Butter linked to higher death risk while plant-based oils may boost health

The study identified a significantly lower risk of premature death among people who ate a lot of plant-based oils over three decades.

Replacing butter with plant-based oils may boost your health and reduce the risk of dying early, new research suggests.
The study, which was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, included about 221,000 people in the US who were middle-aged or older. Their diets and health outcomes were tracked for up to 33 years.
During that time, people who ate the most butter had a 15 per cent higher risk of death than those who ate the least amount of butter.
People who ate the most plant-based oils had a mortality risk that was 16 per cent lower than those who ate the least plant-based oils.
Swapping butter with plant-based oils was associated with a 17 per cent lower risk of death, the analysis found.
'That is a pretty huge effect on health,' Yu Zhang, the study's lead author and a research assistant at Brigham and Women's Hospital in the US, said in a statement.
Not all plant-based oils are created equal. Olive oil, soybean oil, and rapeseed or canola oil were all tied to lower risks of death overall as well as from cancer and heart disease – but the study did not find any link between health risks and corn or safflower oil.
They also did not analyse palm or coconut oils, which are high in saturated fats that have been linked to cardiovascular diseases.
Notably, some of these plant-based oils are considered seed oils, which have drawn the ire of wellness influencers – and some politicians – in recent years.
Seed oils are made from whole seeds that are processed to extract oil.
Critics have labelled oils from corn, cottonseed, rapeseed, soy, safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, and rice bran as the 'hateful eight,' alleging that they are behind the surge in chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
But many foods that use seed oils – such as ultra-processed and fast foods – are also high in sodium and processed carbohydrates, making them unhealthy for other reasons.
'There has been much negative publicity about vegetable oils on social media, which are based on unfounded claims of potential harmful effects,' Tom Sanders, a professor emeritus of nutrition and dietetics at King's College London who was not involved with the study, said in a statement.
Health risks tied to different fat sources
By focusing on mortality risks, the new study injects some clarity into the debate – but has limitations.
It's also in line with findings from a research team that analysed studies and made dietary recommendations for the Nordic and Baltic countries.

They said oils rich in unsaturated fats, like olive and rapeseed oil, appear better for health than those rich in saturated fats, such as butter and palm and coconut oils.
Saturated fat mostly comes from animal sources and is tied to elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, known as the 'bad' cholesterol. That in turn is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
Meanwhile, plant-based oils have more unsaturated fatty acids. One type is omega-3, which can help reduce inflammation.
Another is omega-6, which is tied to lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer but a higher risk of inflammation.

It can be difficult to identify how much butter or plant-based oil shapes health relative to other factors.
In the new study, people who ate more butter were also more likely to be obese and smoke, and they were less likely to exercise compared with those who ate more plant-based oils.
The study authors tried to take these differences into account in their analysis, but independent researchers warned that they could still skew the results.
Further, most people included in the study were health professionals, who may not be representative of the overall population.

Despite these limitations, Sanders said it 'remains possible' that the type of fatty acids in vegetable oils could have curbed health risks 'by a variety of mechanisms'.
'The take home message is that it is healthier to choose unsaturated vegetable oils rather than butter,' Sanders said.

