Stockton Town FC disqualified from play-offs after fielding banned player
A football team has been denied a chance of promotion after being disqualified from its league's play-off match.Stockton Town FC had been set to play in the Northern Premier League (NPL) Premier Division play-off final, but was stopped after fielding captain Adam Nicholson in an earlier game when he should have been banned.The club appealed the decision, however the NPL upheld its ruling at a disciplinary meeting on Sunday.In a statement, the club said it was "disappointed" by the outcome and was considering further appeals.
"We are currently reviewing the decision and will assess our position before determining next steps regarding the appeal process," it said."We would like to thank our players, staff, volunteers, and especially our supporters for your understanding and unwavering backing throughout this time."We remain committed to transparency and will provide further updates when appropriate."
'Exception circumstances'
The breach occurred during the Premier Division semi-final game against Guiseley AFC, which Nicholson played in despite being sent off on the final day of the regular season.In normal circumstances, a ban from playing would have kicked in seven days after the offence. However, the delay only applies during the regular season, meaning the ban also covered the semi-final.Stockton were fined and Guiseley were given the play-off spot.The NPL said: "The club admitted the charge but cited what it believed to be exceptional circumstances leading to the ineligibility. "However, the panel found unanimously that the circumstances put forward by the club were not exceptional."The Premier Division play-off final between Worksop Town and Guiseley kicks off at 15:00 BST.

We'll be a success, or we'll fail, but we'll do it our way.' Pryce has started looking ahead to next season and is on the verge of signing three defenders, though won't name them at this stage. However, Roan Fitzpatrick, Jack McIlveen and Allan Woodhouse have departed the club. Pryce said: We've spoken to quite a few, but it's that difficult part where players are just leaving clubs, want to see what else is there for them. 'We've been concentrating on our own players, making sure the ones we want to stay are tied up, but we have certainly been active in speaking to players. 'We know our targets, we know what we're looking for, and we're just waiting on players getting back to us. 'We've managed to get two centre-backs tied up at the minute, ready for next season, and we're speaking to another one. 'We lost Roan and Woody out the midfield, who are moving on, and Jack McIlveen has moved on to St Roch's as well. 'We were disappointed to lose those three, because we wanted to take them with us, but they've made their choice, that's up to them and we wish them all the best. They were a big part of what we achieved this year.' Pryce added: 'There are a couple of players that we've still to speak to, in terms of our own group, who won't be here next season, but it's quite slow and difficult. 'The financial landscape of the Premier League is way above First Division, so that's something we're adjusting to. But we are where we are, we're certainly not going to put the club in any trouble, trying to pay wages that we can't afford. 'We see other what clubs have done, and the perilous state they find themselves in, but that won't happen at Glencairn.'

Belief is key to Derry City maintaining good away record against Bohemians, says Tiernan Lynch
The Candystripes are eight points behind the League leaders following last week's 2-1 loss at the Brandywell, but they still have a game in hand. Friday's encounter with Bohemians marks the halfway point of the season and is at a ground that has provided many magical memories for City fans over the years. Derry have won six and lost just one of their last nine visits, including two victories there last season, and Lynch is hoping his players can create even more special memories on Friday. 'That's got to be our mentality,' he said 'As I keep telling the players, we have to go into every game believing that we can win it. That's where we're at. "That doesn't mean it's going to be easy in any way, shape or form. There's no doubt that it's going to be extremely difficult going there, but it's a battle that we're well up for and hopefully we can get the win.' Meanwhile, Lynch doesn't believe there will be a repeat of the scenes at the Brandywell earlier this season when both he and Bohs manager Alan Reynolds were sent off. Lynch's home debut lasted barely 10 minutes back in February when referee Marc Lynch sent both bosses to the stand following a fracas on the sidelines. It was the first of two red cards the City boss has received in the first few months of his tenure, having also been dismissed at Galway United in April. 'It's just about the game on Friday night,' he insisted. 'What happened in the first game was that emotions got high and that happens in football. It's water under the bridge now as far as I'm concerned and it's a matter of moving on and Friday night is a different game. 'Hopefully we both stay in our technical areas and we both get through the game and there's no sending offs and it's an enjoyable game of football that, ideally, we can come out the right end of.' With City right in the mix near the top of the Premier Division and the summer transfer window approaching quickly, Lynch believes it adds to the excitement for the club's supporters. 'I know I can speak on behalf of all the staff when I say that we're loving every minute of it,' he said. 'It's no secret that we do want to strengthen and we do want to bring players into the team. 'That's also an exciting time, trying to find the right players now that are not only good enough to play for this football club, but have the character to play for this football club, which is also hugely important for us, so hopefully the future is bright.'

Dundee groomer caught in undercover police sting
A pair of undercover police officers thwarted a Dundee paedophile's attempts to groom children on social media. Joseph Nicholson, 40, sent a string of nauseating messages to two profiles he believed were an underage boy and girl. The creep – who claimed to be a duty manager at a hotel chain – repeatedly asked for pictures of the 'children' over Kik and Snapchat. A police raid on the home Nicholson shared with his husband found he was also storing child abuse videos at the highest level of depravity. Dundee Sheriff Court heard how Nicholson engaged in numerous in-depth sexual conversations between August and October 2023. The profiles – named 'Leon' and 'Ava' – would reply with various child-like responses and questions. Fiscal depute Andrew Brown read aloud the lengthy messages Nicholson exchanged, posing as a man called 'Lewis' with the username Lewboy2022. He said to the male profile: 'I wanna see everything cause I think you are cute AF' (as f***). The court heard how Nicholson repeatedly pestered the child for images posing in underwear and continued to escalate the sexual remarks. Nicholson, who sent images of himself, messaged: 'Doesn't have to be nakes right now, body in boxers just now would be nice. 'Can work up to them being off after that hehe.' When speaking to 'Ava', Nicholson immediately asked for a picture of her face. 'Just because most girls are either catfishing or scam bots,' Nicholson said. 'Not sure your as innocent as you look. 'What stuff do you normally do with guys on here. I am sure not always clean haha.' Nicholson repeatedly pressured the girl into sending a video of herself saying his name to prove she was a real person. Describing the search on Nicholson's home, Mr Brown said: 'The accused and his husband were traced in the property. 'The nature of the enquiry was explained. 'A mobile phone belonging to the accused was seized. 'Jogging bottoms were discovered which matched those in an image. 'An image containing a red carpet in one of the photos matched that of the locus.' Two Category A videos of child sex abuse material were also recovered from the mobile phone. Nicholson received the files through a group chat. He admitted two charges of attempting to communicate indecently with two children between August and October 2023. After pleading guilty on the day he was due to stand trial, Nicholson's sentence was deferred until July for a social work report to be prepared. His bail was continued and he is now a registered sex offender.
