Dharmendra was the first choice of Amitabh Bachchan's blockbuster film, was the most expensive film of 1980s, film is.., its lead actress was...
In the unpredictable world of showbiz, how a film turns out at the box office nobody can ever predict. From the storyline, direction, to production, many paramount factors can contribute to making or breaking a film at the box office. But besides all the factors, the most important element of a film is its cast. A single casting can change the entire trajectory of a film. One such story is of an iconic film that came out in 1980, but it not only captivated the audience with its strong storyline, but also the cast shuffle that changed its fate.
Originally, the director of the film selected someone else for the lead role; however, in a turn of events, the film eventually went to someone whose fate was destined for it. The film we are talking about is none other than the superhit film Shaan. Released in 1980, this Ramesh Sippy film was considered one of the most expensive films of that era with its multi-starrer cast.
The film captivated the hearts of millions with its strong storyline and grand production. It featured top names of Bollywood like Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Ravi Kumar.Parveen Babi and Bindiya Goswami. However, what many don't know is that Amitabh Bachchan and Bindiya Goswani were not the first choice of filmmakers. In fact, Dharmendra was chosen for the role of Vijay and Hema Malini was chosen for the role of Renu. Being the top stars of that era, Dharmendra and Hema both had a massive fan following at that time.
However, it was reported that due to some differences with Ramesh Sippy, Dharmendra and Hema Malini rejected the offer.
Eventually the film went to the Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, making it a career-defining moment for him, he was first supposed to play the role of Ravi but after Dharmendra's exit, it was Vijay's role that went to him and later Shashi Kapoor played Ravi's role and Binditya Goswani replaced Hema Malini for the role of Bindu
Even today, the film continues to resonate with the audience. From its blockbuster song 'Pyaar Karne Wale' to its action-packed plot, the film is still hailed by the Indian audience. Made on the whopping budget of Rs. 4,35 crores, it collected almost times its budget, Rs 12.5 crores.
This story also shows how one star's rejection becomes a career-defining moment for the other star.

Thug Life: Kamal Haasan's 'Kannada was born from Tamil' remark comes back to haunt actor as gangster drama releases
Kamal Haasan is in the limelight because of his latest film Thug Life, which hit the screens on June 5 amid much fanfare. The Tamil gangster drama has, however, not been released in Karnataka. The film landed in controversy in the state after the Hey Ram actor's 'Kannada is born from Tamil' remark sparked outrage. Why hasn't Thug Life released in Karnataka and what is the expected impact? On May 27, Kamal Haasan attended the audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai. Kannada star Shivarajkumar too attended the function. Speaking at the event, Kamal said that Shivanna is his 'family' in another state. He then added that 'Kannada is born from Tamil'. This upset pro-Kannada activists who demanded a ban on Thug Life. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce then barred it from releasing in the state. This came on May 30, a day after the body gave Kamal Haasan 24 hours to apologise for his words but received no reply. A Karnataka High Court judge too rapped him for the remark. 'Discretion is the best part of valor. We will not permit anybody's sentiments to be taken for a ride like this by a public figure in a public forum. Mistakes do happen. We are not here for tongue bashing. When mistakes happen what must be done you must know. You cannot unscramble the scrambled egg. You have let it go beyond control. All will be well that ends well,' the court said orally as per Deccan Herald Kamal's past remark has now returned to haunt him as Thug Life has indeed not been released in Karnataka. According to Ramesh Bala, a trade analyst, Karnataka is an important market for Tamil films and contributes significantly to their collections. 'For Tamil stars Karnataka is a second or third market. On an average a film does around Rs 25 crore there. For Thug Life, it would have easily done Rs 40 crore+ in the market,' he told Indiatimes. Thug Life is expected to release in Karnataka next week. About Thug Life Thug Life is a gangster drama directed by Mani Ratnam. It features the seasoned actor as an influential man who is forced to fight with the very family he once built. The cast includes Trisha, Simbu, Ashok Selvan, Sanya Malhotra and Ali Fazal. AR Rahman is the music director. For all the latest coverage on Southern cinema & OTT shows, click here

Will Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 be able to outpace Kamal Haasan's Thug Life at the Box Office?
Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 and Kamal Haasan's Thug Life are set for a box office showdown, with advance bookings indicating a close race. Thug Life has already garnered significant pre-release revenue and positive early reviews, while Housefull 5 aims to leverage its wide release and franchise appeal to compete. The opening day collections will determine the ultimate winner. The big box office clash this week is between Akshay Kumar-led Housefull 5 and Kamal Haasan 's much-awaited Thug Life. While both films cater to entirely different audiences — one a Hindi comedy franchise directed by Tarun Mansukhani and the other a Tamil action drama directed by Mani Ratnam — the numbers pouring in from advance bookings are making this face-off an intriguing one as both the films are releasing just one day apart. As per the latest advance booking data, Housefull 5 has sold 1,16,746 tickets across India, grossing Rs 3.63 crore in advance sales as per Sacnilk, with block seats taking the number up to Rs 8.47 crore. The film, which is set for a wide release across 14,000+ shows, is showing promising trends in metro cities and single screens alike. On the other hand, Thug Life, which released today, has recorded a solid Rs 6.16 crore in advance bookings, selling 3,58,742 tickets across 11,357 shows. Including block seats, the film has touched Rs 13.89 crore, making it one of the strongest pre-release responses for a Tamil film this year. What's more, the early reports from audiences have been extremely positive, with social media already buzzing about Kamal Haasan's performance and Mani Ratnam's gripping morning 10 AM- the film has already eaned around Rs 2 crore from morning shows which began at 9 AM. Trade expects Thug Life to easily breach the Rs 20 crore mark on its opening day, fueled by strong word-of-mouth, especially in Tamil Nadu and Telugu states. The film's Hindi version has made a modest start but is expected to pick up over the weekend due to positive reviews and crossover Life is at a loss in one state - Karnataka. Following the language row and court hearing Kamal Haasan- the actor and producer of the film decided to not release the film in the state. The question now is whether Housefull 5, which releases tomorrow, can surpass Thug Life's first-day numbers. Historically, the Housefull franchise has delivered big openings, and with an ensemble cast and comic entertainment value, it has a shot at challenging Thug Life's day-one total — provided it converts its advance bookings into solid spot bookings and walk-ins. As things stand, Housefull 5 will need to cross the Rs 20 crore opening day figure to stay ahead in this box office clash. All eyes are on tomorrow's collections to see which film emerges the true winner. Housefull 5 features names like Abhishek Bachchan, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan , Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff , Nana Patekar, Sonam Bajwa, Chitrangada SIngh , Nargis Fakhri while Thug Life has names like STR, Trisha, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf.
