Archaeologists Discovered a Massive Haul of 2,600-Year Old Egyptian Jewelry
Jewelry was an important part of ancient Egyptian culture.
Excavation at the Karnak temple found a 2,600-year-old pot filled with gold jewelry, beads, and statues.
The statues of Egyptian gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu may have been worn as amulets.
Despite their hierarchical society, jewelry was for everyone in ancient Egypt. The poorest farmers and the richest pharaohs were all likely adorned (or at least buried) with jewelry. However, these accessories weren't just for display—they were thought to have 'apotropaic' powers, or powers to ward off evil.
For the living, Egyptians thought jewelry would fend off disease and danger. For the dead, jewelry was meant to protect them for the rest of eternity. According to the American Research Center in Egypt, even just a single bead could act as a window into ancient Egyptian culture.
A recent excavation on the Karnak temple complex near Luxor, Egypt—which developed across a millennia, predominantly between the 12th and 20th dynasties, and prominently features the Temple of Amun-Ra—resulted in archaeologists discovering more than just a bead. It uncovered a whole treasure trove. The project was conducted by the Egyptian-French Centre for the Study of Karnak Temples (CFEETK) in collaboration with the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
At the dig site, archaeologists discovered a broken pot filled with gold jewelry, statues of gods, beads, and a brooch. Experts believe the vessel is approximately 2,600 years old, dating back to Egypt's 26th dynasty. Researchers found the artifacts in good condition, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
The statues uncovered during the excavation depict the god Amun, the goddess Mut, and their son Khonsu side by side. Amun (meaning 'the hidden one') is often considered the father of pharaohs and king of gods. In the New Kingdom, Amun merged with sun god Ra (sometimes spelled 'Re'), becoming both the visible and invisible god, which appealed to the Egyptian ideal of balance. Experts believe the figurines are part of an amulet or another piece of jewelry worn around the neck. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, all artifacts found at the site will be restored and likely displayed at the Luxor museum.
This excavation was a small part of ongoing work at the Karnak temple complex, according to Jérémy Hourdin, head of the French's side of the project. Sherif Fathy—Minister of Tourism and Antiquities—praised the collaboration between the teams, emphasizing the role of their work on some of the 'most important' ancient Egyptian temples in the world.
'It is a very important discovery,' Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said,'because it provides a clearer understanding of the historical development of the Karnak Temples during the first millennium B.C.E.'

Avicenna.ai scoops CE marks for two AI fracture detection tools
French artificial intelligence (AI)-based medical imaging company has secured CE marks for a pair of radiologic screening tools to detect fractures from CT scans. CINA-VCF Quantix is an AI algorithm is used to detect unsuspected vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) in patients undergoing CT scans for unrelated conditions, while CINA-CSpine is designed for the detection and triage of cervical spine fractures. Both tools gained 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2024, while the tools' receipt of CE mark follows clearance on five other AI tools in 2024 under the EU's Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR). For use in patients aged 50 and above who are undergoing patients undergoing CT scans of the chest or abdomen for other conditions, CINA-VCF Quantix automatically labels vertebrae and calculates vertebral height loss ratios in the thoracic and lumbar spine. In cases where a vertebral height loss ratio exceeds 20%–25%, a figure indicative of a moderate- to severe VCF, the algorithm generates prompts notifying radiologists to report their early findings in support of proactive patient care, Avicenna stated. co-founder and CEO, Cyril Di Grandi commented: "Osteoporotic vertebral fractures can have a profound impact on patients' quality of life. "By encouraging the reporting of VCF presence and severity, CINA-VCF Quantix has the potential to make a real difference in long-term patient outcomes." CINA-CSpine is designed to automatically flag suspected acute cervical spine fractures through radiologists' existing systems. Di Grandi continued: "The launch of CINA-CSpine in the European market marks a significant step forward in trauma care. By reducing the time between scan and diagnosis, we're helping radiologists catch cervical spine fractures faster and more reliably.' A 2023 report on AI in healthcare by GlobalData forecasts that global revenue for AI platforms across the sector will reach a valuation of almost $19bn by 2027, with the radiology field seeing some of the highest implementation of AI technologies. Research indicates that thoracolumbar fusion procedures, one of the most common spine surgery types, are in growing demand, with thoracolumbar procedures such as anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and posterior lumbar fusion (PLF) in the US projected to see respective rises from 46,903 to 55,528 and 248,416 to 297,994 between 2020 and 2040. According to GlobalData, the spinal fusion market segment, of which thoracolumbar fusion is a part, is growing at a CAGR of 2.3% and forecast to reach a valuation of around $11.23bn by 2033. Government moves to dismantle decade-long stance for major energy production: 'This will be a sea-change policy shift'
