Ann Stephen McDonagh's magnifying glass sent her husband's papers alight

She has warned shoppers to be aware of the need to keep the device out of sunlight
Ann Stephen McDonagh took to Facebook to tell how the Aldi product set her husband's work alight.
She had purchased a Table Stand Magnifier, which functions in the same way as a magnifying glass.
The shopper told Facebook group that she had been upstairs when she noticed that the bottom floor of her house was filled with smoke.
To her horror, her husband's paperwork had been reduced to ash - having been caught in sunrays magnified by the table stand.
Ann did acknowledge in her message that her husband had ignored one of the warnings on the box though.
In her post, she wrote: 'Clearly says on the box not to leave in direct sunlight which my other half did took it out the box last night in his little office left it on his desk, luckily I was home today but upstairs and came down to find the downstairs full of smoke opened the door to his office to find his paperwork smouldering…'
Aldi have been approached by The Sun for comment.
Ann wrote in her post that she had decided to reveal the incident because she was concerned for people who might have bought the product for 'an elderly relative or even a child'.
She included a picture of her husband's papers which had been reduced to smouldering ash.
The news comes just a month after the supermarket issued an urgent "do not eat" warning about one of its products.
Aldi is selling a cheap $4.49 item that will transform your garden into a colorful summer paradise
Aldi warned that its Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter contains milk, despite not saying this on the packaging.
The chain recalled all of the potato products as a result, offering a full refund to customers.
A spokesperson for the brand said: "Our supplier is recalling Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter because it contains the allergen milk which is not listed on the packaging.
"Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given.
"We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation."

Disgraced Scots lawyer rubbed shoulders with MPs despite being unmasked as paedophile
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A DISGRACED lawyer rubbed shoulders with MPs at a key meeting — despite being unmasked as a paedophile. Alan Eccles, 44, met with clients affected by a legal firm's collapse just three days after he pled guilty in court to child sex offences. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Alan Eccles shared child sex abuse images and chatted online with other beasts Credit: Law Society of Scotland 2 Sex offender Eccles at front of public meeting with MP Mr Stainbank on left Credit: Supplied But he kept his conviction from the Victims of McClure Action Group, as well as MPs John Grady, Susan Murray and Euan Stainbank. There is no suggestion any of the MPs were aware of Eccles' court case when they went to Titwood Bowling Club in Pollokshields, Glasgow, on May 9. The Scottish Sun had told on May 6 how the pervert admitted admitted to sharing indecent pics of kids and a woman plus engaging in obscene chats about the sexual abuse of children. Incredibly, he was spared jail when sentenced this month. The predator worked with Glasgow law firm Jones Whyte, which took over the files of McClure Solicitors after it went under in 2021. Many of their customers claim they were mis-sold trusts meant to simplify inheritance. Dominic Grech, of the Victims of McClure Action Group, said: 'Eccles didn't say at the meeting that he had already pled guilty to these offences. 'Any ordinary person would have received a jail sentence. It is again indicative of the legal profession and criminal justice system looking after their own. 'Allan Eccles represents everything that is wrong with how certain elements of the legal profession perceive the public. 'Like McClure's, they think they are untouchable and to an extent they are, because no one in authority will challenge them and hold them to account.' Case against Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann 'may be tainted' by disgraced cop's arrest, says John Wayne Gacy's lawyer Labour's Mr Stainbank and Mr Grady plus Lib Dem Ms Murray had attended on behalf of affected constituents. Another four MPs sent representatives. Eccles previously claimed he had helped in more than 100 McClure clients' cases. He said the volume of customers the company had dealt with was 'unmanageable'. But he insisted McClures had been doing nothing 'unlawful'. The sicko, of Bearsden, near Glasgow, returned to Paisley Sheriff Court for sentencing on June 2. Law chief Bruce Erroch told him: 'Your behaviour was despicable.' But he sentenced him to 300 hours of unpaid work, and an eight-month tag. Eccles was also placed on the sex offenders register for three years. He is still registered as a solicitor on the Law Society of Scotland website. Ms Murray said: 'I was not aware of Mr Eccles, his conviction or his past.' A Scottish Labour spokesman said: 'Mr Grady and Mr Stainbank went to the public meeting at the invitation of the Victims of McClure group. MPs from all parties were invited. Neither has any relationship with Eccles.'

