UNITED STATES – How are Beyonce, SZA and Dolly Parton doing? That is the question on Mr Louis Easton's mind.
But he is not an assistant or a stylist to the stars. Instead, his charges are a monstera, a silver satin pothos and a prayer plant named after the American singers. Mr Easton, better known as the Plant Mon in Los Angeles, is part of a new crop of plant minders who help clients curate and care for their botanical babies.
'Plants are the new pets,' said Mr Brandon Barnett, a founder of Nerdy Plant in Atlanta , a full-service firm that offers design, care and troubleshooting for plant collections weekly, biweekly or monthly.
He propagated his first plant, a heartleaf philodendron – still his favourite – at 10 years old and has been helping care for other people's plants since college.
He and Mr Cameron Dotson, a co-owner, saw a significant uptick in demand for their plant ministrations during the coronavirus pandemic.
'People were buying a lot of different plants, but they were having a hard time with them,' Mr Barnett said. What started primarily as a retail business has morphed into a home-and-office service that includes watering, mitigating pests and optimising lighting for US$50 (S$65) an hour, excluding materials. (In the Plant Mon's case, basic services begin at US$50 a visit, but Mr Easton said he would adjust rates for those on a budget.)
Mr Barnett will go the extra mile to nurture his charges, he said, from polishing leaves by hand to leaving tap water out overnight to evaporate chemicals like chlorine before watering finicky plants such as calathea.
Nerdy Plant's clients, many of whom are in the movie business and gone for months at a time, often ask for photos so they can track their plants' wellness from afar.
'People invest time and money into these living things, so it makes sense that they care about them,' Mr Barnett said.

The expression of plant care can extend to the spoken word. Just ask Mr Hilton Carter, 45, a plant and interior stylist and content creator in Baltimore.
'I do talk to every single plant,' he said. 'I'm just checking in, like, 'Hey, how are you doing? Are you looking good? How'd you get these yellowing leaves? Is that my fault?''
Mr Carter is not alone in chatting to flora. In an interview that aired in 2011, Britain's King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, waxed poetic about his love of the natural world. 'I happily talk to the plants, the trees, listen to them,' he said. 'I think it's absolutely crucial.'
Once Mr Carter installs a plant collection, the client may choose to add ongoing care services for about US$50 an hour, but he notes that the real bond between parent and plant is forged during hands-on care.
'That process – the watering, the repotting, the wiping down the leaves, the misting – these things create a connection,' he said. 'Once you start to have that sort of relationship with something, that bond, that love is formed.'
There is a historical precedent to people inviting plant caretakers into their quarters, said London-based author Catherine Horwood of Potted History: How Houseplants Took Over Our Homes.
Ferns were popular in Victorian England because 'they didn't need a lot of light, so they survived quite well with all of the heavy drapes and curtains', she said. When indoor pollution because of coal and dust caused plants to die, a local gardener or plant nursery employee would remove dead plants and replace them with new ones, she added.
Today, as people move around, so do the plants, she said. 'They're sort of part of the family, and you are making this cocoon of greenery in your own space.'
Ms Samantha Adler, a certified horticulturist in Brooklyn, New York, who runs Houseplant Concierge, tries to keep her services affordable. In-person visits typically run around US$100, but she offers virtual plant visits on a sliding scale based on what clients can afford, with the goal of inclusivity, she said.
One of her clients, Ms Emma Wisniewski, a 34-year-old policy researcher and graduate student who lives in Queens, the adjacent New York City borough, had 'a couple dozen' plants, including a monstera measuring almost 2m .
'That's probably my baby,' Ms Wisniewski said. To prepare for a trip, she sends a video to Ms Adler with detailed updates on individual plants' specific needs.
'I started typing out an e-mail,' she said. 'Then I thought a video was more convenient, but I guess it is kind of precious.'
Emotional connections with plants can run deep. Clients grieve if a plant dies or sometimes even if its leaves or branches need to be pruned, Mr Easton , the Plant Mon, said. As their personal plant whisperer, he supports them through the process.
