SRINAGAR: Political parties in Kashmir, including the governing National Conference, condemned Israel's attack on Iran on Friday, saying 'the silence of influential countries like the US on this issue is alarming'.
J&K CM Omar Abdullah said Iran had not provoked Israel in any manner to justify its offensive and this amounted to waging war against another nation. 'What Israel has done is very similar to what Russia did in Ukraine,' he told reporters here.
'The world raised its voice against Russia and launched campaigns condemning its actions. But when Israel attacks Iran, global powers, including the US and European countries, remain silent.
If it is wrong for one country to invade another in Russia's case, then it is equally unjustified for Israel to attack Iran,' he said.
Omar said there would be immediate repercussions of the attack. 'It affects our fuel prices, impacts the stock market, disrupts flight routes to the West, and more importantly, it stirs public sentiment.'
Slamming Israel, NC MP Aga Ruhullah said: 'Iran, like any sovereign nation, now has every right to defend itself and take full, punishing revenge.

The Zionist regime should pay for its crimes in Gaza, for its bloodlust, for its massacres.'
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti wrote on X that Israel's attack is yet another brazen act by a state that 'appears to have gone rogue'. 'The silence of the global community, particularly western powers led by the United States, is both alarming and telling. This silence amounts to tacit approval. In the case of India-Pakistan tensions, the US never fails to assert that its intervention has been crucial in preventing escalation.
Yet, when it comes to Israel's relentless bombardment of Gaza or its latest strike on Iran, that same urgency is conspicuously missing,' Mehbooba said.
She said equally disturbing is the 'deafening silence of the so-called Muslim countries, who remain shamelessly non-existent in the face of such grave injustice'.
People's Conference's Imran Reza Ansari said the 'calculated act of aggression of Israel is not merely a political provocation but an assault on the very ideals of justice, sovereignty, and intellectual resistance'.

Days after communal tensions, 38 arrested in overnight crackdown across Assam's Dhubri

Thirty-eight people were arrested in an overnight crackdown in Western Assam's Dhubri town after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's visit there on Friday, days after communal tensions gripped the town in the days following Eid-al Adha. After communal tensions had gripped the town on June 8 and 9 following the discovery of suspected cattle remains from a temple in the town, a total of 22 people had been arrested. According to district police, a total of five FIRs had been registered in connection with three different matters related to the developments in the town — the alleged slaughter of a cow and leaving the remains in the temple, rioting in the town, and the spread of misinformation and rumours. The charges in these FIRs include sections of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act and provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to defiling a place of worship, acts intended to outrage religious feelings, criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt and promoting enmity between different groups. However, following the Chief Minister's visit, 38 more people were arrested by the district police, this time from various locations across the district. 'We are still investigating and making arrests in connection with the incidents that took place earlier, but there is also a crackdown on criminal elements across the districts, which is an ongoing operation,' said Additional SP Dhubri Dipjyoti Talukdar. During his visit to Dhubri Friday, Sarma had said that police have been ordered to arrest 'all criminals in Dhubri' including people with non-bailable warrants against them and a criminal history. He had also stated that he would issue night-time 'shoot at sight orders' against law-and-order disruptors in the town. However, the Additional SP Saturday declined to comment on whether formal orders to that effect have been received by the district police. Another major move the state government made after his visit was a shuffle in police officials by bringing in APS officer Leena Doley – who had been posted in Hailakandi – as SSP Dhubri. While Dhubri is a Muslim-majority district located along the state's border with Bangladesh, the town itself has a mixed population. Dhubri Municipal Board Chairman and BJP leader Debamoy Sanyal said that matters in the town had been calming down after the flare-up Sunday and Monday. 'Everything started when a cow head was found in the Hanuman mandir in ward 3 of the town Sunday. That day, we went there, and so the police, district administration, and local Muslims and leaders as well, and we all had discussions till late in the evening and calmed down sentiments. But the next day, again some remains were found in the same campus despite police presence and that really instigated people,' he said. The town had witnessed clashes, including stone pelting, and the district administration had Monday imposed prohibitory orders ordering the closure of shops and markets, and prohibiting the assembly of more than five people and assemblies and rallies. However, these orders were withdrawn Tuesday afternoon, with DC Dibakar Nath saying that the situation had come back under control. However, there were still some reports of groups pelting stones at each other at night the next night. 'The people have been cooperative and peace committees have been having discussions. Everything is okay, except some instances of stone pelting at night. Despite its mixed population and instances of communal tensions in the past, these have never carried on for more than one or two days. This time it escalated, and the effect of developments in Bangladesh cannot be ruled out. Now there are lots of police forces and it will take some time for everything to get settled,' he said. During his visit, Sarma had connected the tensions in the town to 'external forces' and a communal group working to cause unrest in the town. The local MLA, Nazrul Hoque, from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) alleged that the chief minister's stern directives were disproportionate to the situation on the ground. 'I have condemned the CM saying that shoot-at-sight orders will be issued in the town because things have not come to that. Things in the town are peaceful now. What is required is a proper investigation into what exactly happened and identifying the exact culprits who have been creating unrest in the town. So far all the people arrested have been Muslims, even though stone pelting has happened from both sides,' he said. In the meantime, Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi said that the Congress supports stern measures, including shoot-at-sight orders to deal with communal forces. However, he pointed towards alleged 'agent provocateurs' within the BJP, accusing CM Sarma of 'circulating a two-religion theory' in Assam. 'In Assam, after Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the BJP, he has been spreading communal statements and actions and has been doing politics to divide the state… So now these incidents happen, during Durga Puja, during Eid, somewhere or the other, there will be some incident with cow meat or something else to keep the communal pot boiling,' he said in a press conference on Saturday. He further said: 'There have also been instances in states with BJP governments that when people have been caught in connection with such cases, they have been found to be connected to some organisation or branch connected with the BJP. Because of these things, we can't help but have doubts. That's why we appeal that since they have the police and all the central government's intelligence agencies, they should identify these communal forces and punish them accordingly'.

