The No. 1 piece of advice a Dropbox exec has for job seekers looking to break into tech
Like many tech execs, Dropbox's VP of product and growth agrees that job seekers should still learn basic technical skills — but his No. 1 piece of advice is to "show your work."
Morgan Brown told Business Insider that it's about showcasing your capabilities, rather than showing how you arrived at an answer.
"Publish your stuff, publish your thinking," Brown said in an interview. "Build the apps, build the websites."
Brown said he would give that advice at any time, but it's especially relevant in the age of AI. In a time where there's an abundance of free tools and online courses, Brown said there's nothing stopping job seekers from building products on their own. All candidates need to get started is a phone and internet access, Brown said.
"There are so many opportunities to kind of, like, show what you have to offer right now without kind of any credential necessary other than just your work," Brown said.
The Dropbox product exec said that when he suggests building a product, people sometimes say that they don't know enough or don't have good ideas. That shouldn't be a deterrent, Brown said.
"First of all, no one's paying any attention," Brown said, adding that you can "learn by doing" and eventually create a body of work to point to that some people will end up noticing.
Brown said his advice comes from the perspective of someone who isn't a "classically trained product manager." Despite spending years in product management at Facebook, Instagram, and Shopify, the now Dropbox VP didn't have a typical start to the realm of Big Tech. In fact, he didn't finish his college degree until a few years ago.
"I was a biology major, you know, I failed out of college. It took me 20 years to get my degree," Brown said.
After dropping out of school, Brown started his first job in data operations at a startup in the midst of the dot-com boom. It was a time before the rise of APIs, and the bulk of his work started with typing information from physical newspapers. He said search engine optimization had recently emerged, and he had to figure out how to get web traffic.
"I basically was a self-taught digital marketer, fully based on like what kind of impact we could have," Brown said. "And then from there I went to digital marketing."
In addition to learning how to generate traffic, Brown ended up teaching himself how to create a website and blog, and eventually how to build products. While Brown said he's grateful for the experience and where it led him, he said he learned what he knows now "at the school of hard knocks" and experienced "a lot of failure along the way."
He went from publishing his thoughts online to co-authoring a published book called "Hacking Growth," a guide for driving growth. He said putting his work out there led people to find him and ultimately created opportunities.
"There's nothing stopping anyone from publishing and showing their work," Brown said. "And I think more people that do that, that's where good stuff happens."

A massive trove of 16 billion stolen passwords was discovered — here's what to do
Researchers say they uncovered a massive data leak exposing 16 billion login credentials. The leak involves logins for platforms like Apple, Gmail, and Facebook, posing security risks. Companies advise using two-step authentication and passkeys to protect your accounts. Researchers say they've uncovered one of the largest data leaks in history that involves many popular platforms. The leak includes nearly 16 billion login credentials that could give cybercriminals access to social media and business platforms such as Apple, Gmail, Telegram, Facebook, GitHub, and more, researchers at Cybernews said this week. Bad actors now have "unprecedented access to personal credentials that can be used for account takeover, identity theft, and highly targeted phishing," the researchers said. The number of exposed people or accounts is unknown. The researchers said the data likely comes from malicious software known as infostealers. "What's especially concerning is the structure and recency of these datasets — these aren't just old breaches being recycled. This is fresh, weaponizable intelligence at scale," the researchers said. Cybernews said researchers uncovered the leak when the datasets were exposed for a short period of time. It follows the May discovery of a database containing more than 184 million credentials, including Apple, Facebook, and Google logins, Wired earlier reported. If you're nervous that your logins are at risk, there are steps you can take to make your account safer. You can't unring the bell of an information leak. However, you can take steps to identify if your credentials have been involved in any data breaches and protect yourself in the future. You can check sites like Have I Been Pwned to see if your email has appeared in a data breach. Turning on two-step authentication for your accounts can also help protect them from unauthorized access. Platforms also offer resources to help users secure their accounts. Google encourages users to use protections that don't require a password, like a passkey. It's one of the tech giants, along with Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft, that have been working to move users away from passwords to help secure their accounts. For those who prefer to stick with passwords, Google's password manager can store login credentials and notify users if they appear in a breach, a spokesperson told Business Insider. There's also Google's dark web report, a free tool that tracks whether personal information is floating around in online databases. GitHub, an online coding platform, offers developers a guide on how to implement safety measures in their organizations. The site recommends creating a security policy, having strict password guidelines, and requiring two-factor authorization. The data leak included logs — "often with tokens, cookies, and metadata," which makes it "particularly dangerous for organizations lacking multi-factor authentication or credential hygiene practices," the Cybernews team said. Meta offers a Privacy Checkup tool for users to review their privacy and security account settings. There, you can turn on two-factor authentication and ensure Meta alerts you of unusual logins. Meanwhile, Telegram said its primary login method sends a one-time password to users over SMS. "As a result, this is far less relevant for Telegram users compared to other platforms where the password is always the same," a Telegram spokesperson told BI about the data leak. Apple, GitHub, and Meta did immediately respond to a request for comment on the data leak. Google said it was directing users to some of the security resources above. Building a $25,000 Tech Stock Portfolio That Could Thrive for a Decade
Written by Jitendra Parashar at The Motley Fool Canada If you want to build long-term wealth through tech stocks, the key is to focus on strong fundamentals and stick to the Foolish Investing Philosophy to give your portfolio the time it needs to grow. The tech sector could be volatile in the short term, but over a 10-year horizon, it has the potential to deliver market-beating returns. In this article, I'll highlight two tech stocks to consider today that have the potential to turn your $25,000 investment into something much larger over the next decade. Kinaxis (TSX:KXS) could be a great tech stock for investors planning a portfolio that's built to last. The Ottawa-based software firm focuses on artificial intelligence (AI)-powered supply chain solutions for businesses. The company delivered a solid first-quarter financial performance, with its total sales rising 11% YoY (year over year) to US$132.8 million and adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) jumping 46% to US$33.1 million. That drove its profit margin and earnings per share to record levels. More importantly, Kinaxis reaffirmed its full-year outlook and expects up to US$550 million in total revenue and a healthy adjusted EBITDA margin of up to 25%. Its recurring revenue model also looks strong, with annual recurring revenue climbing 14% to US$372 million in the latest quarter. And with the help of multi-year contracts and high customer retention, the tech company has strong visibility into future cash flow. Moreover, Kinaxis is doubling down on AI features through its Maestro platform and recently partnered with Databricks to bring even more intelligence and speed to enterprise decision-making. That's on top of its new tariff response solution, which aims to help global companies navigate one of the most complex issues in supply chain planning today. KXS stock has climbed nearly 34% over the last year to currently trade at $201.30 per share with a market cap of $5.7 billion. In my opinion, its consistent growth and expanding margins could be rewarding for patient investors willing to hold it over the next decade. (TSXV:TOI) is another tech stock worth considering if you're building a long-term portfolio. The tech firm mainly develops and manages specialized software for niche markets across Europe, supporting sectors like finance, education, and healthcare. In the first quarter this year, its total revenue rose 16% YoY to €355.6 million with the help of 4% organic growth. Similarly, its net quarterly profit climbed to €38.8 million. While the bulk of this growth came from new acquisitions, the tech company's consistent organic performance also signals a stable underlying business. To boost its financial growth prospects, Topicus is actively deploying capital. For example, it recently invested €168 million in Asseco Poland, which could open up new growth opportunities for Topicus. After rallying 48% over the last year, TOI stock is currently trading at $165.03 per share with a market cap of $13.7 billion. With consistent cash flow and a strong acquisition model, Topicus stock could keep compounding value over time, especially for investors focused on the long game.
