Thanks to overtaking Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps and to Max Verstappen's penalty, Nico Hulkenberg has finished P5. What a result for him and Sauber! It's his best result since a P5 at Monza in 2019 with Renault.
Max Verstappen is given a 10-second penalty for that crazy collision with George Russell, dropping him from P5 to P10. That's a huge blow to his championship defense!
A fantastic performance start to finish by Oscar Piastri, who grows his championship lead over his teammate from three points to 10.
Lando Norris follows him in P2 and Charles Leclerc completes the podium in P3.
Lap 66/66
As we being the final lap Piastri's lead over Norris is more than two seconds, he's going to win this race!
Meanwhile, Alonso climbs into P10 and is set to take his first point of the season at his home race.
Lap 64/66
Verstappen comes over the radio to say that Leclerc has to give him the position, which Nico Rosberg calls "rubbish" on the Sky Sports broadcast.
Verstappen is then told by his engineer that he has to give P4 to Russell following their collision. He angrily responds that he shouldn't have to, and he has a point. But then! He appears to give Russell the position, before seemingly changing his mind and driving straight into Russell! What chaos!
Meanwhile, Hamilton is passed by Hulkenberg for P6!
Lap 63/66
Piastri leads his teammate by 1.4 seconds.
Replays show that Verstappen had a massive snap coming off the final corner before the straight as the race restarted. Any contact between him and Leclerc came after the Ferrari driver had overtaken him, nothing to worry about there for Leclerc. Following that, Russell banged tires with Verstappen, forcing the Dutchman to take to the escape road.
Mercedes reported that it was a power unit issue for Antonelli, after the rookie driver experienced "a loss of oil pressure."
Lap 61/66
Piastri runs down the road and successfully holds off Norris! Meanwhile, Verstappen on his hard tires is immediately overtaken by Leclerc! He complains over the radio that Leclerc rammed him down the straight.
Lap 60/66
The safety car is coming in at the end of this lap. Here we go!
Lap 60/66
What an opportunity this is for Norris. He had reduced Piastri's lead to approximately 3.5 seconds prior to the safety car, but it was hard to imagine him both catching and overtaking his teammate in the remaining laps. Now, he'll be right behind him as we restart the race.
The backmarkers have been let by, we should be resuming action shortly!
Lap 58/66
We're still driving behind the full safety car. Sky Sports reports that this is the latest safety car in the history of this race. What a conclusion we're set for here! Verstappen being forced to take a hard tire is a consequence of this aggressive strategy run by Red Bull, using up the medium and soft sets available. Verstappen could have stayed out, but he'd have struggled on worn tires against the McLarens on the softs.
Lap 56/66
The leaders all pit under the safety car. McLaren do really well to double stack and maintain Norris' lead over Verstappen.
Verstappen is switched to a set of hard tires, which perplexes him. He comes over the radio to ask why that was the choice taken, "Why the f— are we... what is this tire? Why are we on a hard?" He's told that was the only option. The Athletic
Lap 55/66
Well now! This is really going to introduce some chaos now! Antonelli is forced to stop and shut his car down, prompting a full safety car.
We're set for a thrilling conclusion!
Lap 55/66
As we approach the closing laps, Piastri leads Norris by 3.5 seconds, and he in turn leads Verstappen by 2.5 seconds.
Verstappen really not happy on the radio there about the traffic! This is going to be what stymies the leaders in the closing stages. With such close margins, it could be decisive if one of them hits traffic at the wrong point.
Lap 52/66
Norris and Verstappen approach backmarkers just as Bearman and Lawson are having a battle. They both lose out on time as the drivers further down the order get in their way. Verstappen waves his hand at Bearman in frustration before coming over the radio to call them "F---ing idiots!"
Lap 51/66
We should be done with pit stops now. Piastri Norris Verstappen Leclerc Russell Hamilton Antonelli Hadjar Hulkenberg Gasly Bearman Lawson Alonso Sainz Tsunoda Ocon Bortoleto Colapinto
Out: Albon

Schwarzenegger tells environmentalists dismayed by Trump to 'stop whining' and get to work

