Johnny Sexton insists he is ‘here to help' Finn Russell despite past Lions criticism
Johnny Sexton has insisted he is 'here to help' Finn Russell in his capacity as British & Irish Lions assistant coach, after the pair shook hands and cleared the air last month following the former Ireland captain's previous criticism of the Scotland fly-half. Sexton toured with the Lions in 2013 and 2017 but was a surprise omission from Warren Gatland's squad in 2021. In his autobiography, the former Ireland captain revealed how the snub 'kills me to this day' and described Russell as a 'media darling' before suggesting in a subsequent interview that he was 'flashy'. Sexton, who retired after the 2023 World Cup, was added in April to Andy Farrell's coaching staff for the tour of Australia this summer, making for a potentially awkward reunion with Russell, who is the favourite to start at fly-half in the three-Test series against the Wallabies. The pair had a brief catch-up at the first squad get-together last month, however, with Russell explaining recently that the air had been cleared. 'We ended up having a laugh about the whole thing,' Russell said. 'I certainly don't bear a grudge against him and we move on.' Sexton is adamant that he will do all he can to assist Russell – who joined the Lions squad in Dublin on Monday after celebrating Bath's Premiership final victory on Sunday – in the coming weeks. 'It's probably been blown out of proportion, really,' he said. 'I was talking about myself in 2021 and how I felt back then. And it was more really about what I thought Gatland was thinking as opposed to what I was thinking. But look, you have to deal with these types of challenges. It won't be the last time. We had a handshake and a brief chat. He was racing off because those guys who were playing in finals didn't stay too long. 'I'm looking forward to catching up with him [Russell] later. What the Lions demands of you is that if there is a rivalry – which there's not, but if there was – you leave it at the door. I'm here to help him now. I'm here to give him experiences. I'm here to answer questions. I'm not here to force myself on him or tell him what to do. It's not that relationship. I'm here to help.' Along with Russell, Bath's Will Stuart and Leicester's Ollie Chessum have also joined the squad, as well as 12 Leinster players following their URC final victory, meaning only Toulouse's Blair Kinghorn is absent from the 38-man touring party. Tadhg Furlong, who has not played since early May, joined training on Monday, while Hugo Keenan and Jamison Gibson-Park sat out the morning session along with James Ryan, who went off with a back injury on Saturday. Sign up to The Breakdown The latest rugby union news and analysis, plus all the week's action reviewed after newsletter promotion After providing cover last week at the training camp in Portugal, Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour are due back in England's training camp on Tuesday and will not be considered for the Lions' warm-up match against Argentina on Friday. Henry Arundell has been omitted from the England squad preparing for the match on Saturday against a France XV, however, having been called into training last week. Six Bath players and three from Leicester have been selected after the final last Saturday, including the man of the match, Guy Pepper. Owen Farrell meanwhile has completed his return to Saracens after just a season with Racing 92. The 33-year-old has joined on an initial two-year deal before making the expected move to the coaching staff at his boyhood club after Saracens agreed a compensation package of around €200,000 (£170,000).

Darwin Nunez ready to accept transfer offer as Liverpool set asking price
Darwin Nunez is ready to accept a transfer offer to leave Liverpool but the Premier League champions are asking for at least £50m for the striker. Nunez has largely disappointed at Anfield following a big-money move from Benfica in 2022 worth up to £85m. The 25-year-old scored 34 goals during his last season at Benfica but has failed to hit those heights during his three-year spell at Liverpool. Nunez has chipped in with some vital goals – scoring 40 in total over the past three seasons – but Liverpool bosses expected more from one of the most expensive signings in the club's history. Liverpool fielded offers for Nunez during the January transfer window but did not want to risk unsettling a squad that was on course to win the Premier League. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. But Arne Slot is open to selling Nunez this summer, especially if the sale boosts his own transfer kitty and allows him to bring more new signings to the club. Liverpool have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are set to welcome his former teammate Florian Wirtz to Anfield in a deal worth around £115m. Nunez is one of the players expected to make way and has emerged as a target for several clubs in Saudi Arabia and Europe. According to Gianluca di Marzio, Napoli have identified Nunez as a top target and the Uruguay international is 'open' to joining the Serie A champions. Napoli have already sealed an impressive deal for Manchester City hero Kevin De Bruyne and now want to add Nunez to Antonio Conte's squad in Naples. Appearances: 95Goals: 25Assists: 13Wins: 57Goals per game: 0.57 Big chances missed: 55 Corriere dello Sport also say Napoli are working on a deal for Nunez and believe Liverpool have quoted a price of at least £50m to interested suitors. Napoli's biggest competition for Nunez could in fact come from their direct rivals AC Milan, who are looking to sign a new striker for new manager Massimiliano Allegri. The Saudi Pro League could offer Nunez a lucrative contract but he is believed to have reservations about leaving elite club football in Europe. Despite his underwhelming spell on Merseyside, Nunez has all the attributes to be a top-class striker. Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain have even been urged to approach Liverpool to discuss a shock move for Nunez. 'There are two players I'd like to see at PSG and one is Kai Havertz from Arsenal,' France World Cup winner Marcel Desailly told Oddspedia. More Trending 'Havertz is the best option because he can play as a midfielder but also as a point of reference up front as a striker. 'For me Havertz would be the best signing for PSG and the other is Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. 'Nunez is a point of reference and has great movement, he has been unlucky in front of goal but I think he'd do well in a back-up role for PSG. 'Those are the two players I'd like to see join PSG this summer.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. KSI HUMBLED by UFC legend as YouTuber is forced to tap in just 17 SECONDS during grappling match
KSI was forced to tap out after just 17 seconds during a recent challenge with UFC fighter Demetrius Johnson. The YouTuber, who has also fought in a number of boxing bouts, set himself a target of lasting one minute in a grappling match with the former UFC flyweight champion. KSI started the contest on top of Johnson, seemingly in an advantageous position. However, he was beaten comfortably by the MMA man, an arm-lock forcing KSI to tap out just with just 17 seconds gone on the timer. 'He put up a wager, he put up a challenge,' explained Johnson. 'KSI does not grapple, he's more of a boxer. — ً. (@C0MB4TT) June 16, 2025 KSI last took to the ring for a boxing bout when he lost to pro fighter Tommy Fury back in 2023 'So I am always down for a challenge, especially someone who doesn't grapple as much. 'I am 145 pounds, he's 210. You guys might say he ain't 260, I understand that but we're gonna get a little bit of a grapple on and see if he can survive for one minute against me on the ground.' He did not. The pair exchanged high fives before starting the clock, Johnson quickly getting off the ground and flipping KSI onto his back. Johnson first went for the leg but decided on the YouTuber's arm, warning him the time to tap out would come soon. KSI quickly realised he was in trouble and wisely submitted. 'Oh my god,' he said after tapping out. 'Holy sh*t.' Johnson last fought in the UFC back in 2018. He lost his flyweight title to Henry Cejudo after a record 11 championship defences. Johnson was subsequently traded to the ONE Championship where he fought until his retirement in 2024. After rising to YouTube fame, KSI turned his hand to boxing, infamously fighting fellow streamer Logan Paul on two occasions. One was a draw, the other a KSI victory. In 2023, KSI lost to boxer and former Love Island star Tommy Fury. That was his last fight to date after a number of attempts to get back in the ring were cancelled.