Humans are used to thinking of trees as a reusable resource, but new analysis suggests that a third of all forest loss this century is irreversible. The report from the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Google DeepMind offers the most detailed view to date of what's driving deforestation, by identifying causes of permanent loss like agriculture, mining, and infrastructure. It found that 34 per cent (177 million hectares) of all global forest loss between 2001 and 2024 is permanent, as trees in those areas are unlikely to grow back naturally. Ongoing agriculture is responsible for 95 per cent of that total, though there are wide regional differences. 'We've long known where forests are being lost. Now we better understand why,' says Michelle Sims, research associate at WRI. 'This knowledge is essential to developing smarter actions at the regional, national and even local level - to protect remaining forests and restore degraded ones'. Concerningly, the proportion of forest erasure tied to permanent land use change rises to 61 per cent in tropical rainforests, home to Earth's most vital ecosystems for biodiversity and carbon storage. That's 50.7 million hectares - or an area nearly the size of Thailand - gone for good. In Europe, the researchers found that 91 per cent of tree cover loss is due to timber harvesting, much of it within managed forests where regrowth is planned. In heavily forested Sweden, for example, the routine harvest of timber caused 98 per cent of all tree cover loss from 2001-2024 (6 million hectares). The Nordic nation is one of the world's largest producers of wood products, including pulp, paper and other sawn wood materials. After trees are harvested, they are replanted or allowed to naturally regenerate. In theory, this means that tree cover loss is temporary and balanced by regrowth in managed cycles. But globally speaking, even the two-thirds of forest loss driven by 'temporary' causes, such as logging, wildfires, natural disturbances or shifting cultivation, can leave deep scars. Forest regeneration depends on how the land is managed afterwards, the type of forest and the degree of environmental stress it faces, the report cautions. 'Just because trees grow back doesn't mean forests return to their original state,' says Radost Stanimirova, research associate at WRI. 'They might store less carbon, have fewer species or be more vulnerable to future damage. And climate change is making many natural events like fires and pest outbreaks more intense and frequent, which makes it harder for forests to recover.' In temperate and boreal regions such as Russia and North America, logging and wildfires - often triggered by lightning or human activity, then fanned by climate change - are the primary drivers of forest loss. Thanks to an advanced AI model and satellite imagery, the findings represent a significant advancement in forest intelligence. By pinpointing the underlying causes of forest loss in different places, the data enables policymakers, companies and communities to design more targeted solutions to tackle deforestation. WRI has some immediate recommendations, including strengthening Indigenous and local land rights, designing policies that reflect local farming and land use realities, improving how forests are managed and monitored, and ensuring infrastructure and agricultural expansion are guided by strong environmental planning. It also stresses that local land use dynamics are shaped by global market forces. To this end, the EU's Deforestation Regulation - which requires suppliers of palm oil, timber, coffee, beef and other commodities to prove their production did not cause forest clearance - must be enforced. Meanwhile, the researchers add, reducing wildfire risk demands ecosystem-specific fire management and early warning systems. A ban on deep-sea fishing in parts of the Atlantic rich with marine life has been upheld by the EU's General Court. It means these areas will remain restricted to help preserve vulnerable species and ecosystems. The decision comes after the same court ruled last month in a German case that Marine Protected Areas must be protected from bottom trawling. Separate legal actions were filed by the Spanish government and fishermen from Galicia and Asturias who challenged a 2016 EU rule that banned fishing with nets and longlines in 87 areas of the Atlantic off the coasts of Spain, Ireland, Portugal and France. When the rules came into effect in 2022, Spain sued the European Commission, claiming that it failed to consider the economic damage to fishermen. It also questioned the scientific methods used to determine how banned fishing gear and protected areas were chosen. The rules were adopted by the EU to conserve fish stocks in the deep sea and to protect marine life from fishing gear being dragged along the sea floor. Among other things, these regulations outlaw the controversial fishing practice of bottom trawling below a depth of 800 metres in these parts of the north-east Atlantic. Species found at depth in the oceans, such as alfonsinos, black scabbardfish, roundnose grenadier, red seabream and some shark species, collapse quickly because they are vulnerable to fishing and slow to reproduce, according to the EU. The court stressed that the decision to protect these areas was in line with EU law. In its ruling, it said that the 87 areas were chosen because of the 'proven or provable presence of protected species'. Due to the vulnerability of these areas, it said that regulators were not required to assess whether some kinds of fishing gear were less damaging or the economic impact on fishermen. The ruling also allows the European Commission to continue using scientific input from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea in determining future conservation areas. Lawyers from environmental organisation ClientEarth say the ruling is likely to have a positive impact on other legal cases on bottom trawling happening across the EU. 'There is now too much evidence about the damage wrought by wide-scale, repeat bottom trawling to ignore,' says ClientEarth ocean lawyer Francesco Maletto. 'We are heartened to see the EU's General Court again uphold the principles of legal protection, keeping these areas of the ocean safe from harm, and ensuring healthy fish and marine wildlife populations.' ClientEarth and others have launched legal action against multiple national governments, as well as bringing complaints to the EU itself, over the failure to tackle harmful fishing taking place in Marine Protected Areas. At last count, no EU country had a definitive roadmap to ban bottom trawling in zones designated for official protection. After footage of bottom trawling from the film Ocean with David Attenborough shocked the world, calls for action have heightened. Some commitments to ban the practice have emerged from the UN Ocean Conference this week in Nice, with the UK and France making initial commitments to crack down on the practice.

