Bavuma and Markram swung WTC final in South Africa's favor
LONDON (AP) — Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma didn't have the pleasure of finishing off what they started.
No problem.
South Africa won the World Test Championship
and that's all that mattered to them.
It was fitting that Markram and Bavuma led the comeback with the bat as South Africa beat Australia by five wickets by
completing a run chase of 282 at Lord's
on the fourth day Saturday.
They were the linchpins of a batting unit considered to be South Africa's weak point and their partnership of 147 — 143 on Friday — tore the game away from Australia after the bowlers dominated the first two days.
But their stand was almost over before it began when Bavuma strained his left hamstring on 9 just before tea on Friday. He was hobbling, struggling to run.
Coach Shukri Conrad didn't want Bavuma to continue.
'The coaches thought the wiser decision was to let someone else in who could run properly,' Bavuma said. 'But I thought it was important I stayed out here and put up a total. It could've gone the other way and I could've been criticized but we're here now.'
Markram called Bavuma's innings of 65 not out on Friday — ultimately 66 on Saturday — an innings to remember as the captain ran raggedly but batted brilliantly.
'We got the best of the batting conditions,' Conrad said. 'Two-eighty was always going to be a stiff task. But the two pros, Aiden and Temba, stood tall and took us through. I was the one who said Temba shouldn't bat (after the injury) but the partnership was critical, and they know better than the coaches.'
Bavuma, the most experienced player in the Proteas and the first Black South African to score a century, has been at ease with himself a lot more since Conrad became the coach two years ago. Together, they have won 11 of 15 tests. Bavuma is unbeaten in 10 tests as a captain.
Previously, he struggled with being the hope of a nation, anxious trying to prove something to everyone ahead of himself. When he suffered untimely drops in form at the 2022 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup, he was savagely abused on social media and in public.
He's silenced his doubters for now. So has Markram.
Markram's MVP-winning 136, only his second century away from home in eight years, is expected to give the allrounder who opens the confidence to lift his test reputation to the repute he enjoys in T20s and ODIs.
Until this match, Markram was the only South Africa captain to win a World Cup, the under-19 version in 2014. His test career has roller-coastered but he was recalled by Conrad and backed by Bavuma. Markram led the team to the 2024 T20 World Cup final but wasn't scarred by defeat when victory was in sight, another tribute to his resilience.
'Aiden is unbelievable, people have questioned his place, but he has character,' Bavuma said. 'He played (the WTC final) in true Aiden fashion.'
Markram was controlled and chanceless in a stay of six hours, 23 minutes on a flat pitch.
'It will rank up there as number one,' he said. 'My test career has been hard going, very stop-start. Weird how things worked out after a duck in the first innings. Need a bit of luck. It's one of the most special days.'

Pogačar ready for the Tour de France after winning Critérium du Dauphiné
PARIS (AP) — Tadej Pogačar produced a dominant display ahead of his Tour de France defense by winning the Critérium du Dauphiné for the first time. The UAE Team Emirates rider finished 59 seconds ahead of second-placed Jonas Vingegaard overall after controlling the eighth and final 133-kilometer (83-mile) stage on Sunday from Val-d'Arc to the Plateau du Mont-Cenis. 'Once again today, the team did a great job,' Pogačar said. 'We managed to defend the jersey and we can go home happy and prepare for the Tour.' Pogačar will seek his fourth Tour de France title in July. The Slovenian finished third Sunday with the same time as his major rival, two-time Tour champion Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike, who was second. Lenny Martinez won the final stage in 3 hours, 34 minutes, 18 seconds for Bahrain Victorious, atop the Plateau du Mont-Cenis located on the French-Italian border. The French rider finished 34 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and Pogačar. Pogačar reacted with ease to Vingegaard's attack on the final climb to Col du Mont-Cenis in a tough race that Tour contenders use to fine-tune their preparations. After winning the opening stage, outsprinting Vingegaard and Mathieu van der Poel, Pogačar went on the attack in the mountains. He took charge by winning the sixth stage on Friday, climbing to the finish line alone to beat Vingegaard by 1:01 and take an overall lead of 43 seconds over the Dane. He captured the seventh stage on Saturday in a similar fashion, beating Vingegaard by 14 seconds and extending his overall lead to 1:01. Sunday's stage was the last day of Romain Bardet's professional career. The Frenchman, who is retiring, finished second in the 2016 Tour. ___ AP sports:

Twins scratch Byron Buxton from series finale vs. Astros after being hit by pitch
HOUSTON (AP) — Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton was scratched from Sunday's lineup a day after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch. Buxton left Saturday's game against the Houston Astros with a bruised elbow after Hunter Brown's throw in the sixth inning of a 3-2 loss . Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said after the game they didn't believe the injury was serious and that Buxton was listed as day to day. Buxton — scratched about an hour before first pitch — had been scheduled to lead off and play center field in the series finale. He was replaced in center field by Harrison Bader. Buxton is batting .273 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs in 54 games this season. He missed about two weeks last month after sustaining a concussion in a collision with Carlos Correa. ___ AP MLB:

Italy Turns to Gennaro Gattuso to get World Cup Hopes Back on Track
Former hard-tackling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was named Italy coach on Sunday, tasked with reviving the country's already-flagging World Cup qualifying hopes. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired last week after Italy lost its opening qualifier 3-0 at Norway to spark fears that the four-time champion will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup. Gattuso lifted one of those World Cups as a player, in 2006. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian soccer, the blue shirt is like a second skin for him," Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said. "His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the national team's next matches. "Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and total dedication with which he accepted this challenge." Claudio Ranieri was the Italian soccer federation's top choice to replace Spalletti but he turned down the offer. Gattuso's last coaching job was at Hajduk Split but he left the Croatian club by mutual consent at the start of the month after just one season in charge. The 47-year-old had previously coached AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille, among others. Check out the kickoff of the one year to go ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup! As a player, Gattuso also won two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan, where he made 468 appearances and scored 11 goals. His only goal in 73 appearances for Italy was a fierce 25-meter strike against England in a 1-0 win in November 2000. Gattuso's only trophy as a coach was the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2010. Italy is already nine points behind Norway in its World Cup qualifying group, albeit having played two matches fewer than the group leader. The Azzurri followed up its dismal opening loss with a 2-0 win over minnow Moldova last Monday in what was Spalletti's final match in charge. He had revealed that he was being fired the previous day. Gattuso's first match as Italy coach will be at home to Estonia on Sept. 5. Israel is also in five-team Group I. Italy hosts Norway in the final round on Nov. 16. Only the group winner advances directly to the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The runner-up enters playoff brackets to be played next March. That was the stage where Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia and ruled out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively. Gattuso will be presented at a news conference in Rome on Thursday. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
