Avondhu outclass Carbery in Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges opener
Avondhu 3-28 Carbery 0-20 Avondhu had too much class for Carbery as they romped to victory in the Co-Op SuperStores Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges clash at Ballinlough on Tuesday evening. This opening round encounter was dominated by the North Cork outfit from start to finish. They had a very balanced team with a nice spread of scorers and a resolute defence. They have the potential to do well in this section, but stiffer tests lie ahead. Avondhu will now meet Duhallow in Round 2 while Carbery take on Muskerry. The winners set out their stall early on, showing incredible accuracy as they pushed into a 0-7 to 0-4 lead after the first quarter. Stephen Condon, Colin O'Brien and Luke Keating all influential in raising white flags. The latter extended Avondhu's advantage, but in fairness to Carbery, they were having a lot of the ball, but wayward shooting was leaving them down. Avondhu put together five unanswered points to lead 0-13 to 0-4 with nine minutes to the break. Caolan O'Donovan, Peter Collins and Conor O'Sullivan efforts did leave Carbery just six points adrift, 0-13 to 0-7. Avondhu finished the half the better though, hitting three of the last five points, 0-16 to 0-9 at half-time. The game was as good as over just a minute into the new half when Johnnie Murphy raised a green flag for the North Cork team. The game tipped along as the winners led 1-20 to 0-15 after the third quarter with the excellent O'Brien scoring some gorgeous points for Avondhu. They tacked on two more points before Carbery's best player, Caolan O'Donovan, sent over two great scores, 1-22 to 0-17 with 10 minutes to go. Avondhu dominated the closing stages in a free-flowing contest with very little bite or tackling. The North Cork men were 1-26 to 0-19 clear after 57 minutes before Murphy and Condon bagged goals in quick succession. Avondhu landed two of the last three points to run out easy winners. Scorers for Avondhu: S Condon (1-6, 1f), C O'Brien (0-7, 2f), J Murphy (2-0), L Keating (0-5), J Magner, P Walsh (0-3 each), L Cronin (0-2), D O'Reilly, S O'Callaghan (0-1 each). Weekend fixtures confirmed as Kildare get Newbridge double header
The revamped Cedral St Conleth's Park will host a Kildare double header on Saturday. Fresh from their superb Joe McDonagh Cup final win over Laois, the Kildare hurlers are back in action six days later as they face Dublin in the All-Ireland preliminary hurling quarter-final in Newbridge, which, at the very least, will act as a useful barometer for manager Brian Dowling ahead of their return to the Leinster SHC in 2026. The game will have a 4pm throw-in and will be followed by the Kildare footballers' Tailteann Cup quarter-final against Offaly, which gets underway at 6.30pm. It will be the third meeting of the counties this year after they were paired together in this morning's draw, with Offaly beating Kildare in round six of the League and again in the Division Three final at Croke Park. There's another repeat of a League final with Wexford travelling to Limerick, who beat them in the Division Four decider. That quarter-final will take place on Sunday at the TUS Gaelic Grounds. The other two quarter-finals see Wicklow entertain Westmeath in Aughrim, also on Sunday afternoon, with Fermanagh at home to Sligo on Saturday. The Laois-Tipperary hurling preliminary quarter-final will be played on Saturday afternoon at Laois Hire O'Moore Park at 1.45pm as O'Moore boss Tommy Fitzgerald faces the difficult task of getting his players up for a game against top tier opposition just days after losing a season-defining game. Tailteann Cup quarter-finals Saturday, June 14 Fermanagh v Sligo, Brewster Park, 5pm. Kildare v Offaly, Cedral St Conleth's Park, 6.30pm. Sunday, June 15 Wicklow v Westmeath, Echelon Park, 1.15pm. Limerick v Wexford, TUS Gaelic Grounds, 3.45pm. All-Ireland hurling preliminary quarter-finals Laois v Tipperary, Laois Hire O'Moore Park, 1.45pm. Kildare v Dublin, Cedral St Conleth's Park, 4pm.

Tailteann Cup Quarter-Final draw throws up heavyweight pairings
The Tailteann Cup quarter-final draw has thrown up two repeat League Final pairings from earlier this season. Competition favourites Kildare will go head to head with Offaly again, with the Faithful County having defeated the Lily Whites in the Division 3 decider at Croke Park at the end of March. Kildare, as group toppers, will have home advantage for that one with the tie set to be played at the redeveloped St. Conleth's Park, Newbridge. All four quarter-finals are scheduled for this weekend as the second tier competition ramps up a gear following last weekend's preliminary quarter-finals. Another repeat pairing comes in the shape of Limerick and Wexford, with the Treaty men claiming the Division 4 title against John Hegarty's side earlier this year. Jimmy Lee's Limerick will enjoy home advantage for that one after topping their group and will be favoured to move on to the last four, despite Wexford's resounding win over Antrim at the weekend. Oisin McConville's Wicklow are at home to Westmeath, the only Division 2 side from this year in the competition, with Dermot McCabe's men slightly favoured to emerge in this one. After racking up 3-26 against Laois at the weekend, the Lake County may be finding form at just the right time and could do damage in a competition they won three years ago. The final tie of the round sees Sligo go to Enniskillen to face Fermanagh. Tailteann Cup victory secures a golden ticket to next year's All-Ireland series, regardless of where teams finish in the League. For Kildare and Offaly, both in Division 2 next season, it would take the pressure off next year to finish high up their League. A sixth place finish in 2026 would see them stay in Division 2 and go into the All-Ireland. The stakes are particularly high here for Leinster sides like Kildare, Offaly, Wexford, Westmeath and Wicklow, due to the longer road they have to travel to a provincial final. This makes it less likely they will get into next year's All-Ireland via one of the top two seeds placings available to the provincial finalists in all four provinces. It's a similar situation with Fermanagh, as Ulster is particularly tough and with the Erne Men playing Division 3 next year, getting into the All-Ireland via league placings is highly unlikely. The Tailteann Cup is currently their best chance of making the All-Ireland in 2026. Tailteann Cup Quarter-Final Draw: Fermanagh v Sligo Wicklow v Westmeath Kildare v Offaly Limerick v Wexford
