Haidilao operator Super Hi swings to US$11.9 million Q1 profit on forex gains, delivery growth

[SINGAPORE] Super Hi International, the operator of Haidilao's international business, posted a net profit of US$11.9 million for the first quarter ended Mar 31, reversing a net loss of US$4.5 million in the same period the year before.
The turnaround was mainly driven by a US$20.4 million reduction in net foreign exchange losses due to currency fluctuations – particularly the revaluation of local currencies against the US dollar – said Super Hi in a press release on May 21.
Earnings per share for the company – which is listed on both the Nasdaq and Stock Exchange of Hong Kong – stood at US$0.02, up from a loss of US$0.01 a year earlier.
Revenue rose 5.4 per cent year on year (yoy) to US$197.8 million, from US$187.6 million.
This was led by a 37.9 per cent increase in revenue from the delivery business to US$4 million, up from US$2.9 million from the year-ago period.
Super Hi attributed the jump in delivery revenue to sustained investment and marketing efforts in the delivery business, as well as the expansion of its delivery network alongside growing restaurant coverage.

Revenue from restaurant operations grew by 4.5 per cent to US$188.4 million, while that from its other business, including retail food products, rose 22.7 per cent to US$5.4 million.
Super Hi did not disclose the performance of its Singapore operations, but noted that average daily revenue per restaurant in South-east Asia fell 3.2 per cent to US$15,300.
In contrast, average daily revenue rose by 19.9 per cent in East Asia to US$19,300, and by 3.3 per cent in North America to US$22,200.
Its income from operation fell 33.9 per cent yoy to US$8.2 million, while income from operation margin narrowed to 4.1 per cent from 6.6 per cent.
The decline was mainly due to higher spending on customer and employee benefit initiatives; increased outsourcing and maintenance costs from network expansion; and higher short-term lease payments.
Total guest visits rose 6.8 per cent yoy to 7.8 million.
The group also opened four new Haidilao outlets and closed three underperforming ones during the quarter.
As at end-March, it operated 123 restaurants outside China, up 3 per cent from 119 a year earlier, with South-east Asia remaining its largest market (73 outlets).
Chief executive and executive director Yang Lijuan said Super Hi focused on refining operational strategies during the first quarter of the year, to boost customer value and loyalty through pricing adjustments, improved portion value and more diverse dining formats.
Yang said the group will continue advancing its 'Pomegranate Plan', launched in 2024 to drive product diversification.
The initiative aims to grow new dining formats such as fast food and halal hotpot, supported by specialised teams in operations, product development and marketing.

Temasek joins Microsoft, BlackRock and MGX to develop AI infrastructure

[SINGAPORE] Temasek has joined a consortium backed by Microsoft, BlackRock and tech investment company MGX to invest and expand artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to BlackRock's investor day presentation slides on Thursday (Jun 12). The Singapore state investment company has joined AI Infrastructure Partnership, a group that also includes BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners, the slides showed. AIP, formed in September with a goal to initially invest more than US$30 billion in AI-related projects, is one of the world's largest efforts to invest in data centres and energy facilities needed to power AI applications such as ChatGPT. It aims to mobilise up to US$100 billion including debt financing for such investments, which will focus on the United States. Temasek's participation comes after the Kuwait Investment Authority joined AIP earlier in June. The sovereign wealth fund of Kuwait was the first non-founder financial anchor investor to join the consortium, which also counts partners including Nvidia and billionaire Elon Musk's xAI. 'Temasek's investment in the AI Infrastructure Partnership reflects our focus on the big shifts and trends of the future,' Ravi Lambah, Temasek's head of strategic initiatives, said in an email to Reuters. 'AI is potentially the most transformative and impactful technology for all sectors and businesses,' he added. Temasek did not disclose financial details of the investment. The global investment company had a net portfolio value of S$389 billion as of March 31, 2024, according to its website. REUTERS

Myanmar recovery dented by devastating quake, World Bank says

[NAYPYIDAW] Myanmar's economy is headed for its worst performance since the pandemic as the strife-torn country reels from the impact of a devastating earthquake in March that's estimated to have caused US$11 billion in damage, according to the World Bank. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake on Mar 28 affected more than 17 million people and wrecked widespread damages to residential buildings, public infrastructure and heritage sites in areas accounting for about one-third of Myanmar's gross domestic product. The impact of the quake still continues to disrupt lives and livelihood, 'exacerbating the already very difficult conditions in the affected areas,' the bank said in a report Thursday. The dent to economic output due to the earthquake will be equivalent to about 4 per cent of Myanmar's GDP in the fiscal year ending March 2026, the development bank estimated. The economy will contract 2.5 per cent in 2025-2026 before rebounding to a growth of 3 per cent the following year due to rebuilding efforts and the low base, it said. Prior to the earthquake, which left 3,800 people dead and 207,000 people displaced in townships including Mandalay and Naypyidaw, the World Bank had forecast a 2 per cent expansion this year. The worst-affected regions are expected to lose about a third of their production between April and September, it said. 'The economic aftershocks of the earthquake have struck on the back of ongoing challenges from conflict,' the World Bank said. The nation has been struggling with a civil war, stinging inflation and a shortage of US dollars since the military seized power in 2021 February. A raging conflict between rebel groups fighting for independence and the regime has displaced about 3.5 million people, the lender said, citing United Nations estimates. Inflation, which quickened to 34.1 per cent in the year to April, may remain high at around 31 per cent in the current fiscal year due to supply-chain disruptions associated with the quake and conflict-related logistics challenges. The poverty rate may climb 2.8 percentage points from an already high ratio of 31 per cent last year, according to the World Bank. Myanmar's budget deficit is seen widening to 6.9 per cent by the end of March next year, up from 5.1 per cent a year earlier with much of the deficit funding coming from the central bank, the report said. 'The earthquake caused significant loss of life and displacement, while exacerbating already difficult economic conditions, further testing the resilience of Myanmar's people' Melinda Good, World Bank Division Director for Thailand and Myanmar said in a statement. 'Recovery efforts are essential to help the most vulnerable populations.' BLOOMBERG

Indonesia invites foreign stakes in $102 billion seawall to shield coasts from floods

The seawall would prevent floods along the north coast of Java, Indonesia's most populous island. FILE PHOTO: REUTERS JAKARTA - Foreign investors are invited for Indonesia's plan to build a US$80 billion (S$102 billion) seawall hundreds of kilometres long to prevent floods along the north coast of its most populous island Java, President Prabowo Subianto said on June 12 . The seawall project expands on a 2014 plan by the capital Jakarta's government to protect the city from rising sea levels and land subsidence that have caused frequent flooding along the north Java coast. Mr Prabowo said he would form an agency to run the giant seawall project, stretching from Banten to East Java provinces and which could take 20 years to complete. Officials have said the wall would be about 700km long. 'One of the most vital infrastructure projects, which is a mega project, that we need to do promptly is the giant seawall across the northern Java coast,' Mr Prabowo said in a speech at an infrastructure event. '(Sea) waters have threatened the lives of our people,' he said, citing some towns in central Java. Sea levels along Indonesian coasts rose an average of 4.25 millimetres annually from 1992 to 2024, but the rate has accelerated in recent years due to climate change, according to the country's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency. Mr Prabowo said he had invited investment from countries such as China and Japan, without elaborating. Experts say Jakarta is sinking due to excessive extraction of groundwater, leading the central government to plan its move to a new capital in the jungles of Borneo island.
