Aussie tradies cop $126,000 in fines for 'disgusting and vile' act shared on social media
WARNING — GRAPHIC CONTENT: Three tradies have been fined a collective $126,000 in animal cruelty charges over what a magistrate described as an "absolutely disgusting, vile and reprehensible" attack against a pigeon with a golf club.
According to the RSPCA's Western Australia branch, the trio bragged about the disturbing incident online on social media, attracting swift criticism from both the authorities and animal rights groups alike.
The WA-based men, one aged 24 and two aged 30, all pleaded guilty to animal cruelty at the Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Monday. They were working at the Norseman Gold Project at the time of the offence on June 17, 2023.
The younger man was fined $48,000 while the older two were fined $39,000. All three had their applications for a spent conviction (a conviction for a crime that is not disclosed publicly) dismissed.
In the footage uploaded to Snapchat, one of the offenders was heard speaking to the pigeon, saying "be careful, alright? Because there's some bad c**** around here".
The video shows two men initially holding a white and grey pigeon, before the 24-year-old man strikes it with a golf club, sending the bird flying more than a metre through the air. The clip is captioned, "May his soul rest in peace," accompanied by a laughing emoji.
After the bird lands, both men are heard laughing. The 24-year-old then proceeded to hit the pigeon four more times, with feathers visibly falling out after each blow. He then picks the injured bird up by its foot, leaving it hanging upside down.
The pigeon remained alive and visibly moving throughout the assault, before the man placed it in a nearby skip bin. In sentencing, Magistrate William Yoo said the attack was "a disgusting and despicable thing to do", branding the offenders "incomprehensible" and "abominable".
"[The act] was absolutely disgusting, vile and reprehensible," he said. "[The pigeon's] distress was evident, and the pigeon was an innocent and vulnerable animal."

Magistrate Yoo said the younger man knew what he was doing and there was a "degree of persistence" in his actions. He told each offender they "egged each other on" and "betrayed [their] own humanity". "[This is a] very serious and shocking matter which should shock the public's conscience," he said.
RSPCA WA Inspector Manager Kylie Green echoed the strong sentiment.
"There is never an excuse to torment or abuse an animal," she said. "The fines handed down today are profoundly significant, and it is hoped the message is loud and clear to those who think that cruelty towards animals is okay." Two of the men were also sentenced under sections 7 and 8 of the Criminal Code. It was found that they aided and encouraged the third offender to commit the offence.

Pair jailed for life for young father's murder at flat
A man and woman who killed a young father in a 'murderous attack' in a flat have been jailed for life. Cameron Woods stabbed Robert Fisher, 26, through the heart during the attack in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on July 23, 2023, using a knife brought by Stacey Balfour. Mr Fisher, 26, was so severely injured that he died four days later at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. The pair were found guilty of acting 'in concert' to murder Mr Fisher at the flat in Maxwellton Court following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow in May this year. Lady Hood jailed the pair for life when they returned to the court for sentencing on Tuesday. She ordered Woods, 27, who was on bail at the time of the murder, to spend a minimum of 18 years and six months before he is eligible for parole, while Balfour, 24, must serve a minimum of 16 years. Lady Hood said: 'Robert Fisher died from a stab wound to the heart, one of a number of injuries. The knife was brought by you Stacey Balfour and was wielded by you, Cameron Woods. 'It was the verdict of the jury that you were acting in concert and were both responsible for this murderous attack.' She said that there was 'no doubt that the knife was wielded and the fatal blow struck by Cameron Woods'. Lady Hood said that in their victim impact statement Mr Fisher's family described him as 'caring' and talked of goals he was working towards but will never achieve. She said they also 'explained the impact of Mr Fisher's death on his young daughter' and added that no sentence she imposes will be enough to make up for the family's loss. Lady Hood said that she took Balfour's age into account when deciding her sentence as she was under 25 at the time of the offence, and sentencing guidelines for that age group are different from those for older people. Thomas Ross KC, representing Balfour, said that she had previously been in a 'toxic relationship' and was to some extent 'in a very dark place' at the time of the offence. He urged the judge to consider Balfour's lack of previous convictions, personal circumstances and the sentencing guidelines when deciding on her sentence. Donald Findlay KC, representing Woods, said there was 'no pre-planning' in the murder. He said: 'Nobody set out looking for trouble, it ought to have been a pleasant social occasion but something clearly happened that led to a conflict and as a consequence of whatever that was, what occurred followed.'