Germany has let go of its long-standing resistance to nuclear power in what's seen as one of the country's biggest steps toward unlocking more clean energy sources. As the Financial Times reported, officials from both Germany and France say that Berlin will no longer stand in the way when it comes to treating nuclear power the same as renewable energy resources in European Union legislation. This move puts an end to a major disagreement between France and Germany, which had been stalling many key energy decisions in the EU. Germany began to phase out nuclear energy in 2011 after years of discussions and shut down its last three nuclear power stations in 2023. The news comes in the wake of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's election in early May. In the past, Merz has publicly criticized Germany's decision to phase out nuclear power, arguing that it had prevented the country from accessing a reliable and affordable energy source. "This will be a sea-change policy shift," a German official said. Though Merz has not made plans to reopen any nuclear power stations, he has signaled an interest in investing in alternative energy resources. This has gone a long way in soothing any troubled waters with France in regards to nuclear energy programs. "The Germans are telling us: We will be very pragmatic on the issue of nuclear power," a senior French diplomat told the Financial Times. Nuclear energy does not produce direct carbon emissions but can have several environmental impacts. This includes radioactive waste generation, water consumption, and the potential for accidents. However, nuclear power plants have the highest capacity factor compared to other energy sources. Nuclear power can be a very energy-dense source, with a small amount of nuclear fuel needed to generate a large amount of electricity. This can ultimately lead to lower electricity bills for consumers. Guntram Wolff, senior fellow at Bruegel, applauded the move from Germany. "It's a welcome rapprochement that will make the topic of energy easier in the EU," Wolff said. "Politically, Merz is also thinking about the nuclear umbrella." Which of these factors would most effectively convince you to support nuclear energy projects in your area? Some alcohol choices like dry red wine and clear liquor are less harmful than others, experts say
Print Close By Gretchen Eichenberg Published June 05, 2025 You may have heard that red wine is good for your heart health — or that vodka is a better option than darker liquors like bourbon. A recent study in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology even found that Champagne could reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest. Yet according to the World Health Organization and others, no alcohol is considered healthy for the body. A few factors, however, such as the amount consumed and its sugar content, could offer drinkers a slightly less damaging choice. "There was a time when studies showed that the French had less heart disease than we do in the U.S.," Dr. John Flores, a board-certified internal medicine specialist based in Dallas, Texas, told Fox News Digital. IS RED WINE GOOD FOR YOUR HEART? CONSIDER THIS WISDOM FROM A CARDIAC SURGEON "But now we realize they just weren't drinking as much, and now we know that any amount of alcohol can be damaging to you." Ethanol is the intoxicating agent in all alcoholic beverages. It's a central nervous system depressant that produces effects like euphoria, decreased anxiety and impaired cognitive and motor function, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "In the short term, the alcohol goes to your brain, slows your thinking and alters your mood by changing the neurotransmitters in your brain," Flores said. "Long term, we know there's an increased risk for certain cancers with any amount of alcohol, even one a day. People who have inherited risk from family history and that kind of thing are going to have more risk." WINE SALES SLIPPING IN US AS MORE AMERICANS LEAVE ALCOHOL BEHIND Some of the risks increased by alcohol, said Flores, include colorectal cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, oral and pharyngeal cancer – and damage to the heart that is associated with drinking. "There's no reason to think that one's better than the other," Flores said. "Except for maybe calories or how fast you drink them." Kelly Springer, a registered dietitian based in Skaneateles, New York, shared her recommendations for drinking wine, liquor and beer. "Dry red wine in moderation ranks highest with me because it is lower in sugar compared to other wines," Springer told Fox News Digital. "It does contain the polyphenol antioxidants like resveratrol, which has a little bit of that heart-protective benefit." NOT ONLY DOES BEER TASTE GREAT, THERE ARE HEALTH BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH IT, TOO: EXPERT However, understanding serving size is key to any positive health effects, she said. "Moderation means one 15-ounce glass for women or two for men," she said. Springer said her runner-up to dry red wine is clear liquor, such as vodka, gin and tequila. "The reason that's a solid choice is because it is going to be lower in calories – only about 95 to 100 calories per 1 1/2 ounce shot. And it doesn't have any sugar or carbs if served straight." CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER But drinking clear liquors in sugary cocktails, Springer warned, can quickly cancel out any "better-for-you" factors in the alcohol. "Think margaritas, frozen drinks, anything neon-colored," she said. "These kinds of things are the worst for overall health. A lot of people are unaware that those are going to bring in a ton of extra calories." Sugar leads back to chronic disease by way of inflammation, Springer said. For more Lifestyle articles, visit "When we have more sugar than our bodies need for energy, it gets stored as fat," Springer said. "That can add up over time and that can cause some inflammatory markers." When it comes to beer, there's a wide range of options in terms of calories, said Springer. She recommends using apps like CalorieKing or MyFitnessPal to track the contents. "All light beers are not the same," she said. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP "Be a smart consumer. Know what you are drinking," she said. "There are so many non-alcoholic alternatives now, but many are loaded with sugar — so choose better versions." Print Close URL
