ASIA'S beauty industry stands at a pivotal crossroads. It may lead with sustainable innovation or risk falling behind in an increasingly regulated, values-driven market.
The continent is already the world's beauty powerhouse. Total sales are projected to hit US$249 billion by 2028, growing at 4.8 per cent compound annual growth rate and outpacing both North America and Europe. For brands competing in this dynamic region, sustainability is no longer a side project. It's the foundation for future growth and the key to long-term market leadership.
The continued hovering threat of Donald Trump's tariffs has become an unexpected catalyst, accelerating the shift towards regional self-sufficiency and giving sustainability practices a sharper competitive edge. In Asia's fast-growing beauty sector, this moment presents a powerful opportunity.
Consumer imperative
Sustainability for beauty isn't just good ethics – it's good business. This precept is deeply aligned with regional consumer values. Clean beauty in Asia is not a trend, but a reflection of cultural ideals rooted in harmony, balance and respect for nature.
The Chinese concept of 'liang' celebrates natural, effortless radiance, while the Indian Ayurvedic traditions tie physical beauty to internal wellness through herbal rituals and detox practices. These are not surface-level preferences – they reflect a lifestyle and mindset that prioritises well-being, transparency and environmental integrity.
Today's consumers expect products to reflect these values, from ingredient sourcing to ethical manufacturing. These expectations are now reshaping the market. According to Euromonitor, 31 per cent of Asia-Pacific beauty consumers prioritise all-natural ingredients, while 25 per cent demand sourcing transparency.

Clean beauty in Asia extends far beyond formulation – it encompasses packaging, production methods, and waste reduction. Eco-conscious consumers are rewarding brands that reduce plastic use, adopt circular models and disclose their sustainability practices. The results speak for themselves: sustainable beauty products in Asia grew at 9 per cent compound annual growth rate between 2020 and 2023, nearly double the market's average. By 2027, the continent is expected to contribute over half of new sales in such products.
For beauty brands, the message is clear. Sustainability is no longer a differentiator – it is the precursor of entry. Winning in this market means localising not just language, but values.
Asia moves ahead
In the West, sustainability is being met with increasing hesitation. 'Green hushing' has emerged in the US, particularly with the return of Trump-era deregulation, where brands are downplaying sustainability efforts for fear of political or consumer backlash. In Europe, too, brands are treading carefully due to rising scepticism and anti-greenwashing scrutiny.
By contrast, Asia is stepping up. Governments are enacting clear, enforceable sustainability policies – pushing brands towards greener practices:
China has made 'green consumption' part of its national strategy. Its e-commerce platforms must meet green packaging standards, and beauty imports are subject to new cosmetic safety and environmental labelling laws;
India has implemented Extended Producer Responsibility rules for plastic packaging, making companies accountable for collection and recycling;
Japan introduced its Plastic Resource Circulation Act, mandating corporate reporting on plastic usage and requiring eco-friendly product design;
Singapore has launched the Zero Waste Masterplan, offering tax incentives for sustainable packaging and R&D grants for eco-product innovation;
South Korea passed the K-Eco Labeling Act, requiring disclosure of recyclability and pushing refillable product formats. It also banned microplastics in rinse-off cosmetics;
Thailand is banning single-use plastics in phases and offers subsidies for companies switching to biodegradable packaging.
Green growth areas
To seize this moment, brands must think beyond compliance and redesign their business around sustainability. Here are a few ways how leading brands are stepping up their sustainability agenda.
1. Packaging that protects the planet: Lightweight bioplastics and biodegradable materials are the future. Companies like Sulapac in Japan and Veolia in China are leading the charge with innovative packaging alternatives. Even Chanel is getting in the game, using 3D-printed mascara brushes to cut plastic use. Local sourcing will also help brands manage costs while reducing carbon footprints.
2. Smarter manufacturing and supply chains: Eco-consciousness starts behind the scenes. Shiseido's use of AI to forecast demand cut overproduction by 17 per cent – saving US$10 million a year. Blockchain is helping trace ethical ingredient sourcing. Cleaner operations mean fewer resources wasted, lower emissions and leaner operations.
3. Responsible consumption in the digital age: The digital tools that once fuelled hyper-consumerism can now help reverse it. Virtual try-ons reduce product returns, and artificial intelligence-powered recommendations encourage smarter buying. Sephora and Tmall are already using these tools to reduce waste while keeping customers happy.
4. Circular beauty models: Brands such as The Body Shop are normalising refill stations, and AmorePacific's AMORE:CYCLE initiative aims for 100 per cent recycled bottles. Waterless products – like Kao's shampoo sheets – are also gaining ground. These aren't gimmicks; they reflect real shifts in consumer behaviour towards more mindful consumption.
Paying off and futureproofing
Legacy systems, especially in packaging, still rely heavily on plastic. Sustainable materials can be heavier and more expensive. Small beauty players, in particular, may find it hard to scale eco-friendly solutions.
But the payoff is significant: lower long-term costs, loyal consumers and reduced regulatory risk. The shift will require upfront investment but so did e-commerce, and no brand today would trade that back.
Asia's beauty market isn't just large – it's influential. Trends born in Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai often set the pace for the rest of the world. That means what happens here matters globally.
Consumers are sending a clear signal: they want products that are effective, ethical and in harmony with their values. Eco-consciousness, once a niche concern, is now mainstream. Brands that align with this movement – by investing in sustainable sourcing, transparent storytelling and responsible packaging – will thrive.
It's not just about perfection. It's about progress and intention. And in Asia, where cultural values, consumer demand and regulations are converging, the time to be future-proof is now.

