Florida Panthers veteran Brad Marchand's name wasn't among the first six players named to Team Canada's Olympic roster on Monday.

The first Canadian squad includes Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Brayden Point, Cale Makar, and Marchand's teammate Sam Reinhart.
General manager Doug Armstrong addressed the decision directly, calling it one of the toughest choices in the early selection process, although leaving the door open for his eventual addition.
The 37-year-old winger was part of the original First Six projected during last year's 4 Nations lead-up, but fellow Panthers forward Reinhart ultimately took the one 'open' slot over the older Marchand.
Armstrong made it clear that Marchand wasn't cut due to a lack of performance, especially noting his strong playoff showing this spring, as he's scored 20 points in 22 postseason games through Monday's announcement.

'I had a good chat with Brad,' Armstrong said. 'He's certainly a candidate to make this team. What he did for our team at the 4 Nations — the character and the ability to bring the team together — plus what he's done in the playoffs here, it's very inspiring.'
Armstrong said age and physical shape factored into the choice.

Reinhart's combination of consistency, two-way play, and postseason pedigree pushed him over Marchand and other possible options.
'What we saw at the 4 Nations: Sam is just a well-balanced player who can touch every aspect of our team,' Armstrong said. 'There was no question he was going to be on our team. He was just a natural selection now based on his play and his history of great play in big events.'

Reinhart, who finished the regular season with 81 points in 79 games, has scored 11 points in 14 postseason outings.

DJ Lagway Injury Scare Not the Only Red Flag for Billy Napier's Florida Gators in 2025

DJ Lagway Injury Scare Not the Only Red Flag for Billy Napier's Florida Gators in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Billy Napier and Florida Gators are seriously dependant on DJ Lagway to succeed this season. Even last year, he chimed in when they really needed a miracle to bring the season back from the dead. Advertisement ESPN college football's insider Greg McElroy believes Gators' will face their "worst case scenario" if DJ Lagway is not regularly and optimally available to play for them. But outside his concerns, there's another threat looming on the team. Gators face the much-talked about gruelling schedule. Again, they were partially able to survive it last year. But this year is a whole new story. Last year, it didn't. They got stronger as the season went along and started to win some of those games down the stretch that you thought they might be out of gas in... ...But this year, they have one of the hardest schedules in college football." Advertisement Gators kick off their season against relatively easy opponents, Long Island and South Florida, in week 1 and week 2 respectively. But this is just the silence before the potential storm. The first two games are followed by four brutal match ups for Florida starting with LSU, followed by Miami, Texas and finally Texas A&M. According to ESPN's Football Power Index, Florida is set to finish 6-6 owing to their difficult schedule. But Greg McElroy sees them overcoming all of these odds given their tremendous momentum from last year's final stretch. Gators were able to garner impact wins with DJ Lagway at the centre. The win against Ole Miss could serve as a morale booster as it resulted it Lane Kiffin's Rebels missing the playoff. DJ Lagway is still limited in practice but he still has two more months to recover from his injury. And since he was leading the team for the better part of last season, he will not have early pains like a starter would have had. Fever React to Caitlin Clark, Indiana Players' Pregame Outfits on Tuesday

Fever React to Caitlin Clark, Indiana Players' Pregame Outfits on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever enter Tuesday's game against the Connecticut Sun with a 5-5 record. They are coming off a huge victory over the New York Liberty and now look to string wins together. Advertisement Making things more interesting, the Fever have a chance to punch their ticket to the Commissioner's Cup championship for the first time in history. However, they will need to beat the Sun and hope that the Liberty take down the Atlanta Dream in order to achieve that. The good news for the Fever is that they have Caitlin Clark back in the fold, and she doesn't look rusty at all despite missing five straight games due to a quad injury. Clark recorded a near triple-double of 32 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in Indiana's 102-88 win over New York the last time out. While the Fever's focus is on the crucial game that awaits, that didn't stop them from making a statement off the court before the showdown starts. Why the Panthers made sure first-time Cup winners got to celebrate first

As the team captain, Aleksander Barkov hoisted the Stanley Cup first on Tuesday after the Florida Panthers repeated as champions with a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. But after that, Barkov and the team's leaders made a statement as to who got the Cup next. First it was defenseman Nate Schmidt. Then defenseman Seth Jones. Then forward Tomas Nosek, backup goaltender Vitek Vanecek, forward A.J. Greer, forward Jesper Boqvist and forward Mackie Samoskevich. The seven players on the active roster who were in the lineup at some point during the playoffs who had not won the Stanley Cup before Tuesday. 'A bunch of us talked about at the start,' Panthers star winger Matthew Tkachuk said. 'Those guys who haven't won yet, let them feel it. Let them go first. I mean, as much as I wanted to steal it out of Barky's hands myself, like we wouldn't be here without the new guys. So, so special for them, and they deserved it.' While Tkachuk has praised the newcomers — the 'fresh blood' as he called them after Florida secured its spot back into the Stanley Cup Final — even they were happily surprised by the team's decision. 'I didn't know,' Schmidt said. 'He just looked at me and he gave me the 'Cap' death stare. You don't turn those eyes away. No I didn't know. It was awesome. I had no idea that it was going to be me. He looked me and he said, 'Hey, the guys that haven't done it before, we're going to take a back seat to you guys.' It means a lot.' Added Jones: 'It shows right? I mean, you hear stories about how special this team is and the leadership, and you see it firsthand. You see the way these guys are so selfless, so humble, and it shows on the ice.' The emotions understandably ran high for that group. They had waited their whole lives for this moment. Now, it's here. 'It's unbelievable,' Greer said. 'We were just here to help the group, and as a new guy, I wasn't trying to change much, just add a little flair and a little new energy to the group. So I'm so thankful to be a Florida Panther. Being able to lift that Stanley Cup just puts everything into perspective what all the blood, sweat and tears truly does.' As the game wound down, Nosek shared a moment with coach Paul Maurice, breaking down in tears on his coach's shoulder. The reality had hit him. There were bumps in the road during his one season in Florida. But the end result was the ultimate goal: He is now a Stanley Cup champion. 'I'm so glad I signed here,' Nosek said.
