Running together: MMC Group unites communities at inaugural friendship half-marathon in Forest City
JOHOR BARU, May 31 — The MMC Friendship Half Marathon 2025 today drew a record 6,000 participants, making it the largest half-marathon ever held in Johor.
Held in Forest City, the event featured 21.1km, 10km, and 5km categories, attracting runners from across Malaysia as well as neighbouring Singapore.
'The MMC Friendship Half Marathon is more than just a sporting event – it is a platform that brings people together, promotes healthy lifestyles, and showcases Johor as a premier sports tourism destination,' Johor Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, and Cooperatives chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah as he flagged off the event.
Participants enjoyed scenic views along the race route and took part in family-friendly activities such as inflatable playgrounds, wellness booths, and food stalls, reinforcing the event's community spirit theme.
MMC Corporation Berhad Group Managing Director Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh thanked all partners and sponsors.
'This marathon truly embodies the spirit of friendship and community... we remain committed to fostering unity, wellness and regional cooperation through events like this,' he said.
Other dignitaries present included Johor Unity, Culture and Heritage chairman Raven Kumar Krishnasamy; the state Unity, Culture and Heritage chairman, Datuk Pandak Ahmad who is also Kota Iskandar assemblyman; Iskandar Puteri deputy police chief Superintendent Mohd Azlan Abdul Kadir, Forest City regional vice-president Syarul Izam Sarifudin.

Drowsy driver loses control, express bus with 25 passengers overturns into drain on North-South Expressway
IPOH, June 4 — An express bus carrying 25 passengers overturned into a drain after the driver lost control of the vehicle at Kilometre 342.2 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) yesterday. Tapah District Police chief Supt Johari Yahya said police received a report on the crash at 1pm while the bus was en route from Penang to the Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur. 'Investigations revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to drowsiness (micro sleep). The bus sustained damage to the front, rear, left, and right sides after veering off into a drain on the left side of the road. 'Following that, the 31-year-old driver and all 25 passengers managed to exit the bus with assistance from members of the public,' he said when contacted today. He added that the driver was unharmed in the incident. 'Three passengers who sustained minor injuries are receiving treatment at the Slim River Hospital in the green zone, while the remaining 22 passengers continued their journey on a replacement bus,' he said. Johari said further investigations revealed the bus driver tested negative for drugs, and no arrests had been made so far. 'Checks on the bus also confirmed its insurance is valid until March next year. The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of LN 166/59 for causing minor injuries,' he added. — Bernama

‘Datuk Seri' arrested for allegedly assaulting woman with pistol grip in George Town
GEORGE TOWN, June 4 — A local man with the title Datuk Seri has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 28-year-old female sales assistant with a pistol grip during an incident on Jalan Kelawei. According to Buletin TV3 (TV3), the 41-year-old suspect was detained after surrendering himself at the Northeast District Police Headquarters (IPD) yesterday. North-east district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad told TV3 that the incident, which occurred around 2.20am the day before, is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the suspect and the victim. 'The victim sustained serious injuries to the nose and eye after being struck by the suspect with an object resembling a pistol grip. Police have seized a pistol, a magazine, and a firearm licence book along with some bullets. 'The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code and Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960,' he was quoted as saying. TV3 reported that the incident occurred while the victim and two friends were en route to Tanjung Tokong. The car she was driving veered into the middle lane, but the victim continued driving as usual. She then realised that her car was being followed by a black Mercedes-Benz before it blocked her path in front of a petrol station on Jalan Kelawei. The suspect then allegedly inserted a shiny gold-coloured pistol into the victim's mouth, struck her twice on the left cheek with the pistol grip, and repeatedly punched her in the face with his hands, causing a broken nose and bruising around her left eye. The victim later received treatment at Penang General Hospital (HPP) before lodging a police report. The suspect was also alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Letting US-based firm make e-cigarettes in Johor ‘a huge mistake', says expert

(LinkedIn pic) PETALING JAYA : A health expert has criticised the move to grant a US-based company licence to manufacture electronic cigarette devices with nicotine-based liquids or gels in Johor, describing it as 'a huge mistake'. Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar said the green light for Ispire Technology Inc would give the impression that the government endorsed the vape industry. He said this was at odds with its efforts to curb smoking, especially among the youth. 'It is a huge misstep by the government, and now they are in damage control mode,' he told FMT, referring to the health ministry's assurance that nicotine-based vape liquids remain tightly regulated. 'Malaysia aims to become a tobacco-free nation by 2040, but this licence is inconsistent with its goal.' Health think tank CodeBlue recently reported that Ispire Technology, which operates a facility in Senai, Johor, had its interim licence approved last month by both federal and state authorities. The company claimed to be the only one fully authorised to manufacture, import, and export nicotine products in Malaysia, and said it could start operations immediately. The health ministry subsequently said that nicotine-based vape liquids remained tightly regulated under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), despite their approval for sale in Malaysia. The ministry said these products fell under the category of 'smoking products', under Section 2 of Act 852 which covers any substances used for smoking including nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerol, and triethylene glycol. It also said that the manufacturing licence was issued by the investment, trade and industry ministry through the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, under the Industrial Coordination Act 1975. The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) agreed that granting Ispire Technology a licence would send mixed signals. Fomca CEO T Saravanan said it would give the impression that the product was safe for consumption despite the lack of evidence that vape is a healthier alternative to smoking. He added that public health should not take a back seat to the vape industry. 'If the government is really committed to protecting the younger generation from nicotine addiction, they should bar manufacturers from selling the product in the local market,' he said.
