Sensor installation at LRT stations pending study completion, key to preventing platform accidents, says Prasarana CEO
KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) said the study on installing sensors at light rail transit (LRT) stations is expected to be completed within the next two to three months.
Prasarana's president and group chief executive officer, Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, said the sensors are being developed to alert authorities if anyone tries to enter the restricted safety zone.
He added that these sensors are expected to be implemented this year, provided the study is completed within the planned timeframe.
'We are currently conducting a study, and only once it is completed will we decide when to begin the sensor installation process.
'This matter requires a more in-depth study, so we will complete the study first before determining the timeline and refining the cost involved,' he said.
He told reporters this at a Prasarana event to strengthen efforts to develop the future workforce in line with the national TVET policy agenda, held at Menara Prasarana, Petaling Jaya today.
Mohd Azharuddin was responding to a question on the progress of sensor installation at LRT stations following the tragic incident involving a man with disabilities who died after falling onto the tracks and being struck by a train at the Titiwangsa LRT Station on February 22.
On March 31, he said that Prasarana would introduce additional safety measures at LRT stations by installing sensors beyond the designated safe zone and a long-term solution of installing platform screen doors similar to those at MRT stations. — Bernama

Sibu school to modernise facilities, embrace STEM, TVET

According to the school's management board chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, these efforts align with education reforms focused on strengthening teacher professionalism, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and technical and vocational education and training (TVET), using technology in teaching, and reducing dropout rates. 'However, while the board is committed to supporting these changes, it still faces limitations and relies on allocations from the Education Department to support the school,' he said during the school's 'Teacher's Day' celebration at a hotel here on Friday. Lau added that the official theme for the national 2025 Teacher's Day celebration, 'Guru Pemacu Reformasi Pendidikan' (Teachers Driving Educational Reform), reflected the evolving role of teachers in leading innovation and student-centred learning in today's fast-changing education landscape. 'Teachers are key drivers of this change, guiding students to meet the demands of the digital era. 'With the support of the community, and the dedication of our staff and students, I believe our school will continue to grow, keep pace with the times, and contribute meaningfully to education reform. 'These reforms also bring challenges, from adopting new tools to addressing students' needs – all of which require strong support and an enabling environment.' Lau also pointed out that although SK Bandaran Sibu No 2 might not be comparable with other larger schools here in terms of facilities, it would be up to the teachers and headmaster to 'turn weaknesses into strength'. Lau also expressed hope that the school would win more awards in curriculum and co-curricular activities in time to come, and urged teachers to find opportunities for students who may not excel academically but possess other talents. New TVET ecosystem needed to meet 60,000 engineer target
LANGKAWI: A new ecosystem in education, particularly in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), must be accelerated to achieve the government's target of producing 60,000 highly skilled engineers. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said student intake into engineering programmes must also be increased and given more focus. "The country currently needs 60,000 engineers, but we're only able to produce around 6,000 a year. So, we must expedite the development of a new learning ecosystem to meet this target. "We will also focus on school leavers from fully residential schools, in addition to Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) and private Maahad Tahfiz, to encourage their participation in the engineering field," he said. He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of five Memoranda of Agreement (MoA) between Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) and five industry players in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima'25) here today. Zahid said more Maahad Tahfiz graduates will be recruited to pursue engineering programmes at UniKL and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), especially in the aerospace field. He said there are currently 1,962 students enrolled in aerospace courses at UniKL, including 129 huffaz graduates from Maahad Tahfiz Ulul Albab. "I am grateful that these huffaz students are well-received not only by UniKL MIAT but also by industry players, as they are able to grasp the syllabus introduced to them and adapt quickly in practical settings," he said. On today's MoAs involving UniKL MIAT and five industry players, Zahid said the collaborations include Galaxy Aerospace, Aerostar Technologies, Global Turbine Asia, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and Pen Aviation.