That's the key message Denmark wants parents to keep in mind as part of its new campaign to get them to talk with their teenage children about the risk of opioids, a small but growing public health threat in the Nordic country. The Danish health authority and the city of Copenhagen launched the campaign this week after discovering in a February survey that 47 per cent of parents do not know enough about opioids to talk to their children about them. The campaign offers advice from teenagers and experts on how to talk to young people about opioids, which include some types of prescription painkillers as well as heroin and fentanyl, an ultra-potent synthetic opioid. It says parents should broach the subject in a casual way, set clear expectations, and avoid becoming preachy or upset. 'With the new campaign, we will better equip parents and other adults around young people to talk about opioids – and show them how important a role they play for young people,' Jonas Egebart, director of the Danish health authority, said in a statement. Parental outreach is one plank of a government plan announced last year to prevent young people from abusing opioids, which has been a growing public health problem in Denmark in recent years. While some people take opioids legally – for example, cancer patients who are prescribed painkillers – they can quickly lead to addiction, which in turn can have deadly consequences. From 2018 to 2023, the number of Danes aged 25 or younger who were hospitalised because of an opioid overdose rose from 142 to 239 – a 68 per cent increase. In 2023, the country reported 116 opioid-related deaths, mostly tied to methadone and heroin, government data shows. Denmark's new approach to opioids includes a range of measures. People caught in possession of or selling the drugs were previously slapped with a fine, but under the government plan they could be sent to jail. The country is also boosting its drug surveillance and will take steps to improve treatment options for people struggling with addiction.

Twins study shows how genetic response to environment impacts health

It's an age-old question: is nature or nurture more responsible for how we turn out in life? Scientists have long believed that some combination of our genes and environment – our diets, lifestyles, traumatic events, and much more – shape our personalities and health outcomes. Now, new research indicates there's another step involved, with our genes affecting how we respond to our life experiences – and these pathways making it more or less likely that we will grapple with a slew of psychological conditions. The study, which was published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, analysed data from nearly 22,000 identical twins across 11 studies, in what researchers said was the largest study yet to map the entire DNA of identical twins. They identified genetic-environmental links to conditions as wide-ranging as anxiety, depression, psychotic experiences, neuroticism, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). 'These findings confirm that genes influence psychiatric and neurodevelopmental traits partly through affecting how people respond to the world around them,' Thalia Eley, one of the study's authors and a professor of developmental behavioural genetics at King's College London, said in a statement. The researchers looked at identical twins because they have almost the exact same genetic code, making it possible to zero in on how people's DNA and lived experiences interact – and what that overlap means for our well-being. For example, if identical twins had genes that made them more sensitive to environmental factors, they were expected to be different from each other because they each had unique life experiences that set them on different paths, mental health-wise. But if identical twins had genes that made them less sensitive to outside factors, they were expected to have more similar traits to one another. Knowing this, the researchers identified particular genes that seemed to carry more weight than others. Growth-related genes were associated with autistic traits, the study found, while genes related to stress reactivity were tied to depression and genes that help regulate stress hormones were tied to psychotic-like experiences. The researchers said the findings could be used to better understand how the DNA-lifestyle nexus shapes people's health outcomes, and what that means for people struggling with serious mental health or neurological issues. 'Some people are more sensitive to their circumstances, and this can be positive in good circumstances, but can make life more challenging than for others in stressful circumstances,' Eley said.