'I'm like, 'Look, we're going to let this leaf go. We're going to say a prayer. It's going to come back,'' he said. 'These plants are more immortal than we are.' NYTIMES

No way, locals say VENICE – If a bunch of irate Venetians have their way, the star-studded dream wedding that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancee, Ms Lauren Sánchez, are planning in the ancient city at the end of June could be a nightmare. On June 13 evening, representatives of various citizens groups gathered in a square near Rialto Bridge and vowed to organise a series of protests on June 26-28, when hundreds of guests are expected to descend on the lagoon city for the lavish nuptials of Mr Bezos and Ms Sánchez, a journalist. Although details of the festivities have been wrapped in secrecy, 'we have our moles', said Ms Federica Toninello, a protest organiser, revealing that one of the venues could be the Misericordia, a former charity-turned-events hall. 'Bezos will never get to the Misericordia,' she vowed, urging the roughly 300 people present to take a stand. 'We will line the streets with our bodies, block the canals with lifesavers, dinghies and our boats,' she said to loud applause. Protesters said they were also concerned that the logistics of the wedding, including security for some top-tier guests, will further disrupt the life of Venice's dwindling resident population. The guest list is not public, but Vogue reported that it could include Katy Perry, some of the Kardashians and Eva Longoria, all friends of the bride-to-be. And TMZ reported that Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King had been invited. Reported estimates of what the wedding might cost have been as high as US$21.5 million (S$27.5 million). Part of that cost involves taking a fleet of water taxis out of circulation. One taxi driver who will be involved in transporting guests for the wedding said he had been booked to be on call on June 25-30. City hall officials said that only 30 of the city's 280 water taxis had been booked, and that since Venice was accustomed to hosting major events, citizens would not be inconvenienced. More than 600 couples marry each year in Venice, 'recognised as a city of love on an international level', and this was just one wedding more, the statement said. Some Venetians think it's one wedding too many. On June12, activists unfurled a large banner with a bold red X over Mr Bezos' name from the steeple of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, on an island that will be another of the Bezos-Sánchez wedding venues. 'Let's make sure that Venice is not remembered as a postcard venue where Bezos had his wedding, but as the city that did not bend to oligarchs,' said another protester Na Haby Stella Faye. In More than Grades, a monthly series by The Straits Times, we tell the stories of youth who are making waves in school and beyond. SINGAPORE – She was on a conventional path to success, having done well enough at the Primary School Leaving Examination to get into the six-year Integrated Programme (IP), and even gained entry into the Art Elective Programme to pursue her interest in art. But in her fifth year of the IP at National Junior College, Elise Lim decided to put it all aside – to go into fashion. She had taken an interest in cosplay in the fourth year, and tried her hand at making character wigs and props, and tailoring costumes. Also feeling demotivated from not doing as well as she had hoped in secondary school, she made a switch to pursue a course in fashion design and management at Temasek Polytechnic (TP), something she had dreamt of exploring since her younger days. Not everyone would have approved of her decision. 'It's not common for people to drop out of the IP, and a lot of parents could be worried that this is an unstable future, which is true, because the design and art field is unstable,' Elise said, adding that junior college (JC) is typically seen as the 'safe path' for students. Three years on, the 19-year-old, who is in her third year in polytechnic, has amassed more than 94,000 followers on TikTok, where she posts tutorials on how to make wigs, and other cosplay content. Her most viral video, where she cosplays the 2023 design of a virtual character named 'magical mirai miku' with a self-made wig, has more than 12.9 million views. ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR She takes commission orders for wigs via her Instagram page on a first come, first served basis, and in between juggling schoolwork, she sends out blasts to her followers to say she is free to take up projects. The prices of her wigs range from US$100 (S$130) to US$700. She has made more than 30 character wigs and more than 10 props, some of which are commissioned orders for international customers. 'I first started playing video games like Valorant and League Of Legends in secondary school, and afterwards I saw all these people online cosplaying these super-interesting-looking game characters,' she said. Realising how much commissioning good-quality cosplay wigs and props would cost, she decided to try making them on her own at the end of 2022. She did this by watching online tutorials, speaking to other cosplayers at conventions and looking for cheap supplies online. Her mother, who wanted to be known only as Mrs Lim, has been supportive of her decision to pursue an unconventional path. My main concern is her frequent exposure to chemicals when making wigs, and I hope she takes care to protect herself,' said the 52-year-old, who did not want to reveal her occupation. Elise's father died when she was younger. She is an only child. When The Straits Times visited Elise's work studio in her attic in April, more than five bright blue wigs were displayed on her work table. Equipped with a sewing machine and other tools, the room was also filled with various props she has made over the years. These include a 1m-long shark-inspired rocket launcher and machine gun based on the ones belonging to the Arcane character, Jinx. The Arcane series is a science-fantasy show based on the League Of