Russia says against Iran suspending IAEA cooperation
MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday spoke out against Moscow's key ally Iran suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), after Iranian lawmakers voted in favor of halting work with the UN nuclear agency.'We are interested in continuing cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, so that everybody respects Iran's repeated statements that Iran does not have and will not have plans to develop a nuclear weapon,' Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow.The decision by Iranian lawmakers, taken after a 12-day war that saw Israeli and US strikes on nuclear sites, still requires the approval of Iran's Guardian Council, a body empowered to vet legislation.Lavrov said the decision was of 'an advisory nature' to Iran's executive branch.Moscow provides crucial backing for Tehran but did not swing forcefully behind its partner even as the United States launched strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities over the weekend.Russia and Iran signed a milestone strategic agreement earlier this year, but it does provide for mutual assistance in the case of aggression.Iran is Russia's second close ally to come under pressure in the Middle East in recent months, after Bashar Assad's regime in Syria was toppled last December.It could be a sign that Russia's influence in the region is waning, as Moscow has to relocate resources and divert attention to its Ukraine offensive, according to Nikita Smagin, an independent expert on Russia-Iran relations.Russia 'is potentially losing its status as a superpower, at least as it perceived in the Middle East,' he told AFP, adding that 'its allies are being simply knocked out of the game, one after another.'

Ukraine, Russia exchange another group of POWs
Ukraine and Russia exchanged a new group of captured soldiers on Thursday, the latest in a series of prisoner swaps agreed at peace talks in Istanbul earlier this month. Neither side said how many prisoners were released in the latest exchange. The two countries pledged to swap at least 1,000 soldiers each during their direct meeting in Istanbul on June 2, but no follow-up talks have been scheduled. The return of prisoners of war and the repatriation of war dead have been among the few areas of cooperation between the warring sides since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. 'Today, warriors of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service are returning home,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media. He shared images of Ukrainian soldiers draped in blue-and-yellow national flags, smiling and tearfully embracing. 'The vast majority of the defenders released today had been held captive for more than three years,' Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said. 'Many of them were captured during the defense of Mariupol,' it added. The grueling siege of Mariupol at the start of Russia's 2022 offensive is seen one of the most brutal battles of the conflict. Russia said its soldiers had been transferred to Belarus and were receiving 'psychological and medical care.' 'Another group of Russian servicemen has been returned from territory controlled by the Kyiv regime,' the defense ministry said in a statement. It posted a video showing freed Russian soldiers draped in their national flag, chanting 'Russia, Russia, Russia!'

Venezuelan president sends message to King Salman, affirming ties
RIYADH: President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro has written to King Salman regarding the relationship between Riyadh and Caracas and ways in which it could be strengthened. The written communication was handed to Dr. Abdulrahman bin Ibrahim Al-Rassi, undersecretary for multilateral international affairs at the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by David Velasquez Caraballo, the Venezuelan ambassador to Riyadh, on Thursday. Al-Rassi is also supervisor general of the Public Diplomacy Agency at the Foreign Ministry. During their meeting, he and Caraballo discussed ways of enhancing bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, as well as other topics of mutual interest.
