The Sun24-04-2025

HOME Bargains shoppers can add a fun touch to their flowerbeds with a novelty buy.
The budget-friendly garden decor is available at half the price of a similar item.
Described as "unique garden decor", the fun feature is available from Home Bargains.
The Firefly Novelty Frog Solar Light with Animated LED Eyes is listed for just £9.99.
It is designed to "brighten up your garden" with no wires or batteries needed.
Instead, the frog absorbs the sunlight during the day to emit light after dark.
"This charming little critter features animated LED eyes that add a touch of whimsy while providing eco-friendly illumination," the description read.
The "digitally moving" LED eyes are designed to look as though the cute creature is scanning your garden.
A similar item is available from The Glow Company at almost double the price.
The Solar Powered Winking & Blinking Frog retails for £19.75.
Manufacturers pointed out an additional benefit of the "adorable solar powered frog".
"A lot of fox deterrent lights work by using intermittent flashing lights designed to mimic the eyes of a predator, which can scare foxes away by making them feel watched," they explained.
I tried 'magic' Lidl garden hose - you need to get it, it's perfect for summer
"As cute as it is in the day, it might give anyone a scare to see a pair of blinking eyes after dark."
And if you're not a frog fan, Home Bargains offers a Firefly Novelty Snail Solar Light with Animated LED Eyes.
According to the bargain retailer, the cartoon creatures are guaranteed to "bring safety, joy, and entertainment".
For proper charging, keep the solar panel on the back of the animal clear.
Home Bargains also has a £6 decor feature that instantly levels up your patio.
8 must-have plants to brighten up your garden
Nick Hamilton owner of Barnsdale Gardens has shared his favourite plants and flowers you should consider adding to your garden, borders and pots.
Tricyrtis
A spectacular plant that gives a real exotic feel to any garden with its orchid-like, spotted flowers giving the impression that this plant should be tender but it is 'as tough as old boots!'.
Penstemon
I love this plants genus of because most will flower all summer and autumn. They'll grow in sun or semi-shade in a well drained soil and produce a non-stop display of tubular flowers in an array of colours and colour combination to suit all tastes.
Luzula sylvatica 'Marginata'
With the evergreen leaves edged with yellow it's great asset is that it
will grow in sun or shade in any type of soil and is great as groundcover in the hardest spot to fill - dry shade.
Eryngium x zabelii 'Big Blue'
A stunning, nectar-rich plant that will feed the beneficial insects in your
garden. Leave the flowerheads once they have turned brown because they look stunning with winter frost and snow, extending the plant's interest period.
Sarcococca hookeriana 'Winter Gem'
If you need winter scent then look no further than this compact, evergreen shrub. The scent is stunning and the evergreen leaves create an excellent backdrop for the summer flowers.
Cornus sanguinea 'Anny's Winter Orange'
A dwarf version of 'Midwinter Fire' the very colourful stems create a stunning winter display, particularly on sunny days.
Rosa 'Noisette Carnee'
A very well-behaved climbing rose that is perfect for training over an arch, pergola or gazebo. The small, 'noisette' flowers are blush-pink and produce the most amazing clove scent constantly from June to November.
Sanguisorba hakusanensis 'Lilac Squirrel'
I've never seen a squirrel with a drooping, shaggy lilac tail, but this variety will give your garden an unusual and different look throughout summer. It does need a moisture retentive soil but will grow in sun or semi-shade.
And you can add even more light to your garden with a popular £7 buy from Home Bargains.
Or pick up starting at just £3.99.
The budget-friendly retailer also has over 20 plants currently scanning for just £2.99.
Or you can pick up a £6 plant from Home Bargains that is guaranteed to add colour to your garden.
Home Bargains shoppers also spotted a variety of garden buys that can spruce up your lawn this spring.