Trump's efforts to end the more than three-year conflict in Ukraine have so far yielded few results. The Kremlin said that Putin and Trump did not agree on a time to meet during their phone conversation but that "there is an understanding that a meeting is necessary".

How to invest through Trump's turbulent tariffs for a young investor

[SINGAPORE] China and the United States have agreed to reduce reciprocal tariffs on each other for 90 days and commit to trade talks, a move that has calmed investors fearing a global slowdown. Knowing that, how should you invest differently? Buy stocks, they say – but which ones? Stocks from practically every developed country will benefit. Or buy the US dollar, which investors have fled from since the tariffs? Perhaps sell gold, which investors have lately been turning to for safety? The problem, as you may have already realised, is that unless you had insider knowledge that the tariff pause was going to happen, it's probably too late to do all of these things. The S&P 500 stock market index jumped 3.3 per cent (that's huge for an index) on Monday (May 12), following the tariff pause announcement. The US dollar surged while gold lost 2.7 per cent. Some may say that the news of the tariff pause is 'priced-in'. As regular Joe investors, that's the challenge we often face. We'll often be late if we try to make short-term trading decisions based on the news we read. (Trading bots and professional traders would have reacted before we finished reading the article.) Sign Up Sign Up We're at the stage now where the US tariffs on most countries, including China, have been temporarily lowered. (Additional tariffs on Chinese imports were reduced from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, and the universal 10 per cent tariffs on most countries remain in place.) While financial markets cheered the move, businesses are still unsure of what will happen after the 90 days. So, how should we invest when the future is so uncertain? 🕜 How long is 'long term'? Firstly, don't panic and avoid knee-jerk reactions. One of the golden rules of long-term investing is to stay invested and not panic sell at the first hint of trouble. Your stock investments may rise and fall dramatically from week to week. But zoom out, and you'll see that stocks will rise over the long term. But there's nuance to this truism – I'll touch on two. Firstly, the US stock market often bounces back quickly after a decline. This may take months or a couple of years. Some crashes have taken longer. If you had invested in the S&P 500 index before the dot-com bubble in 2000, your investment wouldn't have grown even after 10 years had passed. Going further back to the Great Depression in the 1930s, the S&P 500 took 15 years to recover. Christopher Tan, chief executive officer of wealth advisory firm Providend, notes that it was during this time that the US enacted the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, now widely blamed for worsening the Great Depression. The Act raised US tariffs on foreign imports by about 20 per cent – sounds familiar? While there's no telling if history will repeat itself, it's important to prepare for the possibility of prolonged drawdowns to our portfolios. And if we can't stomach that, take steps to strike a balance that'll help us sleep well at night. 🧺 What you're invested in matters Secondly, we've so far been talking about the S&P 500, the de facto measure of the US stock market that tracks the performance of the 500 leading companies listed in the US. It's often said that all you need for investments is to buy an S&P 500 index fund, and you're set. While investors who followed this bit of advice have profited greatly, experts have warned that investors who hold only an S&P 500 index fund may not be diversifying their investments enough. While the US market has done well over the past 100 years, there's a growing worry that things will not remain the same in the future, especially given US President Donald Trump's on-again, off-again stance on tariffs. With volatility ahead, many analysts recommend reducing risk to protect your capital. After all, Trump's trade war has only paused, not ended, and the US' 10 per cent tariffs on most foreign goods are still in place. But rather than sell off your investments and wait for things to settle down, consider spreading your funds across different assets and geographies. Diversify by geography: If you're heavily invested in the US stock market, consider adding stocks or index funds from countries as well. Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a fund that tracks a globally diversified index such as the MSCI All-Country World Index or the FTSE All-World Index. An added benefit of diversifying your portfolio beyond the US is that it reduces currency risk. With the recent weakening US dollar, those heavily invested in US stocks may have experienced their portfolios losing value in Singapore-dollar terms. Diversify by assets: If you're heavily invested in stocks, consider adding other asset types into your portfolio that can cushion the volatility in the stock market. Commonly, investors have turned to bonds for this because they tend to do well when stocks do badly. But this hasn't been the case in recent years, such as in 2022 when both stocks and bonds suffered negative returns. Alternatives include gold, which has been the best-performing asset class this year. Gold prices surged more than 20 per cent this year to date, but many analysts believe it can go higher. Gold is often described as a safe haven asset because it is a reliable store of value through times of geopolitical uncertainty and inflation. Central banks around the world have also been buying up gold as they seek to diversify their reserves from the US dollar. Financial advisors typically recommend not holding more than 10 per cent of your portfolio in gold, in the same way you won't want to hold too large a percentage of an individual stock. TL;DR

