Sanusi to write congratulatory letter if Nurul wins, despite advice not to meddle

ALOR STAR: Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said he would write a congratulatory letter to former Permatang Pauh MP, Nurul Izzah Anwar, if she wins the PKR deputy president post in the upcoming party election.
"I hope Nurul Izzah wins, because she doesn't criticise me (during the campaign). If she wins, I'll write a 'letter to dinda (an affectionate term in Malay)'," he said jokingly, during a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting at Wisma Darul Aman here today.
Nurul Izzah, the eldest daughter of Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is in a straight fight against incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli for the party's number two position in the election, set to take place on 23 May.
Sanusi said that he was generally reluctant to comment on the PKR polls, in deference to the advice of Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who had urged party members not to interfere in the internal affairs of other political parties.
However, the Perikatan Nasional election director said it was difficult to avoid being drawn into political debates by rivals.
"What can I do? I'm popular—I can't run away from that. If you want to gain popularity, you attack Sanusi.
"I've become a punching bag for those chasing instant fame, whether it's netizens or individuals hiding behind fake social media accounts. But they must be ready to face my response," he said.
During a recent campaign rally in Kedah, candidates for the PKR central leadership said that Sanusi would prefer Nurul Izzah to win the deputy presidency, suggesting it would make it easier for him to attack the party.
In response, Sanusi said: "I hope the PKR election proceeds smoothly. Whoever wins should be the one who is better for the country. If that's Nurul Izzah, then it should be her; if Rafizi is the better leader, then it will be him. I really can't comment on another party's internal affairs."

External parties behind push for Hadi to step down, say PAS leaders

Abdul Hadi Awang, a seven-term MP for Marang, has been president of PAS since June 2002. PETALING JAYA : Two PAS leaders have dismissed claims that there is a push within the party for its long-time president, Abdul Hadi Awang, to relinquish the post at the party elections in September. Johor PAS Youth chief Ahmad Nawfal Mahfodz claimed that such a call had never been raised at neither the state nor central leadership level. 'Clearly this push is coming from outside PAS. It's evident that some parties are uneasy with the performance of PAS under Hadi's leadership,' he told FMT. Terengganu PAS leader Hanafiah Mat also said calls for Hadi not to defend the PAS presidency came from outside the party, and not among its members or supporters. 'Although his health is not that great right now, he is mentally sharper than others,' he said. Speculation has emerged that, for the first time in a decade, the posts of PAS president and deputy president might be contested at the party elections in September. The last time the top two posts were contested was in 2015 when Hadi defeated Ahmad Awang for the president's post, and Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man ousted Mohamad Sabu for the deputy presidency. Hadi is a seven-term MP for Marang and a former Terengganu menteri besar. Sinar Harian recently reported that Hadi had conveyed his intention to relinquish the post at a PAS top leadership retreat, citing health reasons. Hadi has suffered declining health in recent years, undergoing dialysis and being admitted to hospital several times. Hanafiah said the party still needed Hadi at the helm, citing his commanding support from the grassroots to the top leadership levels. The Chukai assemblyman also believes Hadi can lead the Islamic party to even greater success at the polls, after its best-ever haul of 43 parliamentary seats in the 2022 general election. 'I'm confident that 'Tok Guru' can lead us towards winning more than 70 parliamentary seats and, God-willing, we will govern Malaysia,' he said.

‘Hadi not stepping down'

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic) has shown no signs that he is stepping down, says party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. This came following a report in Malay daily Sinar Harian that Abdul Hadi had indicated during a recent PAS leaders' retreat that he was stepping away from the post he has helmed for 21 years due to health reasons. There is also reportedly speculation that the president and deputy president's posts might be contested during the party election in September. Takiyuddin said if Abdul Hadi had given such indications during the retreat, he would be the first to know. 'He has not said anything or shown any sign that he does not want to continue, or that he does not want to be nominated again as president,' the Kota Baru MP said when contacted. 'Neither has there been any sign that his leadership is no longer needed. As long as he is capable, he must continue to lead.' In its report, Sinar Harian claimed that Abdul Hadi's wishes to step down have sparked internal discussions about who should take over with some quarters suggesting that it should be the party's number two, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. Takiyuddin said the retreat did not touch on Abdul Hadi's post or his health. 'He did not say anything about relinquishing his post during the retreat. We talked about a lot of issues but this was not one of them,' he said. The Marang MP, added Takiyuddin, is still attending party meetings regularly as president, the last being the party's central committee meeting last month. 'He has never missed any of our party meetings and he even calls special meetings with the leadership when he is back in Terengganu. 'On June 15, he is scheduled to launch a book by (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad,' he said. Abdul Hadi suffered health complications in June 2023 and was admitted to Putrajaya Hospital after experiencing shortness of breath before being transferred to the National Heart Institute for further treatment. Those wishing to contest for central committee posts at the party elections in September must secure a set number of nominations from the divisions. 'For PAS, the top two posts must be occupied by ulama as they are steeped in knowledge about Islam,' said Takiyuddin.
