Ellie Scotney is where she belongs on Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano supercard

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Madison Square Garden, it does not get much better than that for any fighter and next month Ellie Scotney defends her three world titles in that hallowed ring.
It is an unimaginable achievement for a kid from Lewisham who has had to battle every inch of the way to reach the top. Though she was a good amateur and part of the Team GB set-up, she chose to turn pro rather than putting all her chips in the Olympic basket.
That route is not for everyone and turning over when she did looks like an even better decision now. Though it has been hard generating momentum in the pro ranks, she is a fighter to her boot laces and stuck at it.
The New York assignment against Yamileth Mercardo is only her 11th fight and her first abroad. She won the first of her three belts, the IBF super bantamweight crown, in only her seventh fight.
Mercardo is also a tough kid, heavy handed and cock-sure. She thinks she is going to roll over the top of Ellie. Her shots are wild and heavy. She believes nothing can stop her, but she could not be more wrong.
I watch Scotney working on the pads with Shane. She picks things up so quickly. She blocks, slips, rolls her head like a veteran. She does not rely on knockout power. She is super slick with a great jab and throws lots of punches.
This could turn out to be her toughest assignment. The WBO and IBO belts are on the line as well as the IBF crown, but she is ready for that because tough fights are she has known.
She is sharing the all-female bill with some great fighters, headed by Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano. She thoroughly deserves her place among the big names. To fight where Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier twice is an incredible privilege. The centre of gravity has shifted to Las Vegas and Saudi Arabia but nothing resonates like the Garden.
Though the eyes are drawn to the likes of Taylor, Serrano and Alycia Baumgardner, I'm certain when people leave the arena they will be talking about Scotney with reverence.
She is old school, loves the game, loves the work, and is absolutely committed. We are so proud to have her in our gym. She represents the McGuigan brand in a most extraordinary way.
And this is her reward, her name in lights in New York City, a night she will never forget and one that we believe with make her reputation.

Faith Kipyegon believes a woman running a sub-four minute mile is close

The Kenyan was looking to shave at least 7.65 seconds off her world-record time of 4:07.64, set in 2023, and needed to run each of her four laps an average of nearly two seconds faster. The 31-year-old mother was flanked by a number of pacemakers, including British Olympians Georgia Hunter-Bell, Jemma Reekie and Elliot Giles at the the Stade Charlety, carefully chosen by the Kenyan's team from among 100 potential stadia for optimal conditions. Kenya's Faith Kipyegon is a three-time Olympic champion (PA) 'I'm exhausted,' said Kipyegon, speaking on Nike's official YouTube channel, which also live-streamed the event. 'I'm tired, but I'm feeling good. I've tried. That is why I came here. I would like to be the first woman to run under four minutes, but I've proven that it's possible. 'It's only a matter of time before I think it comes our way, even if it's not me, it will come one day. 'I will not lose hope. I will still go for it.' Kipyegon's effort was still good enough for the fastest mile run by a woman in history, and 1.22 seconds faster than her own best. Though she did cross the line quicker than her world record, set at the Monaco Diamond League meet, it will not officially count as the 'Breaking4' event was not an official competition, and the Kenyan employed the use of male pacemakers, among other reasons. Her specially-designed equipment included a Nike fly suit, a bespoke bra and a first of its kind Victory 2 Elite FK spike, weighing about 21 grams lighter than the shoes she wore to break the world record. 'This was really special,' added Kipyegon. 'I did not expect to see so many people, but I have proved to the world that everything is possible.' Kipyegon was out of the competitive arena for 21 months after the birth of her daughter, Alyn, in 2018, which required a caesarean section. Asked what message she wanted to send her daughter and girls watching, she said: 'I think I will tell them we are not limited. We can limit ourselves with our thoughts, but I think it is possible to try everything in our lives and prove to the world that we are strong and we keep pushing. 'Thank you (to my team, my pacemakers) for helping me to achieve what many people think is impossible. I think we have proved them wrong. We keep on moving.' Keely Hodgkinson says Faith Kipyegon has 'an aura' (John Walton/PA) British 800 metres Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, who was part of the broadcast team, said: 'She's got aura. I think that was incredible to watch. She was locked in, she gave it absolutely everything. 'She still believes she is going to go out there and get closer and closer, but it's that important message that she has opened that barrier, she's left a legacy whether it happened today or not. People are going to think, maybe it is (possible) and we're going to work even harder to get close to it.'

British duo have unfinished business at Winter Olympics

Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat are among the first 10 Team GB athletes confirmed for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games. Dodds, Team GB's only defending champion, and Mouat, whose men's team are defending world champions, aim to improve on their fourth-place mixed doubles finish in Beijing. Mouat's men's curling team will feature Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie, and Hammy McMillan, with Kyle Waddell as alternate. Dodds will compete with a new women's team led by Olympic debutant Rebecca Morrison, alongside Sophie Jackson, Sophie Sinclair, and alternate Fay Henderson. Eve Muirhead, who won gold with Dodds in Beijing and is now retired, will serve as Team GB's Chef de Mission in Milan.
