Roosters' stance on Daly Cherry-Evans unchanged
The Sydney Roosters remain keen on pursuing Daly Cherry-Evans despite his axing from the State of Origin set-up and the emergence of their own young halves.
It comes as coach Trent Robinson reveals all five of his State of Origin representatives will back up for Saturday's match against North Queensland, who are resting Reuben Cotter and Reece Robson.
The Roosters shaped as the front-runners for Cherry-Evans's signature after the premiership-winning halfback confirmed 2025 would be his 15th and final season at Manly.
Since then, Cherry-Evans has been dropped as Queensland captain and endured patchy form for an out-of-sorts Manly side fighting to keep pace with the top eight.
The Roosters, meanwhile, have unearthed an out-and-out first-grader in rookie halfback Hugo Savala and also have highly rated Sam Walker signed through 2027.
Sandon Smith has proven a capable back-up playmaker too, particularly impressive in a big Anzac Day win over St George Illawarra.
The Roosters have held preliminary talks with Cherry-Evans but the 36-year-old has indicated his immediate focus is on the 2025 season, not finalising his future.
Robinson previously endorsed the club's pursuit of Cherry-Evans and has not changed his position amid the events of recent months.
"Nothing has moved, we haven't had any discussions or anything like that. But there hasn't been any difference on what I said last time either," he said.
"We said he's going to wait so we've just been getting on with our business until that time."
Cherry-Evans has been instrumental in big wins over Penrith and Brisbane in recent months but most recently struggled to ignite the side in a 28-8 thrashing from last-placed Gold Coast.
Robinson has been unconcerned over public commentary surrounding Cherry-Evans's form this season.
"That hasn't been a discussion for us," he said.
The coach sees a world where all four of Cherry-Evans, Savala, Walker and Smith can co-exist at the club next season.
Savala's preferred position is in the halves but his 194cm frame makes him a candidate for opportunities in the back row or outside backs.
Smith, meanwhile, was a regular on the bench before five-eighth Luke Keary left the club in the most recent off-season.
"We're in a good spot, I feel like we're developing really well," Robinson said.
"We want to keep pushing forward in being the best team that we can be. There's no wavering on what I said (about wanting to pursue Cherry-Evans) but that time will come."
The Cowboys will have Queensland duo Jeremiah Nanai and Tom Dearden on deck as they fight to bounce back from their 58-4 hiding at the hands of the Dolphins last week.
But NSW hooker Robson and Maroons forward Cotter will be given extra time to rest following the Maroons' 26-24 game-two win on Wednesday.
"(They're) just carrying a couple of niggles that we don't want to make worse, given that we've got a long road ahead," said coach Todd Payten.

Mullins dreaming of Melbourne Cup again after Royal Ascot win
By James Toney at Royal Ascot Willie Mullins is a man with a plan and when he sets his sights on a target, he normally hits the bullseye. Mullins has made no secret of his ambition to win the Melbourne Cup, the world's richest handicap, and thinks he's got a live chance for Flemington this year. He thought one-time Triumph Hurdle winner Vauban was 'the one' for 'The Cup' but he came home a distant 14th when favourite two years ago and only improved that position by three last November. Absurde got Mullins closer with a top five finish last year, just a couple of lengths behind winner Knight's House and his owners will be hoping Royal Ascot winner Ethical Diamond can do even better. York's Lonsdale Cup now appears the likely target in August with Mullins hoping all road will then lead back Down Under. "We will give him a little break and look at York – that is normally where we go from here," he said. "The Ebor would look possible too but we would love to go to Melbourne. If we can get him qualified, that would be wonderful, I think he'd really suit that race. "It's probably the biggest flat race in the world that I can win with the type of horses we buy and that's why it's a race that we'd really love to win. We've keep coming back and trying to win it but you've got to have the right horses, so let's see." It's over two decades since Mullins's first crack at the 'race that stops a nation', with a second, third and fourth on his resume, including Max Dynamite's lucky runner-up position ten years ago. "The trip and ground will certainly suit him," said Donnacha O'Brien. "He's put together two good runs this season and we're hopeful he'll run a big race." Five different Irish trainers have been in the winners' enclosure this week and Festival winning trainer John McConnell fires a long shot in the Wokingham Stakes, with 2022 Jersey Stakes winner Noble Truth. The Kingman-colt has been lightly-raced since and has gained a wild child reputation, with Luke Morris the brave man in today's saddle. A high draw on the straight track at Ascot has been favoured this week and Noble Truth will leave from gate 31 at a huge price.

No Origin stars, no worries; Panthers in boilover win
An undermanned Penrith have secured a critical 28-18 victory over the high-flying Warriors despite missing their swag of State of Origin stars. The Panthers arrived in Auckland without five stars including Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo due to the travel factor from Origin II in Perth to New Zealand. But the rookie outfit shocked the third-ranked hosts in their Saturday clash to bank a third straight win and continue their climb up the NRL ladder. Depending on results the defending premiers could finish inside the top eight at the end of the round for the first time since Las Vegas in the opening round. Winning seven of their past eight matches, the Warriors were expected to outclass Penrith but the Panthers' young halves Blaize Talagi and Brad Schneider stood up to steer the visitors home. Feeney dominates Darwin to hit four straight race wins
Broc Feeney has continued his dominance at Hidden Valley Raceway, winning back-to-back races from pole in Darwin to extend his lead at the top of the Supercars standings. The Triple Eight speedster seems unstoppable at the moment. With his third and fourth consecutive race wins on Saturday, his championship gap over teammate Will Brown has opened up to 143 points. In a controlled performance in the day's second race, Feeney held onto the lead from the jump, setting a new Darwin lap record of one minute 7.523 seconds in the process. After pitting last, the 22-year-old used his fresh supersoft tyres to speed away from Anton De Pasquale in the final laps and hold onto a one second lead. De Pasquale's second-place finish was his first podium of the season and Grove Racing rookie Kai Allen picked up his first career podium in third. But Grove could be in for a team penalty after one of his crew members dropped a tyre in pit lane, sparking a post-race investigation from the stewards. De Pasquale and Allen both slipped behind Brodie Kostecki and Matt Payne after pitting later, but jumped back into the top three with fresher tyres. Cam Waters, who started in third, lacked pace and slipped back through the pack before an off on turn one with two laps to go sent him back to 10th. Brown recovered 10 places to finish in seventh after starting in 17th. Feeney's two wins continued his love affair with Hidden Valley, including winning both races in 2024 and another the year earlier. He earlier held off Tickford's Waters to win race 17 as carnage unfolded behind. It took just one turn for the first big shunt of the race to bring out the safety car. Wheel contact from James Golding fired Jaxon Evans into the barrier at the exit of turn one at high speed, dislodging his front wheel and ruling his car out of the rest of the day's action.
