India should play Kuldeep Yadav in second Test: Monty Panesar
NEW DELHI: Former England spinner Monty anesar believes it's time for India to unleash Kuldeep Yadav at the expense of seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur in the second Test in Birmingham where spin is likely to play a bigger role.
India lost the first Test on Tuesday at Leeds as the hosts chased down a stiff 371 on the final day courtesy a brilliant 149 by opener Ben Duckett.
"At Edgbaston, India could probably play (Ravindra) Jadeja and could actually go for the X-factor spinner in Kuldeep Yadav...we know that the Edgbaston wicket does turn a little bit. So you have that bit of an X-factor, which I think would be a better option. There's something about him," Panesar told PTI Videos.
Panesar, who played a pivotal role in England's last Test series win in India (2012), feels the numbers are strongly in Kuldeep's favour.
The left-arm wrist-spinner has taken 56 wickets in just 13 Tests at an average of 22.16.
Thakur, in comparison, has 33 wickets in 12 Tests at a costlier average of 29.36 and a strike rate of 46.8.
"He doesn't need turning tracks. This IPL showed that even without exaggerated turn, he can bowl tough lines that make life difficult for batters," he added.
Thakur bowled just 16 overs and took two wickets giving away 89 runs in the first Test at Leeds and failed to make a meaningful impact with the bat, raising questions about his all-round value on English pitches that are no longer seaming as much.
"If Shardul Thakur is only going to bowl six to eight overs and not give you 15 overs in the day, there's no point in playing him," Panesar pointed out.
Pressed on whether India should pick Kuldeep instead of Jadeja, Panesar didn't hesitate.
"I think they need to play Kuldeep because he has more of an X factor. There's something about him. Jadeja bowls too quickly. So I think, yeah, they need to bring in Kuldeep Yadav instead of Jadeja. He becomes the main attacking option," he said.
But Panesar acknowledged India may hesitate to play only one spinner, especially given Jadeja's ability to contain runs.
"I just think India won't go with that. Because India likes a defensive spinner. And they can then use Kuldeep. Because Kuldeep can't defend. He only attacks. So if he goes the distance, then they're in deep trouble," he said.
"So I think they will probably play two spinners. Jadeja can then be the defensive guy. And then Kuldeep will be the attacking guy," added Panesar who represented England in 50 Tests, 26 ODIs and 1 T20I.

Nasser also called out the captain and the seniors players in the team for not talking to Ravindra Jadeja who was attacked by English batters in the fourth innings with reverse sweeps which the Indian team had no answers for. The commentator also criticized Jadeja for not exploiting the rough made on the fifth day pitch. "A word with Jadeja, maybe as a young captain, to go to such an experienced spinner, and go, you do know the rough is out there. Ravi Shastri and Mark Butcher are up there, going, show us where that ball is pitching, and it was pitching nowhere near the rough. Ravi was saying, a bit slow, a bit wide, bowl in the rough. I was surprised that not one of the senior players or captains went to Jadeja and said, Can we go a little bit wider. But Ravi's right, they lost the game for two things that he couldn't control," he added. The second test between the two teams will be played from July 2nd at Edgbaston, Birmingham. India would like to fix their mistakes and level the series going forward. Shubman who became the 37th Test captain of India joined the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and KL rahul as the Indian captains to lose their first test as captain.

Kuldeep for Shardul could be the only change at Edgbaston as India eye parity

Following England's record chase of 371 at Headingley, Gambhir was asked about Shardul's under-utilisation and he understandably came in support of the captain. "Sometimes captain goes with his instincts and Ravindra Jadeja gave us control in the first innings, that was important and we could rotate our three pacers at the other end. "We know what is Shardul's quality and that is why he is playing for India and is in the dressing room. Just because he is the fourth seamer does not necessarily mean that he has to be brought ahead of a spinner. A captain went by his instinct and depending on surface, we were playing," said changes in the bowling line-up are unlikely with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah expected to play with a long enough gap between the first and the second Test. Uncapped Arshdeep Singh is likely to warm the bench again with the management expected to persist with Prasidh, who bowled much better and fuller in the second essay and Mohammed Siraj, who is not able to extract a lot out of his stock wobbled seam delivery of late.
