Andy Taylor of Duran Duran fighting stage 4 cancer 'as hard as he can'

Arab Times15-02-2025

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15: Andy Taylor, founding member of Duran Duran and guitarist, is battling his stage 4 prostate cancer 'as hard as he can,' according to his bandmates.
The 63-year-old musician first revealed his diagnosis in November 2022, stating that his cancer was 'asymptomatic' after initially being diagnosed in 2018. At a press conference during the Sanremo Music Festival in Italy, Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon shared that Taylor's diagnosis was 'very late, fourth-stage metastasized cancer.' Taylor, who was unable to attend the band's induction ceremony, had Le Bon read a letter on his behalf.
Following the announcement, Taylor addressed his fans, saying he had been told that he would need 'palliative, end-of-life care.'
During his appearance at the festival, Le Bon discussed the enduring bond within the band, explaining that they have remained together for so many years without disputes over money. 'There is something between us that keeps us together,' he said. 'First of all, we love the music we make together. Nobody else makes music like we do. We've all tried to do things on our own, and it just doesn't seem as exciting as when the four of us get together and work.'
Le Bon also emphasized the importance of humor within the band. 'We make each other laugh, and I think that's very important in a long relationship. When we are under stress, we laugh all the way through it, and it keeps everything light and fun,' he said.
He continued, 'And the other thing is, we split all the proceeds equally. No one takes all the publishing. We all share the finances equally.'
In a 2023 interview with The Times of London, Taylor shared that a doctor introduced him to a breakthrough cancer treatment, a 'nuclear medicine' called Lutetium-177, designed to target cancer cells. He revealed that in August 2023, the treatment extended his life 'for five years.'
After undergoing a round of this treatment with Dr. Christopher Evans, whom Taylor described as the 'Elon Musk of cancer,' the musician was 'radioactive for several days.'
Taylor explained, 'I was classified as palliative, end-of-life care… and now I'm not. I'm asymptomatic.' At that time, he added that he couldn't sleep in the same room as others or use public transportation due to the radioactive treatment.
Reflecting on his earlier emotional struggles, Taylor recalled, 'You're gonna have to say goodbye to your family. You're not going to see your grandson's tenth birthday. Psychologically it's mind-blowing — you can't have therapy to remove the certainty of death.'
Taylor had initially declined chemotherapy treatment because he didn't want to risk nerve damage to his hands, which are critical for his guitar playing.
He also explained why he kept his diagnosis a secret for years, stating that he wanted his grown-up children 'to be able to go about life without anyone persistently asking about my health.'

Fire at leisure centre on third night of disorder in Northern Ireland

Masked individuals smashed windows at the leisure centre in Co Antrim on Wednesday and set fires outside which spread inside. Mid and East Antrim Borough Council said the facility had been designated as an emergency rest centre for those in urgent need following disturbances in nearby Ballymena but the families had been safely relocated elsewhere. Police and firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control on Wednesday night. Larne leisure centre has been attacked by masked thugs. Windows smashed and fires lit nearby. Dozens of police officers have been injured during the sustained unrest while multiple properties and vehicles have been set on fire. The PSNI deployed riot police for a third night in Ballymena as a significant crowd gathered around the Clonavon Terrace area. At least one protester was struck by a plastic baton round fired by police while officers also used a water cannon on the crowd. Demonstrators who gathered on Bridge Street near the residential area were told to disperse shortly before 9pm after a firework was thrown at officers. Officers, who warned they would fire the plastic baton rounds at violent individuals, also used dog units and drones in their response to the gathering. Riot police with shields advanced on the crowd to disperse them down Bridge Street in the town. They came under sustained attack as those participating in disorder hurled petrol bombs, masonry and fireworks at police vehicles and officers standing nearby. Earlier, a senior officer said the PSNI had requested support from colleagues in the rest of the UK following further violence in Ballymena. PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said the force would be bringing extra officers, vehicles and equipment to areas where unrest has flared. He said there were disgraceful scenes in Belfast, Lisburn, Coleraine, Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey on Tuesday, as businesses, homes and cars were attacked and damaged. By Wednesday, six individuals had been arrested for public order offences, and one charged. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he 'utterly condemns' violence which left 32 police officers injured after the second night of disturbances. PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has warned that the rioting 'risks undermining' the criminal justice process into an allegation of a sex attack on a teenage girl in Ballymena at the weekend. Stormont ministers have also made an urgent appeal for calm and said the justice process had to be allowed to take its course. Mr Henderson said the force had requested about 80 officers through mutual aid. Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions in the Commons, Sir Keir condemned the 'mindless attacks' against police. In a joint statement, ministers from across the Stormont powersharing Executive, which includes Sinn Fein, DUP, Alliance Party and UUP, said those involved in disorder have nothing to offer society but 'division and disorder'. First Minister Michelle O'Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly later appeared together to voice their condemnation. Sinn Fein vice-president Ms O'Neill told reporters in Belfast: 'It's pure racism, there is no other way to dress it up.' Ms Little-Pengelly described the scenes in Ballymena as 'unacceptable thuggery'. With the protests focused in predominantly loyalist areas in Ballymena, Ms O'Neill said she did not believe it would be helpful for her to visit in the current context. DUP MLA Ms Little-Pengelly met residents in the town on Wednesday and said the local community are in fear and wanted the violence to stop. 'The key message here today is around that violence, and that the violence needs to stop, that's what the community wants to put across, and that's why I'm here to send that very clear and united message from right throughout the community and local residents for that to stop,' she said. The violence began around Clonavon Terrace on Monday night following an earlier peaceful protest which was organised in support of the family of a girl who was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in the area. Two teenage boys, who spoke to a court through a Romanian interpreter, have been charged.

Winners of Race Across The World 2025 crowned

Housewife Caroline, 60, and 21-year-old Tom became the first mother-and-son team to win after reaching the final checkpoint in Kanniyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India, to claim their £20,000 prize. Four teams in the 14,100km (8,761-mile) race successfully crossed Asia, the world's largest continent, to make it to the finish line. During Wednesday's episode, Caroline and Tom had to find Vattakottai Fort where the final sign-in book was waiting. After turning the page to discover they were the first team to make it to the landmark they hugged, overcome with emotion. Writing their names in the book, Tom said: 'That's a really good feeling, I'm lost for words, I can't believe it. 'Fifty-one days racing through countries I never thought I'd go to. 'I never thought we'd come this far, I never thought we'd achieve so much and I've never been prouder of my mum – she got me through it.' Sisters Elizabeth and Letitia came second, just 19 minutes behind the winners, with teenage couple Fin and Sioned third. Brothers Brian and Melvyn arrived in fourth place, three hours and five minutes behind Caroline and Tom. The winning pair began the last leg in the lead, six hours and 54 minutes ahead of Elizabeth and Letitia. They started from the seventh checkpoint, Panaji in Goa with just over 1,000km (600 miles) to traverse across the southern Indian states to reach the finish line. Reflecting on their win, Tom said the race was 'the best experience of my life'. Caroline said: 'We've learnt so much, we've enjoyed it and to actually win it as well as to have the experience is the best thing that could have happened to us.' The contestants traversed areas of China, Nepal and India, covering more than 14,000km over 51 days. The teams will reunite for a special episode airing at 9pm on Wednesday June 18 on BBC One where they will reflect on the race and the impact it has had on their lives. All eight episodes of Race Across The World are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
