Deputy Digital Minister Calls For AI Legislation To Be Expedited
SHAH ALAM, June 28 (Bernama) -- Specific legislation governing artificial intelligence (AI) must be expedited due to the growing negative impact of the technology, particularly in fraud-related crimes.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said he was informed that between 2020 and 2024, AI-related crimes have resulted in an estimated global loss of around RM5 billion.
'I expect the AI legislation to be tabled this year so that we can tighten control and outline appropriate penalties for those who misuse this technology,' he said when met at the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 celebration, here today.
He was responding to questions regarding the misuse of AI technology, including incidents involving high-ranking government officials including former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Johor Police Chief Datuk M Kumar S Muthuvelu.
Acryl Sani and M Kumar had previously denied appearing in separate viral videos circulating on social media, which showed individuals resembling both of them allegedly receiving aid from a person bearing the title 'Datuk'.
He said in response to this matter, his ministry is actively conducting awareness campaigns through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme to engage and educate the public, especially in rural areas, so that they do not fall victim to AI-related fraud.
'I have gone to Sabah, the interior of Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to raise awareness among rural communities about the latest tactics and modus operandi of these criminals,' he said.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo was previously reported as saying that a full report on the proposed regulations and the possible enactment of specific legislation for AI would be submitted to his ministry by the end of this month.

Federal CID chief to be transferred to border control agency
Shuhaily Zain will be replaced by M Kumar as CID director at Bukit Aman. PETALING JAYA : Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain will be transferred to the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency on July 1. Shuhaily, who was appointed federal CID chief in August 2023, confirmed the transfer with Berita Harian but declined to comment further. He will reportedly take over as the director-general of the border agency until June 30, 2027 and replaces Hazani Ghazali who retired in February. Johor police chief M Kumar will take over from Shuhaily as Bukit Aman CID director. Kumar's replacement has yet to be announced. In August last year, Malaysiakini reported that Shuhaily and deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay would be involved in a major shake-up of Bukit Aman's leadership. The news portal quoted a source as saying Ayob might be transferred to lead either the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency or the border agency, while Shuhaily was speculated to take over as director-general of the national anti-drugs agency. The then IGP Razarudin Husain rejected the report, which led to a police investigation into Malaysiakini over its article, with three of its journalists summoned to give their statements last year.

Three police reports lodged over KL rally, says Dang Wangi OCPD
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received three reports about an incident that occurred during a rally held in the capital on Saturday (June 28) afternoon, including a scuffle that resulted in minor injuries to a police personnel. Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the rally, which was joined by about 100 people, began at 3.02pm outside a shopping mall along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman before it proceeded to Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Raja. A participant lit a flare at about 4.30pm, causing thick smoke that could have threatened the safety and health of other participants, security personnel and the public in the vicinity. "The police took preventive measures to control the situation but there was a scuffle between participants and personnel. A police personnel suffered minor injuries," he said in a statement Saturday. An investigation paper was opened under Section 353 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 3(5) and 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. He also advised the public not to speculate as it could disrupt investigations and to channel related information to the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or the Dang Wangi police headquarters control centre at 03-2600 2222. - Bernama

The appeal follows the death of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, 26, who fell while trekking in the park on June 21. Her body was found four days later at a depth of around 600 metres, but poor weather and difficult terrain delayed recovery efforts until June 25. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana has called on all visitors to strictly observe safety protocols and avoid venturing off designated trails. The incident occurred at 3.20 pm local time on Friday, when a local guide alerted the Sembalun Resort about the injured foreign national, identified as Nazli Awan Mahat. Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (BTNGR) head Yarman said the hiker was successfully evacuated on Saturday and brought to the Sembalun Community Health Centre at 8.30 am. "The hiker's condition was stable and he was able to carry out normal activities," he said in a statement.
