Cowboys star still on rookie contract changes agents; already eyeing monster deal in 2027?
In late April, the Cowboys picked up the fifth-year option for offensive lineman Tyler Smith, ensuring that the former first-round draft pick- entering his fourth season as a pro- will see out his rookie contract with a big blue star on his helmet.
But the 24-year-old already has one eye on his financial future beyond 2026.
Smith has new representation, it was announced Monday. The two-time Pro Bowler will now be working with Athletes First. Per Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, the agency's Joe Panos and Todd France will take Smith on as a client.
Athletes First already represents several of the highest-profile Cowboys, including quarterback Dak Prescott, edge rusher Micah Parsons, kicker Brandon Aubrey, and newly-acquired wide receiver George Pickens.
Thanks to France, Prescott earned a record-setting $240 million contract just hours before the 2024 season kicked off. Parsons (working with the agency's David Mulugheta) is widely expected to sign a new deal this offseason that will make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history.
Smith's business move has already suggested to some that the Fort Worth native could be seeking top-of-market money for his position following the 2026 NFL season. The fifth-year option recently exercised by the club locks in a 2026 base salary for Smith of $21.27 million, though the two sides can negotiate a longer-term deal before then.
Panos got a shout-out recently during the club's retirement ceremony for Tyron Smith. The five-time All-Pro singled out Panos, calling him someone who changed his life. He fought back rare emotion in saying, "You've never just been my agent; you've been family."
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones echoed that sentiment, saying of Panos, "I've never seen anybody do more and get involved more to help him than you did as his friend and agent."
Tyler Smith was obviously paying attention.

Lions Urged to Consider Major Late Offseason Move
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last season, the Detroit Lions were the best team in the NFL. Heading into the playoffs, many thought that a Super Bowl run would be in store. Unfortunately, in their first matchup in the divisional round, the Lions were defeated by Jayden Daniels and the red-hot Washington Commanders. That ended what had otherwise been an amazing season. Heading into the 2025 campaign, Detroit is looking to finish what it started last year. In order to do that, the Lions will need to have as much talent as possible on both sides of the football. Adding more depth would be wise as well after all of the injuries the team dealt with in 2024. Head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions celebrates after his team's touchdown against the Chicago Bears during the third quarter at Soldier Field on December 22, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois. USA Today analyst Tyler Dragon has connected Detroit to Za'Darius Smith. Of course, Smith finished the 2024 season with the team and played well after being acquired from the Cleveland Browns before the trade deadline. "Smith is at his best when he plays opposite a standout pass rusher at this stage of his career," Dragon wrote. "A sign that points right back to where he played last year in Detroit. Lions star edge Aidan Hutchinson was cleared to return for football activities in late May." Following his trade to the Lions, Smith played in eight games. He racked up 12 total tackles to go along with four sacks and a defended pass. In the previous nine games with the Browns, he totaled 23 tackles and five sacks. Depending on the price tag, Detroit should seriously consider bringing him back. Having too much depth is never a thing for a Super Bowl contender. Smith is about as good as pass rushing depth can get. While the Lions may not have interest in reuniting with Smith, he fits well with the Dan Campbell mindset. His career is also winding down, which would make returning to Detroit and competing for a championship a likely route he'd be interest in taking. Report: Steelers expect to have a deal with T.J. Watt by the start of the season
In 2021, T.J. Watt held in at training camp while waiting for a contract extension. He was present to avoid daily fines, but he did not participate in the on-field work to avoid injury. Watt ended up signing a four-year, $112 million extension three days before the start of the season. It could be headed that way again. A day after a report that the Steelers have made a 'pretty substantial' offer to Watt but 'probably not' what Watt is looking for in his new deal comes word that nothing is imminent. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the sides are talking with the 'expectation they will come to some agreement . . . before the start of the regular season.' The sides might have 'some resistance and not-so-minor stumbling blocks along the way' to a deal, Dulac adds. The Steelers have a club policy that ends all negotiations once the season begins, so they have three months to iron out an agreement. Watt's new deal is expected to top the four-year, $160 million extension the Browns gave to edge rusher Myles Garrett. Watt, 30, led the league in sacks three of the previous five seasons, including matching the NFL's all-time single-season record (22.5) in 2021. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a four-time All-Pro.
