KUALA BERANG: Police recorded 12,110 cases of online fraud or 'scam' throughout the country in the first three months of this year, involving losses of RM573.7 million.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director, Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa said the number of cases from January to March showed an increase compared to the last three months of last year, namely October to December, which recorded 10,715 cases involving losses of RM519.9 million.
'In Terengganu, 1,251 cases of online fraud with a loss value of RM35.7 million were recorded throughout 2024, compared to only 1,139 cases (loss value of RM24 million) throughout 2023,' he told reporters after conducting a working visit to the Ajil police station, here today.
Rohaimi said online fraud crimes include telecommunications crimes, e-finance crimes, 'love-scam', e-commerce crimes, non-existent loans, and non-existent investments.
He said the increase in these cases was due, among other things, to the rapid development of technology and the shift in today's lifestyle which is focused on the use of online applications.
In addition, he said the rapid development of information technology and artificial intelligence (AI) was also identified as a factor in the increase in online fraud cases.
'Criminals are now also taking advantage of technology such as fake digital identity generators, fake websites, automated chatboxes, and 'deepfake' technology to deceive victims.
'Generative AI also enables the creation of content that appears authentic and convincing, making it difficult for users to distinguish between genuine and fraudulent communications,' he said.
He said in this regard, the public is advised to take preventive measures such as not clicking on any dubious links received through short messaging systems, WhatsApps, Telegram applications and so on, and not sharing banking information with unknown parties.

We've not detained 80 haj pilgrims at KLIA, say cops

PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman has refuted talk that it has detained 80 haj pilgrims who were stranded at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport after they failed to get the necessary travel documents to enter Mecca. 'This is not true,' said Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Comm Datuk Muhammed Hasbullah Ali, referring to a news report about the detention. He said that a police task force which conducted 'Ops Haji Terkandas' had found the group of stranded pilgrims on June 2 at the airport, waiting for someone with the title 'Datuk' who was supposed to hand them the relevant visas which would enable them to perform the pilgrimage. 'However, those visas were never received,' he said. In a statement yesterday, Comm Muhammed Hasbullah also said a couple had lodged a police report that they had submitted their passports to two individuals who offered them free haj packages by a so-called travel agency. 'They were promised a flight to Mecca on June 1. However, up until June 3, there had been no confirmation from the airline,' he said. The complainants told the police they were worried that their personal details would be misused. 'A total of seven reports have been linked to this agency,' he said. He added that two people, aged 36 and 39, were arrested on June 3 on suspicion of being the mastermind. One of them is believed to be the so-called 'Datuk'.

Two Datuks nabbed over fraudulent free haj packages

KUALA LUMPUR — Two individuals, both with the title 'Datuk', were arrested last Tuesday, on suspicion of involvement in fraudulent activities related to the offering of free haj packages. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department acting director Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali (picture) said the activity was uncovered after the 'Op Haji Terkandas' task force found a group of prospective pilgrims, waiting at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Monday for an individual with the title 'Datuk'. According to him, the individual was allegedly supposed to hand over visas enabling the group to depart for the Holy Land, but the promised documents were never delivered. 'Following this, one of the victims lodged a police report, claiming that he and his wife had handed over their international passports to two individuals, who had offered them free haj packages. 'The victim was promised a flight to Makkah on June 1, 2025, but as of June 3, 2025, no flight confirmation had been received from the company,' he said in a statement today. He said that the fraud was carried out by falsely claiming that the free haj packages were offered through a travel agency, registered as a haj pilgrimage organiser (PJH) for the 2025 season. 'To date, seven police reports have been lodged in connection with the fraudulent haj package offers by the company. However, no financial losses have been reported, as the packages were offered free of charge,' he said. He added that the two suspects, a 36-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, were released on police bail after their remand period ended yesterday. The case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 511 of the Penal Code. — BERNAMA
