Koushki stars to take Esteghlal into Asian Champions League knockout rounds
Feb 18 (Reuters) - Iran's Esteghlal qualified for the last 16 of the Asian Champions League Elite when a 2-0 win over Al-Rayyan of Qatar on Tuesday ensured the Tehran-based side advanced at the expense of compatriots and bitter rivals Persepolis.
Substitute Alireza Koushki set up Mohammad Azadi's 46th minute opener and scored Esteghlal's second 23 minutes later to take his side up to sixth in the 12-team west Asian standings, forcing Persepolis out of the eight qualification places.
Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal ensured they finished top of the standings with a 2-0 win over Al-Wasl from the United Arab Emirates and Jorge Jesus' side will take on eighth-placed Pakhtakor in the next round over two legs in March.
The completion of the league phase means the lineup for the knockout rounds for the west Asian half of the draw is set, with Saudi Pro League clubs in the first three spots in the table.
Second-placed Al-Ahli will take on Al-Rayyan, while Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr face Esteghlal. Qatar's Al Sadd will meet Al-Wasl, with games to be played on March 3 or 4 and the return matches held one week later.
The quarter-finals, semis and final will be played in a centralised format featuring clubs from west and east Asia in Saudi Arabia in late April and early May.
Esteghlal went into their meeting with already-qualified hosts Al-Rayyan knowing a draw would be enough to climb into the top eight and Sohrab Bakhtiarzadeh's side went in front soon after halftime.
Koushki drove towards the byline as the Al-Rayyan defence hesitated and Azadi forced his team mate's cross over the line with his chest.
The Iranians doubled the lead in the 69th minute when they launched a counter-attack from deep, Koushki taking advantage of inept attempts to dispossess him by Andre Amaro and Julien De Sart to score past Paulo Victor.
Al-Hilal secured top spot with victory over Al-Wasl, their seventh win in eight matches as Jesus' side finished with an unbeaten record in the group phase.
Marcos Leonardo scored from close range in the 13th minute and captain Salem Al-Dawsari added the second four minutes into the second half after a return pass from Abdullah Al-Hamddan.

Farrell 'secures England return' as Saracens plot retirement plan for fly-half
Owen Farrell is set to return to the Premiership after Saracens secured a deal that will see him return from Racing 92 with his contract factoring in his role once he's retired Owen Farrell will return to Saracens after just one year away with the Premiership club negotiating his exit from French club Racing 92. The England star opted to head overseas last summer, but is now poised to head back. Farrell joined Stuart Lancaster, the man who gave him his England debut in 2011, at the Paris-based outfit. However Lancaster has since been sacked and the fly-half has struggled to settle in the French capital, struggling with injury and expressing a desire to return to his homeland. Racing 92 originally demanded a €500,000 fee to let Farrell go but Saracens have negotiated that down to €200,000 with the 33-year-old signing a five-year deal in north London that makes plans for his retirement, reports the Telegraph. The move will see him take up a player-coach position. Farrell is set to play for at least the next two seasons before he transitions into a full-time coaching role when he retires as a player. Racing received approaches from several Premiership clubs, including Gloucester and Leicester Tigers, but Farrell was only looking to return to Saracens, where he had played for 16 seasons as a professional. Farrell's return to England means he is again eligible to play for his country. The RFU's overseas policy meant he had ruled himself out of playing under Steve Borthwick, but he will again put himself in contention to add to his 112 caps. Saracens have just missed out on the top four having previously been regulars in the play-offs and director of rugby Mark McCall, who didn't shy away from confessing the club's interest in Farrell, insists having him back would be a huge plus on and off the pitch. 'He doesn't have to play 10, he can play other positions as well,' McCall said recently. 'So for our young talents who are developing, it could be a great thing to have him there. 'It's not just about having talent, it's about being able to think properly on the field. I know Owen's obviously one of the best at that. He and [fellow fly-half] Louie Johnson in particular have a very strong relationship already. They talk every month at least. Owen's so willing to share his knowledge and his experience with younger players.' Farrell was seen as an outside bet to go on this summer's British and Irish Lions tour, where dad Andy is the head coach. He can still be called up as injury cover, which could see him take part in a fourth tour having been part of the squads in 2013, 2017 and 2021.

The Welsh legend's two-year stay with his boyhood hasn't worked out as well as all had hoped it would, with injuries curtailing his time in a Bluebirds shirt. "Aaron Ramsey will leave the Bluebirds this summer," the club said in a statement yesterday. "The Welsh captain rejoined his childhood club during the summer of 2023, before taking up the role of caretaker manager for the final three games of the 2024/25 campaign. Aaron departs Cardiff City Stadium with our best wishes." Ramsey had an option to trigger a year extension on his deal with the Bluebirds, but although there were weeks of negotiation, he decided not to exercise the option. But things move fast in football and last weekend rumours and reports emerged linking him with a move to Mexican side Pumas. The Press Association stated he had agreed a move to the Guadalajara-based side, with Ramsey's name dominating column inches and airwaves on the other side of the Atlantic. His move has taken one step closer in the last 24 hours, with outlet Telediario reporting that FIFA have lifted a transfer ban on the Pumas on Thursday, meaning the club can now register new players. "This Thursday, the highest governing body of world soccer took the next step to allow Club Universidad Nacional to sign players during the current transfer window," the report states. "This comes after UNAM officials fixed the administrative error that originally put them in this predicament a couple of weeks ago. "With this issue resolved, university leadership can now fully focus on planning the next tournament, where the goal will be to return to the Liguilla and compete for the championship. Article continues below "Now off the registration ban list, the latest signing that the Pumas are aiming to make official as soon as possible is Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey. "While his contract with Cardiff City runs until June 30 of this year, it is estimated that he could terminate his contract sooner than expected."