Flying suitcases packed with Hard Drives to China, taking hundreds of servers on rent and ...: How Chinese AI companies dodge US chip ban

(AI image) In a bid to bypass stringent U.S. restrictions on advanced AI chips, Chinese companies are resorting to innovative workarounds, including processing data abroad. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, in early March, four Chinese engineers traveled from Beijing to Malaysia, each carrying a suitcase with 15 hard drives containing 80 terabytes of data for training an AI model. At a Malaysian data center, the engineers utilized approximately 300 servers equipped with Nvidia's advanced chips to develop the AI model, which they later brought back to China. Smuggling AI hardware Since 2022, the U.S. has tightened export controls on high-end AI chips to China, citing national security concerns. According to WSJ report, these restrictions have limited Chinese firms' access to cutting-edge American technology, prompting them to explore alternatives. Some have substituted domestic chips for American ones, while others have smuggled AI hardware through third countries. However, increased U.S. pressure has made smuggling more challenging, pushing Chinese companies to process data outside China in regions like Southeast Asia and the Middle East. 'This was something we were consistently concerned about,' said Thea Kendler, former head of export controls at the Commerce Department under the Biden administration, referring to Chinese firms' remote access to U.S. AI chips, told WSJ. The process involves layers of intermediaries, obscuring whether U.S. regulations are being violated. The Biden administration proposed country-specific caps on American chip purchases to curb such activities, but the Trump administration scrapped these in May, citing unnecessary regulatory burdens on U.S. companies like Nvidia. Instead, it issued guidance urging firms to prevent their chips from being used to train Chinese AI models. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo How and why China uses countries in Southeast Asia as base In Malaysia, the Chinese company's operation required meticulous planning. Engineers reportedly spent over eight weeks optimizing data sets in China, as transferring large data volumes online could take months. Last July, the company worked through a Singaporean subsidiary but later registered a Malaysian entity to avoid scrutiny after Nvidia and its vendors intensified end-user audits. To evade suspicion at Malaysian customs, the engineers distributed hard drives across four suitcases, a shift from bundling them into one the previous year. They returned to China with several hundred gigabytes of model parameters guiding the AI system's output. Southeast Asia is reported to be emerging as a hub for such activities, with data centers rapidly expanding. Jones Lang LaSalle estimates nearly 2,000 megawatts of data-center capacity in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia -- matching Europe's largest markets. Malaysia's AI chip imports from Taiwan surged to $3.4 billion in March and April, exceeding its 2024 total. Meanwhile, the Middle East is also becoming a destination for Chinese AI developers, with Nvidia recently announcing significant chip sales to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. These maneuvers highlight the challenges of enforcing U.S. export controls as Chinese companies exploit global data centers to access American technology. While Southeast Asian authorities, like Singapore's, are cracking down on transshipments, the region's booming infrastructure continues to attract both Western and Chinese clients, testing the limits of regulatory oversight.