Legends game. Some other works-in-progress include a crochet top for a small crafting online business she runs and a drill-curl hairstyle wig for a League Of Legends character, Gwen. Her costume accessories and props are made with materials including ethylene-vinyl acetate foam and recycled materials such as cardboard tubes from online shopping platforms like Taobao where supplies are cheaper. When she is in a rush, she buys her materials from Chinatown. Sitting on a stool, Elise showed ST how she makes a wig – starting with a pre-coloured base wig bought online and trimming the synthetic hair to the desired length, keeping any excess hair for future use. A base wig is an unstyled wig that can be easily cut, coloured and styled to match a character's specific hairstyle. Afterwards, she works on putting together an internal structure for the wig depending on the hairstyle needed. Elise Lim starts with a pre-coloured base wig bought online and trims the synthetic hair to the desired length, keeping any excess hair for future use. ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR 'I first started styling my wigs on soft toys, and after that I realised I should invest in a mannequin head,' she recalled with a laugh. 'It's very time-consuming – you have to work slowly because the glue needs time to dry, but it's very easy to be impatient and want to move on to the next step,' she said, adding that the longest time she took to make a wig was 60 hours. 'This is skilled labour, so I had to practise and learn, and train. And the cost of living in Singapore is also high, so I think my price is quite justified,' she said. People often reach out to her asking if she can make specific props, but she has difficulty putting a reasonable price on some of them as she has spent up to 90 hours making some, she added. Her goal in the long term is to open an independent commissioning studio with one of her cosplay friends, Jade Tang, 21. 'We both get commission requests sometimes, so we think that if we continue to develop our skills, this is something we can do in the long run,' said Elise, who will graduate from polytechnic in a year. ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR The polytechnic course curriculum aligns more with her interests, as she has more freedom to be creative and put her own personality into her works. 'It's more fruitful because the skills that I've learnt are more tangible. At the end of each module, you would have a very clear idea of what you gained from it,' Elise said. After graduating, she plans to take a gap year to enrol in short courses related to making clothes. She is also exploring studying costume design at an arts university in China, Belgium or Italy. 'I want to go to an art university, so if I stayed in JC, my focus would be split between academics and the arts, and I would have come out the other end with nothing good. I would have no good academics or a good portfolio, and also wasted two years, so I switched to TP.' Speak to teachers, parents and others in the field before making decisions – this is Elise's advice to young people wondering whether they should follow their dreams, including those out of the ordinary. 'If they are confident they can earn (money) and have done research in their field, then there's nothing wrong with doing something a bit more unconventional,' she said. NEW YORK - Ye made a surprise appearance at Sean "Diddy" Combs' criminal trial on Friday (June 13), expressing support for his fellow rapper as he defends against sex trafficking charges. Dressed all in white, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, arrived at the Manhattan federal courthouse in a Maybach, and entered through a public entrance. Ye nodded when asked by a reporter whether he was there to support Combs. He left the courthouse about 35 minutes later. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution, and if convicted could face life in prison. He has been held in a Brooklyn jail since his September arrest. Ye has also faced controversy for antisemitic and pro-Nazi remarks, prompting businesses such as Adidas to sever ties. Friday's testimony included an appearance by Jonathan Perez, who had been a personal assistant to Combs for three years, as a prosecution witness. Perez said he helped set up sex sessions for Combs, referring to them as "king nights." Other witnesses have called those sessions "Freak Offs" and "hotel nights." He also said getting drugs for Combs was part of the job, and he ensured a Gucci pouch containing cocaine, Adderall and other drugs was in Combs' backpack when the rapper travelled. Under cross-examination from Combs' lawyer Brian Steel, Perez said he never thought a former Combs girlfriend, who testified for six days under the pseudonym Jane and complained of abuse, resisted participating in the sex sessions. Earlier on Friday, a Homeland Security special agent testified about firearms and other items that law enforcement found in a March 2024 raid of Combs' Los Angeles home. After jurors were dismissed for the day, US District Judge Arun Subramanian, who oversees the trial, said he plans to dismiss one of the 12 jurors for making inconsistent statements about his residence, and replace him with an alternate. Subramanian said the inconsistencies gave him "worry about deception and lying," and whether the juror might be unable to follow instructions. Combs' lawyers expressed concern about the dismissal, and the court is further discussing the matter. During an earlier trial break outside the jury's presence, prosecutor Maurene Comey renewed her complaint first made last week about Combs' "nodding emphatically" at times about testimony he agreed with, on concern it might influence jurors. Steel denied that Combs' conduct was improper. The judge said he would try to watch for inappropriate gestures, but that it was normal to react to testimony and "impossible to police" everyone. Prosecutors are expected to continue their case next week, after which Combs' legal team can begin his defence. Also known in his career as Puff Daddy and P.
