Exclusive-Japan Post planning $4 billion sale of shares in Japan Post Bank, sources say
By Miho Uranaka and Takaya Yamaguchi
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan Post Holdings is planning to sell shares in Japan Post Bank which could total some 600 billion yen ($4.02 billion), two sources familiar with the matter said, in the latest loosening of ties between the businesses.
The postal giant, whose shareholders include the Japanese government, plans to reduce its stake below 50%, said the two sources and a third person familiar with the plan.
That would give Japan Post Bank more freedom to do business as restrictions intended to protect private companies would be relaxed.
The sale comes as corporate governance reforms are accelerating in Japan with "parent-child" listings, where companies have a listed subsidiary, being scrutinised and companies under pressure to increase free-float share ratios.
The sale could be decided as soon as this week, the sources said. Japan Post Bank is also planning to launch a share buyback, two of the sources said.
The sources declined to be named as the information is not public. Shares in Japan Post Bank fell 4% following the Reuters report before trimming losses to close down 1.5%.
Japan Post and Japan Post Bank said they are considering various options from a capital policy perspective, but no decisions have been made.
Japan Post, Japan Post Bank and Japan Post Insurance listed in 2015 in what was Japan's largest privatisation in about three decades.
Japan Post cut its exposure to Japan Post Bank in 2023 and currently owns 61.5%. The postal giant has already reduced its shareholding in Japan Post Insurance to 49.8%.
Japan Post Bank's net profit for the nine months to December climbed 17% to 308 billion yen as rising interest rates boosted profits.

GM to invest $4 billion in three US facilities as it ramps up gas-powered vehicles
By Kalea Hall and David Shepardson DETROIT/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -General Motors said on Tuesday it is planning to invest about $4 billion over the next two years at three U.S. facilities in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee as it moves to boost production of gas-powered vehicles amid slowing electric vehicle demand. The company said it will begin production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks at its Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, in early 2027. Orion Assembly was previously slated to build electric trucks starting next year. The move calls into question GM's plan to end the production of gas-powered cars and trucks by 2035. It was welcomed by the White House, which has imposed significant tariffs on imported vehicles to pressure automakers to move more production to the United States. In March, GM CEO Mary Barra met with U.S. President Donald Trump to talk about investment plans and told the president GM needed relief from California emissions and federal fuel economy requirements in order to expand U.S. production, sources told Reuters. Trump is set to sign legislation on Thursday to rescind California's 2035 zero-emission vehicle rules. "No president has taken a stronger interest in reviving America's once-great auto industry than President Trump, and GM's investment announcement builds on trillions of dollars in other historic investment commitments to Make in America," White House spokesman Kush Desai said. GM's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas is set to start building the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt by the end of this year, and GM says it will now also build the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox starting in mid-2027. In a statement, the largest U.S. automaker said it expects to make "new future investments in Fairfax for GM's next generation of affordable EVs." GM last month said it is also investing $888 million at a New York propulsion plant to increase gas engine production. At its Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant, GM will add production of the gas-powered Chevy Blazer beginning in 2027. It will be built alongside the electric Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq SUVs as well as the gas-powered Cadillac XT5. The gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer are both currently produced in Mexico. The Equinox will continue to be built in Mexico once production starts at U.S. facilities in order to supply markets outside of North America. Mexico's economy minister Marcelo Ebrard said in a social media post he talked with GM and said there is no expectation of any plant closure or layoffs at the automaker's Mexican plants. GM said it expects annual capital spending will be between $10 billion and $12 billion through 2027, reflecting increased U.S. investment, prioritization of key programs, and efficiency offsets. New Johnson County Asian bakery and coffee shop that fans ‘raved' about opens
Chocolate buns, strawberry cheesecake, caramel iced coffee with sea salt cold foam — customers ordered these treats and dozens more at the opening of 85°C Bakery Cafe in Overland Park. The Taiwanese chain — which entered the U.S. market in 2008 — just opened its first Kansas City area location Wednesday. It has a presence in California, Texas, Utah, Washington, Hawaii and beyond. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., customers flowed in and out the former Red Shoes space at 12061 Metcalf Ave., with lines spilling out the door at times. On one side of the bakery, customers lined up with plastic trays and slid past rows of individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. More patrons gathered at the front counter to order drinks, like brown sugar oat lattes, milk tea with coffee jelly, strawberry matcha and frozen marble taro smoothies. A pastry case held specialty full cakes and slices. Flavors include tiramisu cheesecake, macchiato cream cake, strawberry chocolate mousse and ube cream. First-time customer Jennifer Her brought her family in after seeing the excitement over social media and hearing about it from others. 'We've had friends that have gone, and they've raved about it,' she said while her three little girls happily sipped their smoothies. 'It's really fresh and tasty. I've had my Vietnamese coffee, and it's really good.' Trinh Huynh has been to the location in Los Angeles and was excited to see it had opened in the Kansas City metro. Her favorite item? The miniature lemon cupcakes. Since the store is still in its soft opening phase, the cupcakes weren't available Wednesday. Huynh is anxiously awaiting that treat. 'I'll keep coming back ... until they have it,' she said. 85°C Bakery Cafe was founded in 2003 after Cheng-Hsueh Wu visited a cafe in a five-star hotel and was taken aback by its expensive prices, according to the chain's website. He sought to create something of similar quality that was much more attainable. (A medium iced latte at the Johnson County cafe, for example, is $4.55. Many of the pastries are under $3.) Its name comes from what Wu thought to be the perfect brewing temperature for coffee. Meanwhile, South Korean cafe Paris Baguette is quickly moving toward opening its first two metro locations at 11137 W. 95th St. and 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park. Exact opening dates for both locations were not immediately available Wednesday, though construction for the Oak Park Mall location appears to be moving steadily along. Last year, partner Mike Issa said he's hoping to open more Paris Baguette spots in the metro. International bakery Tous Les Jours, on the other hand, has been open in Overland Park for close to a decade at 10348 Metcalf Ave. It, too, hails from South Korea. Japanese discount store Daiso opened a week ago at 14673 W. 119th St., offering home goods, snacks, beauty products and more.
