Meet at Upper Fort Garry tonight for a queer history walking tour.
For the next month, nearly every corporation, police service and level of government in Canada will be flying the rainbow flag, but less than 40 years ago, when Winnipeg had its first pride parade in 1987, participants still felt compelled to mask their faces with paper bags to protect their identities.
It's a reminder that Winnipeg's queer history is one of persecution as well as celebration, a legacy represented in the city's queer walking tours.
Join local cultural historian Britt Bauer tonight for the Winnipeg Queer History Walk, a free tour from Upper Fort Garry through downtown and the Exchange District. No registration needed — just show up with comfortable walking shoes.
The Winnipeg Architecture Foundation also has a self-guided Winnipeg Queer History Tour, which covers resource and health centres, clandestine cruising spots, early gay bars and social clubs (did you know that Gio's was originally called the Winnipeg Gay Community Centre?). Create Account And like the old Sicilian saying, sometimes that bitter blue plate special is best served cold. Perkins had concluded a stellar career in the United States Coast Guard. After her service, her life took a different direction, and she entered the porn business before moving to OnlyFans as a model named Selena Savage. TRANSFORMATION: From Coast Guard to killer. INSTAGRAM But life is full of twists and turns, and the 35-year-old beauty was determined to settle an old score. The object of her hatred was a 31-year-old man named Matthew Dunmire. Perkins would claim to anyone who would listen that Dunmire had raped her years before when the pair were in high school in Virginia. The brunette beauty went to the cops in 2017, but they blew her off. Last week, Perkins confessed to second-degree murder in the execution-style slaying of Dunmire. Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. Please try again This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Chelsea Perkins claimed Matthew Dunmire had raped her in high school. *** In 2017, cops in Virginia Beach told the FBI they didn't have enough evidence to charge Dunmire, court records cited by the Cleveland Plain Dealer said. Perkins wasn't ready to let the matter drop. The Coast Guard vet confessed to travelling nearly 500 km from Virginia to Ohio to meet Dunmire. They were not strangers and had known each other for years before the slaying. In March 2021, Perkins messaged Dunmire on Facebook, drove to Cleveland and spent the night with him at an Airbnb rental. MUGSHOT: CHELSEA PERKINS. OSP According to cops, on March 6, 2021, he sent a text to his girlfriend that he planned to donate plasma and then return home. When he didn't show, authorities tracked his phone to the Terra Vista Natural Study Area of the park. Perkins had lured the aspiring musician to a popular trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Once on the trail, Perkins parked a bullet in Dunmire's brain. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'While hiking off-trail into a wooded area of the park, Perkins used a loaded firearm she brought with her to shoot the victim in the back of the head, killing him,' a U.S. Department of Justice press release read. KILLER: Chelsea Perkins. INSTAGRAM Dunmire's body wasn't discovered until three days later when hikers came upon the macabre scene. But putting the handcuffs on Perkins, who is married to another Coast Guardsman, was no easy task. It took the FBI nine months to find her using GPS data, DNA, social media records, tracking her phone and ballistics testing on shell casings discovered at the crime scene. *** Cops zeroed in on Perkins when one of Dunmire's co-workers revealed that four days before his murder, the musician said he was 'meeting a girl' who was staying in the Cleveland area. The co-worker added that a dark-haired woman had picked up Dunmire in a tiny white Smart car. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. GUNS R US: Chelsea Perkins. INSTAGRAM The vehicle was traced back to Perkins' husband, whom she had met in the service. Witnesses told investigators they had seen a woman who matched Perkins' description in the area on the day of the murder. They added that they heard a gunshot in the late morning. At Perkins' home in Alexandria, Virginia, the feds found three 9mm pistols. One had bullets that matched the slug they dug out of Dunmire's skull. Now, Perkins faces 25 years in prison for her plea. She will be sentenced on Sept. 9. WAS THE VICTIM A RAPIST? Matthew Dunmire. FACEBOOK *** But there was yet another sour twist in the bizarre slaying. Months after Dunmire was murdered, his grieving parents also took up guns to settle the score with Perkins. At the time, the porn star was still on the run. In November 2021, Tommie Lynn Dunmire and John Nelson McQuillen drove to Washington, DC, to kill their son's alleged killer. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Tommie Lynn disguised herself as a UPS driver and rapped on the door of an apartment unit where she believed Perkins was hiding. A woman answered the door and was shot twice in the stomach. It was not Chelsea Perkins, the woman was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The innocent victim miraculously survived the gunshot wounds. Dunmire's parents fled the scene and were later tracked down by the feds in Florida. As cops closed in following a high-speed chase, the grieving mom shot herself dead. John Nelson McQuillen pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and was jailed for three years. Influencer culture pilloried in prose