Jury orders man to pay $500,000 for assaulting D.C. police officer who died by suicide after Capitol riot
A federal jury on Monday awarded $500,000 to the widow and estate of a police officer who died by suicide nine days after he helped defend the U.S. Capitol from a mob of rioters, including a man who scuffled with the officer during the attack. The eight-member jury ordered that man, 69-year-old chiropractor David Walls-Kaufman, to pay $380,000 in punitive damages and $60,000 in compensatory damages to Erin Smith for assaulting her husband, Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. They awarded an additional $60,000 to compensate Jeffrey Smith's estate for his pain and suffering. The judge presiding over the civil trial dismissed Erin Smith's wrongful-death claim against Walls-Kaufman before jurors began deliberating last week. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes said no reasonable juror could conclude that Walls-Kaufman's actions were capable of causing a traumatic brain injury leading to Smith's death. Walls-Kaufman, who lived a few blocks from the Capitol, denied assaulting Smith. He says any injuries that the officer suffered on Jan. 6 occurred later in the day, when another rioter threw a pole that struck Smith around his head. On Friday, the jury sided with Erin Smith and held Walls-Kaufman liable for assaulting her 35-year-old husband — an encounter captured on the officer's body camera. "Erin is grateful to receive some measure of justice," said David P. Weber, one of her attorneys. Walls-Kaufman said the outcome of the trial is "absolutely ridiculous." "No crime happened. I never struck the officer. I never intended to strike the officer," he said. "I'm just stunned." After the jury left the courtroom, Reyes encouraged the parties to confer and discuss a possible settlement to avoid the time and expense of an appeal and for the sake of "finality." "You guys settle, you can move on with your lives," the judge said. Walls-Kaufman's attorney, Hughie Hunt, described the jury's award as "shocking." "We're talking about a three-second event," he told the judge. "It's not shocking, Mr. Hunt. A lot of things can happen in three seconds," Reyes replied. Jeffrey Smith was driving to work for the first time after the Capitol riot when he shot himself with his service weapon. His family said he had no history of mental health problems before the Jan. 6 riot. Erin Smith claims Walls-Kaufman struck her husband in the head with his own police baton, giving him a concussion and causing psychological and physical trauma that led to his suicide. Body camera footage obtained by CBS News appears to show that Jeffrey Smith was the target of multiple assaults on Jan. 6, at least once inside the Capitol and then again a few hours later — outside at the west front of the Capitol. The images of the attack were pivotal to Erin Smith's efforts to change the designation of her husband's death. "I think the physical attack on him changed him," Erin Smith told CBS News in 2022. "If he didn't go to work that day, he'd still be here." Undated: Erin and Jeffrey Smith Jack Reznicki, photo provided by Erin Smith The police department medically evaluated Smith and cleared him to return to full duty before he died by suicide. In 2022, the District of Columbia Police and Firefighters' Retirement and Relief Board determined that Smith was injured in the line of duty and the injury was the "sole and direct cause of his death," according to the lawsuit. Walls-Kaufman served a 60-day prison sentence after pleading guilty to a Capitol riot-related misdemeanor in January 2023, but he was pardoned in January. On his first day back in the White House, President Donald Trump pardoned, commuted prison sentences or ordered the dismissal of cases for all of the nearly 1,600 people charged in the attack. More than 100 law-enforcement officers were injured during the riot. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick collapsed and died a day after engaging with the rioters. A medical examiner later determined he suffered a stroke and died of natural causes. Howard Liebengood, a Capitol police officer who responded to the riot, also died by suicide after the attack. Erin Smith's quest isn't over. She applied for the National Law Enforcement Memorial to add her husband's name as a line-of-duty death. Weber said they're hoping for a decision soon.