VIENNA (AP) — Arnold Schwarzenegger has a message for environmentalists who despair at the the approach of President Donald Trump's administration: 'Stop whining and get to work.' The new U.S. administration has taken an ax to Biden-era environmental ambitions, rolled back landmark regulations, withdrawn climate project funding and instead bolstered support for oil and gas production in the name of an 'American energy dominance' agenda. Schwarzenegger, the former Republican governor of California, has devoted time to environmental causes since leaving political office in 2011. He said Tuesday he keeps hearing from environmentalists and policy experts lately who ask, 'What is the point of fighting for a clean environment when the government of the United States says climate change is a hoax and coal and oil is the future?' Schwarzenegger told the Austrian World Summit in Vienna, an event he helps organize, that he responds: 'Stop whining and get to work.' He pointed to examples of local and regional governments and companies taking action, including his own administration in California, and argued 70% of pollution is reduced at the local or state level. 'Be the mayor that makes buses electric; be the CEO who ends fossil fuel dependence; be the school that puts (up) solar roofs,' he said. 'You can't just sit around and make excuses because one guy in a very nice White House on Pennsylvania Avenue doesn't agree with you,' he said, adding that attacking the president is 'not my style' and he doesn't criticize any president when outside the U.S. 'I know that the people are sick and tired of the whining and the complaining and the doom and gloom,' Schwarzenegger said. 'The only way we win the people's hearts and minds is by showing them action that makes their lives better.'

If you're returning, welcome back. It's the French Open second week on The Athletic , aaaaand it's live! A few years ago, it would be hard to imagine Elena Rybakina and Iga Świątek meeting in the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam. But that's where we are in the fourth round this year at Roland Garros, with Rybakina the 12th seed and Świątek the fifth seed. This will be their ninth meeting, with the career head-to-head 4-4. Rybakina is 2-0 on clay against Świątek. She is one of the few players who has the serve and the return game to overpower Świątek. Świątek hasn't lost at Roland Garros since 2021. Will her winning streak continue in Paris or will Rybakina knock out the three-time defending French Open champ? One of the matches of the day to kick off the fourth round at the French Open is Ben Shelton taking on defending Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz is 2-0 against Shelton but both of their meetings came on hard court at the Laver Cup and the Canadian Open. This will be their first clay court meeting. Shelton won a five-set battle against Lorenzo Sonego in the first round before not dropping a set against Matteo Gigante in the third following a walkover. Alcaraz has only dropped one set this tournament... in the second round against Fábián Marozsán. With both players loving to hit highlight-reel shots, it promises to be an entertaining match. After a sweltering Saturday that got up to 29.4 degrees Celsius (85 F), Sunday's forecast is much more reasonable at Roland Garros. Per AccuWeather, the forecast is cloudy and 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 F) with no precipitation in sight. Should be a great day of tennis in Paris. Below are the men's singles Round of 16 matches: L. ‘Spectacular' but ‘harmless' Mount Etna eruption sends tourists scrambling

Spectacular clouds of ashy smoke filled the sky above Sicily in southern Italy after Mount Etna erupted, sending some tourists scrambling down the volcano — though authorities said there was no safety risk. Around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, surveillance cameras captured a pyroclastic flow — defined by the U.S. Geological Survey as a 'chaotic mixture of rock fragments, gas, and ash' that travels quickly and is typically hotter than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit — around Etna's southeast crater, according to the volcanic monitoring team of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. The eruption was probably caused by 'the collapse of material from the northern flank' of Etna's southeast crater, INGV Vulcani said. It caused lava to flow in three directions — south, east and north — and left behind a fine layer of 'reddish material' that was carried away by winds and dispersed over cities west and northwest of Etna, the institute said. The eruption briefly sparked air travel warnings, with the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Toulouse, France, issuing a red alert for 'strong Strombolian activity' at Etna on Monday morning and Catania Airport in Sicily raising its level of alert, according to the Associated Press. The eruption was brief: INGV Vulcani said it had ended by 8:20 p.m. local time. Though the smoke, ash and lava combined to form an ominous picture, the lava flows did not breach a natural containment area 'and posed no danger to the population,' Sicilian President Renato Schifani said, according to the AP. The main area of danger was at Etna's summit, which was closed to visitors at the time for safety, the AP reported, citing Stefano Branca, an INGV official in Catania. Videos posted online showed people running and scrambling down the flank of Etna with the ash clouds in the background — though some instead appeared to get closer to take photos. Etna is a popular hiking destination for tourists visiting the island of Sicily. Etna is Europe's most active volcano, and Monday was its 14th eruptive episode in less than three months. It was 'spectacular' but 'harmless,' Boris Behncke, a volcanologist at the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology's Etna Observatory, wrote on X. Because it was seen by so many people — including visitors who were on the volcano at the time, though far from the eruption zone — it could become 'one of the most famous pyroclastic flows of our time,' he added.
