Dentist from Nigeria works to provide services to under-served Charlotte community
A construction site on Beatties Ford Road is soon to turn into Bubbles Pediatric Dentistry, a practice hoping to provide dental care in an underserved community.
The 4,200-square-foot space is under construction near Lassalle Street. The dentistry's owner Dr. Somtochukwu Agunwah told Channel 9′s Erika Jackson that the building will have 16 patient chairs and 10 treatment rooms. Agunwah said her patients call her Dr. Somi.
'I'm a child at heart,' she said. 'So I love to interact with the kids a lot.'
But the road to becoming Dr. Somi and building Bubbles Pediatric Dentistry wasn't easy, Agunwah said.
'I came here from Nigeria after high school. I came here without my parents. I came here with my two siblings. While I was in school, I was working to support my livelihood. I braided hair, baked food, I waited on tables — I did all that just to take care of myself,' Agunwah said.

Now, her lifelong dream of providing dental care access to underserved communities is becoming a reality, she said.
'It's very walkable from so many businesses and so many homes. And I thought this would be a perfect location to provide access care to a lot of people,' Agunwah said.
Bubbles Pediatric Dentistry is planned to open doors in May, Agunwah said. But she hoped the impact the dentistry has lasts for generations, she told Jackson.
'If there's one thing I want the younger population to learn from me it is resilience,' Agunwah said. 'Keeping your eyes on the prize and keep pushing.'

ALSO READ: Union County family's home catches fire months after kids hit by truck Channel 9's Erika Jackson spoke with the family as they get support from neighbors along Haden Drive off New Town Road near Waxhaw. The Union County Fire Marshal ruled it an accident. Investigators believe an air compressor was plugged into one car, pumping air into a tire on a pickup truck, which started the fire. Everything the Robinsons own is gone. 'Material things can be replaced but someone's life can't,' said Veronica Robinson. Robinson sees beyond the damage. 'All I can think about is my mom,' she said. 'All I can think about is her. What if I lost her?' Robinson said she was in her bathroom Monday morning when she heard a visiting family member banging on the door. 'I saw that the flames were starting to jump onto the house,' Robinson said. 'And when I [had] seen that, I immediately ran back in the house, ran to that room right there, and got my mom out.' Robinson said her daughter-in-law helped her oxygen-dependent father escape. He's recovering in a hospital as her family works to figure out what's next. 'I'd be completely lost if it wasn't for the community coming together and just helping any way they can anyway,' Robinson said. She credits her neighbor, Kristen Marcum, for calling 911 and coordinating donations through a GoFundMe account. Robinson said she was reminded of what she does have. 'This has really taught me what paying it forward means and just taught me to slow down and smell the roses,' she said. The Red Cross is helping them with temporary housing. She's waiting for her renters and car insurance to come through. GoFundMe for the Robinsons VIDEO: Dilworth fire that led to explosion set intentionally

Central Florida is expected to see Saharan dust pass through
Today, millions of Americans in Eastern states will see smoke and haze. It's Saharan dust and tomorrow it'll be here in central Florida. Dust from Africa's Sahara Desert is heading West across the Atlantic Ocean. Channel 9 certified meteorologist Daniel McFarland says it's currently over the Caribbean and will be here by tomorrow. 'Sometimes Africa has different weather that could be kicking up that dust.' It'll be here at least through Sunday, with a potential impact on next week. McFarland notes, 'You'll notice a slight haze, but it'll be pretty faint.' However, the dust that settles on us could cause issues for those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma. According to Dr. Gayathri Kapoor with Orlando Health, it can cause symptoms like an itchy or runny nose and coughing. She says those with respiratory issues should plan ahead. 'If you can help it, stay indoors, but if you do need to go out... Carry your medications with you... Change your clothes or at least take a shower, just to make sure the dust, you can get rid of it easily.' Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps.
