinn's cancer treatments, the family got closer and learned how to support each other amid their fear and anxiety. Now, she said, the sanctity of their home will help her husband.
'It seems like such an innocuous thing, but the safety of our home and the family, it was a good thing to have,' Tara, 47, said.
'In hindsight, it was there'
Jarlath, who emigrated to the US from the Dublin area in 2001, has worked as a carpenter and apprentice instructor for decades. He always prided himself on quickly learning the names of all his students.
But earlier this year, he noticed he'd have to look at his roll sheet multiple times during class. He also had trouble concentrating on home improvement projects, which had never been a problem for Jarlath, who said he was always 'go, go, go' with his tools around the house.
His wife and a few friends noticed him going about life more slowly, he said, but he chalked it up to normal fatigue. Now he realizes his worsening memory and exhaustion were tell-tale signs of brain cancer.
'I just put it down to my workload or overdoing it,' he said. 'In hindsight, it was there, but it wasn't bad enough that I knew.'

Tara said that when she got the call that Jarlath had suffered a seizure at the Dublin airport, her mind immediately turned to the worst possibility.
'I knew right away that it was glioblastoma,' she said.

'We know what we're getting into'
On Friday, the family of four settled onto their couch in Weymouth to watch 'Jurassic Park,' happy to have Jarlath at home after nearly a month in hospitals, Tara said.
They'll continue to enjoy every day and make memories together, Jarlath said, even as experts search for a link between the brain cancers that have struck father and son.
Jarlath said that although chemoradiation therapy will be difficult, he's not afraid or worried.
'It sucks, but we know what we're getting into,' he said.
This week, he's happy to be recovering well from brain surgery, saying he feels 'better than I did last week.'
He's also enjoying running, weight training, and cheering on his 11-year-old daughter Maggie, whom Jarlath described as a 'phenomenal swimmer.'
'People have heart attacks or strokes and they don't get a do-over,' Jarlath said. 'With me, I'm given an opportunity to live a little bit longer, and do more with my family, so I'll take that and run with it, and make the most of every day I have.'

Dinosaurs Had Cancer, Too, According to a Staggering New Study

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: Over the years, scientists have found examples of cancerous tumors within the fossilized bones of ancient dinosaurs. A new study analyzes the fossil of the duck-billed hadrosaurid Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus and found proteins that help pinpoint molecular marks of disease in ancient species. This animal's particular cancer—a benign tumor of the jaw called ameloblastoma—also impacts humans, so scientists are exploring whether understanding the disease in its ancient context could lead to novel therapies in our current epoch. Whether depicted in textbooks or Hollywood films, dinosaurs are often portrayed as powerful beings with sharp jaws, thick hides, and indomitable strength. But just like us, it turns out, dinosaurs were susceptible to a variety of illnesses, diseases, and cancers. Over the years, scientists have actually discovered cancerous tumors clinging to fossilized bone, giving us insight into the ancient life of this deadly malady. In 2016, a team of U.S. and Romanian scientists announced the discovery of a tumorous fossil belonging to a 70-million-year-old duck-billed hadrosaurid (Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus) that once roamed the Hateg Basin in present-day Romania. Finding tumors along with dinosaur fossils is relatively rare, and cancer specialists at Imperial College London and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in the U.K. had different interests in this particular specimen. 'We wanted to see if this tumor in the dinosaur could give us any information about any parallel with human cancers,' Biancastella Cereser, a co-author of the study from Imperial College London, told The Independent, 'because the tumor that this dinosaur had was an ameloblastoma, a benign tumor in the jaw, which humans have as well.' The results of their inquiry, published in the journal Biology, found that using advanced techniques like scanning electron microscopy (SEM) could recover structures resembling red blood cells, proving that soft tissues and cellular components are more common in fossils than previously believed. And before any Jurassic Park fans ask, that does not include DNA. 'Jurassic Park isn't right, because what they said is dinosaur DNA could be recovered and cloned to resurrect dinosaurs, but we can't get DNA out of this because it's broken down by weathering and time,' Justin Stebbing from ARU told The Independent. Luckily, proteins found in calcified tissues are much more stable, and provide the perfect opportunity for studying the ancient history of cancers that inflict us today. By analyzing how cancers impacted extinct species, the authors hypothesize that they might be able to uncover new methods of cancer suppression. 'Dinosaurs, as long-lived, large-bodied organisms, present a compelling case for investigating how species managed cancer susceptibility and resistance over millions of years,' the authors wrote. 'The identification of tumors, such as the ameloblastoma in Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus, suggests that cancer was not an anomaly but a recurring biological challenge in prehistoric ecosystems.' The researchers are also stressing the importance of preserving specimens for molecular investigations like this. They hope that the information hidden in the fossils of these long-dead animals can now help protect the lifeforms that inherited the planet these dinos once called home. 'Our research, using relatively underused methods, invites further exploration that could hold the key to future discoveries that could benefit humans,' Stebbing said in a press statement. 'It is crucial that long-term fossil conservation efforts are co-ordinated to ensure that future researchers have access to specimens suitable for cutting-edge molecular investigations.' Nonprofit and restaurant team up to feed NYCHA families without gas

LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) — Dozens of residents who live in two Lower East Side NYCHA buildings are struggling to cook, with no gas service. 90-year-old Isreal Muniz has three hot plates set up in his kitchen just to make dinner, with no gas service. More Local News Vernette Quick and Kanielle Hernandez say there are two buildings full of frustration. They are part of the tenant association at the Bracetti Plaza, a NYCHA development on the Lower East Side. But this time, agitation has been replaced with action. Hernandez says it was just before Easter, a gas leak took out gas service to both of their buildings. A non-profit called Vision Urbana sprang into action, partnering with a restaurant called Casa Adela on Ave C. More than one hundred meals will be delivered to families each day, Monday through Friday. The restaurant is named after Adela Fargas, a beloved matriarch and community champion. Her family says her life was devoted to service. Casa Adela also has a gas outage and is using electric stoves, but the staff is still serving the community in need. PIX11 reached out to NYCHA about this gas outrage. A NYCHA spokesperson tells PIX11 News,'Gas service interruptions and restoration work are a matter of public safety and involve multiple partners and steps, including shutting off service, making necessary repairs, inspections, and coordinating with the service vendors, in order to safely restore service as quickly as possible. These processes are currently underway at Bracetti Plaza.' If you have a story, reach out to Monica Morales at monica@ Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