[BEIJING] A crash in Chinese coal prices, and a flood of clean energy, are cutting power rates in major industrial hubs, easing pressure on some of the factories caught in the crossfire of trade hostilities with the US. In Jiangsu province, the average price for June contracts settled by centralised bidding plunged 24 per cent year on year to 313 yuan (S$56) per megawatt-hour (MWh), the lowest level regulators allow. In Guangdong, the rate dropped 8.3 per cent to the government's floor of 373 yuan per MWh. The two coastal powerhouses are heavily dependent on exports, with a combined economy bigger than that of France. The main driver is a collapse in the price of coal – down 30 per cent over the past year – which accounts for more than half of the electricity generated in China. A shift to market-based pricing, particularly for renewables, is also helping to weaken rates. 'Generation costs are cracking,' said David Fishman, a Shanghai-based principal at consultancy The Lantau Group. 'Coal generators, when they are bidding into the system, they are able to entertain lower prices because all of the generation costs are lower.' Just as economic conditions worsen due to the trade war, Chinese industry is finding relief in the government's drive for energy security. That effort has been most successful in power markets. The country is sitting on a glut of coal that's built up over years and leads the world in its roll-out of wind and solar. Lower power costs are not universal though, because of the way the market is structured. The monthly contract declines apply to only about a quarter of electricity sales, Fishman estimated, with some 70 per cent of transactions decided on a yearly basis. Sign Up Sign Up Still, a lot of annual deals are at least partially tied to monthly or short-term pricing, which will have expanded the number of beneficiaries, Fishman said. 'I would be surprised if there were a lot of power buyers out there just seething, looking at the prices dropping, thinking how come I didn't see that?' he said. Policy shifts Recent policy changes have also pressured electricity prices. The sharp drop in Jiangsu's monthly rate was largely due to the start-up of its spot market in June, said Nannan Kou, head of China research at BloombergNEF. Power generators were keen to lock in buyers ahead of the extra competition from spot traders, and lower coal prices allowed them to offer discounts while still eking out a profit, he said. Most regions in China are expected to have at least trial operations for spot markets, which rely on near instantaneous assessments of supply and demand, by the end of the year. Clean energy is a key pillar of China's embrace of market forces. Starting Jun 1, all renewables generators have to sell their power on the open market, although projects connected to the grid before that date will retain price protections that limit their downside. That creates the incentive to sell electricity without worrying too much about falling prices, said Lantau's Fishman, which could put more pressure on rates and deliver even lower costs to customers.