Part mystery, part satire and even part horror, second-generation Chinese-Canadian writer Liann Zhang's debut novel is a bizarre but entertaining look at the world of social media influencer culture. Julie Chan is a supermarket cashier with no friends who steals food from work to keep herself fed. One day, she receives a disturbing phone call from her estranged twin sister, Chloe, a rich influencer with followers in the millions. Sensing something is wrong, Julie travels to Chloe's New York City penthouse and finds her sister dead on the floor. As she's about to report the death to the police, Julie quickly makes the rash decision to switch places, ditching her sad, anonymous life for her twin's more comfortable and glamorous one. Julie Chan is Dead With unwitting help from Chloe's manager, Julie seamlessly continues her sister's social media life, interacting with fans, receiving lavish gifts and going to trendy parties. At first, no one in Chloe's world suspects the truth, and everyone writes off any strange behaviour as her just being '#sad' and '#grieving.' But it doesn't take long for her aunt and cousin to figure out what's going on, and Julie soon finds herself being blackmailed. In order to pay off her scheming family members, she becomes a lot more obvious with paid endorsements on her channels, while watching her numbers drop on each platform. Thankfully, Julie has her new influencer friends to cheer her up. A group of mostly indistinguishable twentysomething white women, the Belladonnas are led by Bella Marie, whose level of fame and wealth seems almost unattainable for a social media personality. But, of course, Julie soon learns her new friends may be hiding some sinister secrets. Toronto- and Vancouver-based Zhang was only 16 when she had her own brush with internet fame, gaining over 20,000 followers on a skincare-themed Instagram account. The author, who now has a degree in psychology and criminology, says this book was inspired by the fellow influencers she met through group chats. Clearly she has some strong, negative feelings from this experience, as most characters are quite unlikable — even Julie, who quickly embraces her new personality. Zhang takes some fun shots at influencer culture, and that cynical humour drives the first half of the novel. But it does get dragged down by some very predictable turns. Then a huge twist comes that makes the second half seem like a different book altogether. It quickly delves into cult-horror territory — think Rosemary's Baby or The Wicker Man but with trite self-help affirmations and beauty tips. The shift may be a bit jarring for some readers, but Zhang's cutting humour is amped up, along with the overall pace, which all leads to a ridiculous, over-the-top finale. While it has some flaws, Julie Chan is Dead is a fun, memorable debut. Hardly an influencer, Alan MacKenzie is struggling to find 600 subscribers for his YouTube channel.

Postmedia may earn an affiliate commission from purchases made through links on this page. NEW YORK (AP) — Taylor Swift has regained control over her entire body of work. In a lengthy note posted to her official website on Friday, Swift announced: 'All of the music I've ever made now belongs to me.' The pop star said she purchased her catalogue of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. She did not disclose the amount. In recent years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her first six albums in an attempt to regain control of her music. 'The best things that have ever been mine … finally actually are.' 'I am happy for her,' Braun said Friday. 'We are thrilled with this outcome and are so happy for Taylor,' Shamrock Capital said in a statement. Swift's rerecordings were instigated by Hybe America CEO Scooter Braun's purchase and sale of her early catalogue and represents Swift's effort to control her own songs and how they're used. Previous 'Taylor's Version' releases have been more than conventional re-recordings, arriving with new 'from the vault' music, Easter eggs and visuals that deepen understanding of her work. She has also released new music, including last year's 'The Tortured Poets Department,' announced during the 2024 Grammys and released during her record-breaking tour. So far, there have been four rerecorded albums, beginning with 'Fearless (Taylor's Version)' and 'Red (Taylor's Version)' in 2021. All four have been massive commercial and cultural successes, each one debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Swift's last re-recording, '1989 (Taylor's Version),' arrived in October 2023, just four months after the release of 'Speak Now (Taylor's Version).' That was the same year Swift claimed the record for the woman with the most No. 1 albums in history. Fans have theorized that 'Reputation (Taylor's Version)' would be next: On May 19, 'Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor's Version)' aired nearly in full during the opening scene of a Season 6 episode of 'The Handmaid's Tale.' Prior to that, the song was teased in 2023's Prime Video limited-series thriller 'Wilderness' and in Apple TV+'s 'The Dynasty: New England Patriots' in 2024. Also in 2023, she contributed 'Delicate (Taylor's Version)' to Prime Video's 'The Summer I Turned Pretty.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. But according to the note shared Friday, Swift says she hasn't 'even rerecorded a quarter of it.' She did say, however, that she has completely rerecorded her self-titled debut album 'and I really love how it sounds now.' Swift writes that both her self-titled debut and 'Reputation (Taylor's Version)' 'can still have their moments to reemerge when the time is right.' Representatives for Swift and HYBE did not immediately respond to request for comment. Love concerts, but can't make it to the venue?
