‘Opportunist' Tengku Zafrul will be a PKR liability, says Puad

One of Umno's biggest mistakes was 'spoiling' Tengku Zafrul Aziz and giving him the red carpet treatment, according to Puad Zarkashi (left).
PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi trained his guns at Tengku Zafrul Aziz for quitting the party, saying that the federal minister will become a liability for PKR.
Describing Tengku Zafrul as an opportunist, Puad said that if PKR accepted the former into its fold, it would be 'a stab in the back for Umno'.
Puad's remarks came shortly after Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno member, as well as from all party posts, with plans to join PKR.
Puad told FMT: 'Umno shouldn't mourn his departure. Let him go. He's simply trying to fill the void left by (former PKR deputy president) Rafizi Ramli. I believe Tengku Zafrul will become a liability to PKR.'
Rafizi, who was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar in the contest for the deputy presidency at the recent party polls, resigned as economy minister on Wednesday.
Tengku Zafrul's decision confirms rumours in February that he would leave Umno and join PKR before his term as a senator expires at the year's end.
Tengku Zafrul said he had conveyed his intention to join PKR to party president Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the prime minister. He also said he would go through the usual procedure to apply to be a PKR member.
Puad, who is Rengit assemblyman, said one of Umno's biggest mistakes was 'spoiling' Tengku Zafrul too much by giving him the red carpet treatment.
'He was made an election candidate, a division chief, a Supreme Council member, and appointed as investment, trade and industry minister.
'It should never be repeated. Umno must stop bringing in individuals with no roots or commitment to the party. Tengku Zafrul never had any real loyalty to Umno,' Puad said.
Tengku Zafrul was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and also headed the Kota Raja Umno division.
He had contested the Kuala Selangor seat during the 2022 general election but lost to Amanah's Dzulkefly Ahmad by 1,002 votes in a four-cornered contest.
In December last year, there were rumours that he was planning to join PKR in an apparent bid to become the next Selangor menteri besar. He later denied being in talks over state-level positions.
But speculation was further fuelled after Anwar confirmed that talks were under way for Tengku Zafrul to join the party.
Puad today said Tengku Zafrul should have been expelled earlier, when news of his plans to join PKR made headlines. 'He even hadn't been attending Supreme Council meetings for some time.'

No urgency for cabinet reshuffle, says PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said there is no urgency to carry out a Cabinet reshuffle at this time. He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. Anwar said the Cabinet continues to operate as usual and that temporary arrangements will be made to ensure continuity in governance. On May 28, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that they had submitted their leave applications and resignation letters, which will take effect on June 17 and July 4, respectively.

‘Let it be': Anwar says PKR hasn't deliberated on Tengku Zafrul's application, warns against overanalysis

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said PKR has not had any detailed discussion over Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz's application to joint. The PKR president also urged the public and media to avoid overthinking the move by the minister formerly from Umno. 'Yes, he has applied to join PKR, but we have not deliberated on it thoroughly. For now, let it be. 'There's no need for excessive interpretations that might be unhealthy,' he told reporters when met at Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 here. Anwar said the application would be reviewed with fairness, in consultation with the party's grassroots. MORE TO COME

[UPDATED] PKR yet to discuss Tengku Zafrul's resignation with Umno

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR has not yet held discussions with its unity government partner, Umno, regarding the resignation of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Its president and Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the party respects Tengku Zafrul's decision and will consult Umno on the next steps. "Tengku Zafrul is a minister who has carried out his duties well. Many of our investments, worth hundreds of billions, have been managed through his efforts via Matrade, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) and the current government. "As for his decision to apply (to join PKR), we have not reached that stage yet. Let him complete his Haj first, and there is no need for unhealthy interpretation (regarding his resignation). "(But) of course, for PKR, we must discuss the matter with our partners in the unity government and consider it carefully," he said when met by reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF) 2025 today. Anwar also said that Tengku Zafrul's position as the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister is not affected. "We want him to continue his duties given his strong performance as minister, and the country needs his contribution," he said. When asked about Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's statement that the ministerial post should be allocated to Umno to maintain the party's original quota of seven ministers, Anwar reiterated that "nothing has been discussed." "We have not yet discussed it with the president (Zahid), it is too early for that," he said. On Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from all posts in Umno, along with his membership in the party. In announcing his resignation, Tengku Zafrul also expressed his intention to join PKR. He said after much self-reflection and consideration of various factors, he has decided to do so due to "compatibility and suitability." Following this, Zahid said he was not surprised by Tengku Zafrul's announcement to quit Umno and join PKR, as they had discussed the matter during a parliamentary session three months ago. The deputy prime minister, who is also the chairman of Barisan Nasional, however, said it is unethical for any party within the unity government to accept membership applications from former leaders or members of its allies. Zahid said that following Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave the party, the unity government should also allocate another ministerial position to Umno to maintain the original quota of seven ministers previously allocated to the party.