How five men stole £4.75m toilet from Blenheim Palace in just five minutes
The full details of the raid and how two guilty suspects were brought to justice can be revealed JUSTICE CISTERN How five men stole £4.75m toilet from Blenheim Palace in just five minutes Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AS bathroom breaks go, it was a quickie. Five men took just five minutes to steal a £4.75million solid gold toilet from Blenheim Palace, the Oxfordshire birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The gang smashed their way into the stately home with sledge- hammers in the early hours. The masked raiders ripped the working WC from the wall, causing water to cascade from cut pipes, then rolled it out of the palace and into a waiting VW Golf getaway car. But within ten days of the audacious raid on September 14, 2019, police were being told the name of the man believed to be responsible: James 'Jimmy' Sheen. Detective Superintendent Bruce Riddell said 'community intelligence' — code for being ratted out — provided Sheen's name. The head of specialist operations at Thames Valley Police added: 'He went to hospital the day after for an injury to his hand, which we think he got from going through the window. "And as the investigations unfolded, thousands of the evidence exhibits were linked to him. 'On his phones we found voice messages of him trying to sell the gold. "Then we found traces of gold in his pockets, and in a flatbed lorry there was a pair of gloves containing fragments of the gold and his DNA.' 'Evidence overwhelming' The career criminal — a member of the traveller community — will have another four years to think about where his heist has landed him, added to the 19 years he is already doing inside. Jailing him at Oxford Crown Court yesterday, Judge Ian Pringle blasted: 'This bold and brazen heist took no more than five-and-a-half minutes to complete. 'America' has never been seen again.' Sir Winston Churchill's birthplace, Blenheim Palace, gets new autonomous robot tour guide that looks like Dalek from Doctor Who Sheen was out of jail on licence when he planned the Blenheim raid. He had received 14 years in 2010 when an innocent couple got caught in the spray from a shotgun during a shoot-out in Coventry with a rival traveller clan. Builder Sheen, 40, ran a burglary gang from his slick end-of-terrace home on an Oxford council estate. They broke into the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket in May 2020, making off with the Ascot Gold Vase and two Doncaster cups, and stole tractors and other farm equipment, making an estimated £2.6million within a year. Sheen also conned elderly customers out of hundreds of thousands of pounds for dodgy building work. 9 James Sheen was already in jail for 19 years - and has had an extra four years added to the sentence Credit: PA 9 Co-defendant Michael Jones was locked up for 27 months for helping plan the raid Credit: PA Yesterday Oxford Crown Court heard how Sheen's burglaries had grown more bold. His lawyer, Michael Neofytou, described the raid as 'crude', adding: 'It didn't have the hallmarks of a sophisticated heist.' The burglary leader pleaded guilty to conspiracy to burgle. The evidence against James Sheen was so overwhelming he had no choice but to plead guilty. Det Supt Riddell Co-defendant Michael Jones, 39, who had worked for Sheen's building company, was locked up for 27 months for helping plan the raid. The roofer — first convicted at the age of 13 — was found guilty in March of burglary. Yesterday, a judge said he wasn't satisfied Jones was one of the five masked men who actually took the golden loo. He had denied that a visit to see the sparkly toilet the day before it was stolen was a reconnaissance trip, and described the experience of using it for real as 'splendid'. Sheen and four others smashed through two locked gates in a pair of stolen cars. They then broke a side window and splintered two more doors before prising the 18-carat loo from the wall. Sheen's DNA was found on one of the hammers that was left behind. Red-faced palace bosses admitted that the exhibit — which had been installed at Blenheim days earlier — was not covered by CCTV. Chief executive Dominic Hare later told the BBC: 'We took possession of this precious item and managed to lose it within a day.' Cops found a mountain of dodgy messages on Sheen's phone. Two days after the raid, as he was laid up in hospital having an operation on an infected hand, Sheen texted gold dealer pal Fred Doe: 'I got something right up your path.' 9 Sheen and four others smashed through two locked gates in a pair of stolen cars Credit: PA 9 Sheen's DNA was found on one of the hammers that was left behind in the raid Credit: CPS The pair tried to flog the loot in London's Hatton Garden area. Det Supt Riddell said: 'The evidence against James Sheen was so overwhelming he had no choice but to plead guilty.' None of the gold has ever been recovered — but cops believe the toilet was broken up between the five thieves. Prosecutors say Sheen had tried to sell the gold to Bora Guccuk, a boyfriend of glam Instagram model Chloe Othen, but the deal collapsed. Hatton Garden jeweller Guccuk, 41, was cleared of money laundering in March. Doe, 36, was found guilty but spared jail last month for his part in trying to sell on the metal. Sheen's WhatsApps suggest he pawned his share in Birmingham, pocketing £520,000. Det Supt Bruce Riddell is now focusing on recouping Sheen's ill-gotten gains. He said: 'Trading Standards have already identified almost £200,000 worth of assets that they're in the process of recovering.' The seasoned cop is also trying to bring the three other members of the five-strong heist gang to justice. He appealed for anyone with information about the outstanding raiders to come forward, adding: 'Relationships and allegiances change over the years.' 9 Red-faced palace bosses admitted the exhibit — which had been installed at Blenheim days earlier — was not covered by CCTV Credit: Getty

