Marietta named America's Most Generous City by GoFundMe

According to the fundraising platform, more than 25,000 Marietta residents made donations on GoFundMe in 2024.
To celebrate the national recognition, the city and GoFundMe will host a special event on May 30 during the Glover Park Concert Series at Marietta Square.
MARIETTA, Ga. - When it comes to giving back, one city in metro Atlanta has opened their hearts and wallets more than any other in the country.
GoFundMe has named Marietta as America's Most Generous City in 2024.

This is the third time Marietta has earned the title since 2019. The city also ranked second among the most generous cities of all time.
According to the fundraising platform, more than 25,000 Marietta residents made donations on GoFundMe in 2024.
Since 2010, residents have donated more than $13 million to help others. One person has donated more than 160 times over the last 15 years.

Alpharetta and Sandy Springs were both named the fifth and seventh most generous respectively.
Taking second place for 2024 was Sarasota, Florida.

To celebrate the national recognition, the city and GoFundMe will host a special event on May 30 during the Glover Park Concert Series at Marietta Square.
The celebration will feature a performance by Canyonland featuring Michelle Malone and will include giveaways, a photo booth, and interactive activities for attendees.
The concert and celebration are free and open to the public.

‘I'm not going anywhere': Baton Rouge man survives shooting while improving his community
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — One man is recovering from his injuries after someone shot him in broad daylight. Robert McKey was renovating a home for the Mid-City Redevelopment Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Mid-City. But he didn't think his passion for the community would land him in the hospital. 'I'm not going anywhere. I got shot in the face and spit out a bullet, nothing is going to take me from you,' said Robert McKey to his mother. On May 14, McKey was fixing a fence with his stepdad and friend on North 24th Street in Baton Rouge. 'It was a completely senseless act of violence,' said McKey. McKey said he was only trying to better his community that day, but the unthinkable happened while he was working. McKey said two men approached them, and one was wearing a mask. They reportedly asked McKey for cash, but he said he didn't have any. Guns were then drawn. 3 separate shootings leave multiple injured across Baton Rouge Wednesday 'I feel the tip of the AR-15 in the back of my head and he said, 'Don't move, I'm going to blow your brains out,'' said McKey. Yet, McKey moved and tried to grab the gun from the man. 'He emptied the clip when I was wrestling back and forth and whenever they ran out of bullets, the next thing I knew it felt like my head was a pinball machine. I was like, 'Did I just spit out a bullet?' I was like no way; there's no way like be real. I walked inside and my stepdad is trying to call 911,' said McKey. Bullets also hit his forearm, chest, neck, abdomen, and more. McKey's friend was also hit, and his stepdad was grazed. 'After they ran out of bullets they took off running, they weren't at all expecting me to do what I did, and they left in fear,' said Mckey. McKey is now out of the hospital, but the road to recovery will be a long one. 'They didn't take anything from us. They took my ability to build that fence, which I love, my job, and they took my ability to teach all these youth. They took that from them,' said McKey. McKey said he would go back to mentoring young kids in the area. The incident will not stop him from making Mid-City a better place to live. 'I am going back, I am definitely going back,' said McKey. Mom Dies Unexpectedly Outside of Daughter's High School Graduation: 'I Watched Her Take Her Last Breath'
A mother in North Carolina collapsed and died while walking through the parking lot before her daughter's high school graduation last week Jean Byrd is being remembered by loved ones as the "most caring person you will ever" meet The family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to "make sure she gets her last wishes" of being buried by her father in Pennsylvania A mother unexpectedly collapsed and died in a parking lot moments before her daughter's high school graduation in North Carolina. On May 23, Jean Byrd was at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C., ahead of her daughter Meilean's graduation when she died "just 200 feet" from the ceremony, her family wrote in a GoFundMe campaign description and told local NBC affiliate WXII. Marquan Matthews — Byrd's son, who was inside the venue at the time — recalled getting a phone call from his aunt about the incident, before a security guard drove him in a golf cart to the parking lot, WXII reported. He then performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Byrd died of cardiac arrest, according to the GoFundMe description, which was written by her son. "This was a curse," Matthews told WXII. "This was a curse because I sat there and watched my mom's soul lift out of her. I watched her take her last breath." "So it was very hard for me, and it's still hard for me to this day because I barely get any sleep," he added. "I just see them last few moments of my mom, just being gone." Meilean, who walked across the stage and earned her diploma from Parkland High School shortly after, had no idea what was happening at the time, per WXII. A guidance counselor was waiting for her and told her that her mother "had an accident," before Meilean was escorted out and to the hospital, the graduate told the outlet. "I thought it was like a car accident, so I wasn't really scared," Meilean said through tears as family consoled her. Three days before Meilean's high school graduation, and Byrd's death, her youngest son, Marsuan, attended his eighth-grade graduation ceremony. Matthews wrote on the GoFundMe page that his mother "had the honor of seeing him" walk across the stage at the event. He launched the family's fundraising campaign in an effort to "make sure she gets her last wishes" of being buried by her father and other family in Pennsylvania. As the son wrote, his mother — who was known as "Ma Dukes" — "shared a lot of infectious love through many years, touching the souls of the lost and being a saint to many who needed it." "We never thought that on this day, a day filled of joy, would be the worst day of our lives," Matthews continued. "As my sister was graduating high school, our mother is lying on the ground fighting for her life. As my sister is walking across the stage, I'm doing CPR on my mother. She died an hour later on my sister's graduation." Byrd, who was a "fighter," according to her son, had "a constant battle with heart issues" and previously suffered "two heart attacks." "She was so resilient and such a warrior, fighting for all her kids no matter how much pain and suffering she was in," Matthews wrote. "No matter what our mother went through, she always stayed positive and figured out a way. No matter how bad my mom was hurting, she still made people smile and feel at home in their hearts with every person who crossed paths with her." "I think she is only around 2-3 weeks old. I'm just feeling really overwhelmed and sad at the same time. I wish the world wasn't so cruel especially to something so small and innocent. I just want to give her a fighting chance," she writes in the post. Erin told Newsweek that because neither her mom or her sister could care for the kitten, now known as Miso, she took her home herself, even though she didn't have any previous experience caring for kittens, especially injured ones. I was a crying mess because we suddenly had this injured kitty and we had zero clue how to make her better. Reddit told me to take her to the emergency vet and to make a GoFundMe to help pay for her expenses so I did," she said. "The emergency vet said that the injury on her chin was possibly from rolling on the asphalt and it was called a degloving injury. Basically she has no skin where her chin is. They did a surgery on her chin to try to reattach the skin but Miso pulled her stitches out so my family vet has to do another surgery on her to reattach it." She's always on the move and she has such a quirky and spunky personality," Erin said. "We have an other dog, Aspen who has really taken to caring for her. He doesn't get along with most other animals but I think he instinctively knows that she needs someone to take care of her." Out in the wild, the odds are poor for cats.
