Bulgarian students compete for spots in final round of Mandarin contests in China
SOFIA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Eleven Bulgarian teenagers on Saturday took part in the national qualification contest of the 18th "Chinese Bridge" contest, a Chinese language proficiency competition for foreign secondary school students.
The young contestants demonstrated their language skills and talents related to Chinese culture, earning rounds of applause from the audience at the Multifunctional Hall of the Confucius Institute in Sofia.
Veronika Georgieva, a student from Vasil Levski Secondary School in the city of Ruse, emerged as the winner of this year and earned the chance to represent Bulgaria at the final stage of the competition in China.
This is the third consecutive year that 16-year-old Georgieva has participated in the contest. In 2024, she took second place, she told Xinhua. "For me, this award is an encouragement for the efforts I have made in previous years and my hard studying," she said, adding that she was eager to experience life in China first hand.
The event is part of a set of "Chinese Bridge" contests held annually in Bulgaria. The university-level contest is scheduled for Sunday, while primary school students will compete on May 17.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Wang Min, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria, emphasized that the event is not just a language competition, but also a bridge that connects hearts and cultures. More and more young Bulgarians are getting closer to the language and Chinese culture through this competition, she said, adding that the contest is building bonds of friendship between the peoples of China and Bulgaria.
Co-organized by the Confucius Institute in Sofia and the Confucius Institute at the University of Veliko Turnovo, the event is hosted by China's Center for Language Education and Cooperation and the Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria.

China rolls out special Asean visa for 10 South-East Asian countries and also adds Timor Leste in list
SOUTH-EAST ASIA (Bernama): China has rolled out an Asean Visa for the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and Asean observer Timor-Leste, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The ministry's spokesperson, Lin Jian, said this new programme offers five-year multiple-entry visas to eligible applicants visiting China for business purposes and their spouses as well as children, granting a maximum stay of 180 days. "For anyone with more specific questions on visas to China, they are welcome to contact our diplomatic and consular missions in their countries,' he said in a statement today. He said the initiative was to further facilitate cross-border travels in the region, on top of the visa-free arrangement between China and countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and China's 'Lancang-Mekong visas' programme for Mekong countries. In recent years, he noted that China and Asean have advanced the building of a community with a shared future. "Visits between the people of China and Southeast Asian countries have been frequent. "There is a mutual hope to further ease travel between the two sides,' he pointed out. He also said that the growing 'visa-free list' shows China's firm resolve in expanding high-level opening up. "The various measures China has taken to ease cross-border travel are all part of China's concrete action to create an open global economy,' he explained. Adding to the proof, Lin said in the first quarter of this year, China received over nine million visits by foreigners, up by over 40 per cent year-on-year. "And in the first four months, more than 18,000 foreign-invested companies were established in China, up by 12.1 per cent year-on-year,' he said. Chinese tourist arrivals to Cambodia's iconic Angkor up 30 per cent in January-May period
China was the fourth largest source of international tourist arrivals to Angkor after the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. - PPP PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has reported a remarkable rise in the number of Chinese tourists to its famed Angkor Archaeological Park in the first five months of 2025, said an official report on Tuesday (June 3). A total of 43,193 Chinese visitors visited Angkor during the January-May period, up 30 per cent from 33,292 over the same period last year, said the state-owned Angkor Enterprise's report. China was the fourth largest source of international tourist arrivals to Angkor after the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, it added. According to the report, a total of 527,577 foreigners from 171 countries and regions toured the ancient park in the first five months of this year, generating a gross revenue of US$24.5 million from ticket sales. Thong Mengdavid, a lecturer at the Institute for International Studies and Public Policy of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, said that, with 2025 being designated as the Cambodia-China Tourism Year, a significant surge in Chinese tourist arrivals to the Angkor Archaeological Park is predicted. "This increase will likely be driven by enhanced bilateral cooperation, promotional campaigns, and greater accessibility through direct flights and group tour packages," he told Xinhua.