Maniac bailed for savage street attack before going on to kill Scots dad-of-two
Stephen Kelly was jailed for attacking a dad in the street a month after receiving a life sentence FREED TO KILL Maniac bailed for savage street attack before going on to kill Scots dad-of-two Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MANIAC who murdered his 'best pal' and poured bleach down his throat was given extra jail time - for a savage street attack months before the killing. Brute Stephen Kelly and accomplices beat up and stabbed their victim with a metal pole in May 2023. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 6 Stephen Kelly refused to come out of his cell to attend court for sentencing after already being jailed for murder 6 Chris McMahon was stabbed and bludgeoned to death by Stephen Kelly 6 Kelly claimed to the court he killed pal Chris after he made derogatory comments about his dying dad 6 Stephen Kelly was jailed for 18 months by a Sheriff at Airdrie Sheriff Court Credit: Andrew Barr Astonishingly, he was bailed for that attack and went on to murder Chris McMahon in October the same year. Today Chris' heartbroken family blasted the decision set the thug free to kill as 'disgusting'. Sister Kirsty, 41, said: 'He should never have been let out. I can't help but think if he hadn't been let out Chris might still be here. He's just a violent, evil maniac and the fact that this first victim guy wasn't killed as well is just pure luck.' Five months before murdering dad-of-two Chris, Kelly and three other thugs savagely assaulted Ben Crawley knocking him unconscious, kicking, punching him in the head and body before stabbing him with a piece of metal as he lay helpless. Kelly was due to join John Gault, 25, Alexander Sirrell, 34, and Shaun Thorpe, 28, in the dock at Airdrie Sheriff Court today for the assault on Mr Crawley. However his lawyer told the court he had refused to come out of his cell at HMP Addiewell having 'rarely left it' since he was banged up for life for Chris' murder. Sheriff Derek Livingston agreed to sentence him in his absence, retorting: 'He will have plenty of opportunity to leave his cell in the next 22 years.' All four thugs had previously admitted to attacking Mr Crawley to his severe injury on May 25, 2023. Sirrell also admitted chasing the victim's stepson Ayden McVey and striking him on the body with the piece of metal. Kevin Morrow, prosecuting, told the court the victim had gone into Carluke town centre between 8pm and 9pm after receiving a phone call informing him that his stepson 'might be in some trouble'. Moment 'killer' brands sword 'sexy' before he 'murdered, 14, boy in rampage' Mr Morrow told the court: 'He was knocked to the ground and Gault, Thorpe and Kelly then inflicted numerous kicks to his head and body whereby he was rendered unconscious.' The victim attended hospital where an x-ray revealed a fractured jaw which left him on a 'soft' diet for a period of time and he was he felt he had to move away. Sheriff Derek Livingston jailed Kelly for 18 months to run alongside his life sentence. 6 Kelly, 29, was jailed for 22 years earlier this month for stabbing his lifelong pal Chris McMahon 6 Chris McMahon's mum Margaret and sister Kirsty say their family has been left devastated by his murder Credit: Les Gallagher During his murder trial Kelly claimed he had 'reacted' and killed Chris after he made 'derogatory comments' about his dying dad. However Chris's sister Kirsty said the fact he was on bail for the savage street attack proves he was 'lying'. She added: 'It was all lies. We knew that and this just proves it. Knowing that just five months before he killed Chris he kicked and beat this man flies in the face if his claims he just snapped in the moment.' Sirrell, of Ruchazie, Glasgow, was caged for 18 months for the attack on Mr Crawley, despite the court hearing he had a 'deeply troubled upbringing'. Sheriff Livingston said: 'This is the umpteenth time you have used a weapon and I'm not having that.' Gault, of Carluke, was put under supervision for two years and must do 180 hours of unpaid work, while Thorpe, of Hamilton, was electronically tagged for six months and ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid work. Evil Kelly was jailed for life last month for Chris's murder, with a minimum of 22 years. Kilmarnock High Court heard he told police 'I do not regret it one bit' after repeatedly stabbing dad-of-two Chris McMahon with an 18-inch hunting knife in the neck and chest, before smashing him in the head with a glass bottle and pouring bleach into his mouth. Kelly, who had fled the scene, was found the following day and told police: 'I will do the 25 years. 'I do not regret it one bit. I put bleach in his mouth and everything when he was dead.' Chris' family spoke exclusively to The Scottish Sun, blasting Kelly as a 'cold-blooded coward'. Mum Margaret, 69, told the Scottish Sun: 'He'd come to our house all the time. He was always here having his dinner as a wee boy. 'When I was told Chris was dead and Stephen did it, I could not take it in. It's unbelievable.' Brother John, 37, said: 'He's nothing but a coward and a cold-blooded killer.'Judge Lady Hood told Kelly: 'You showed no remorse. His family's lives have been ripped apart.'
