Ex-Rock Valley College officer awarded settlement for discrimination case

Yahoo28-04-2025

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A former Rock Valley College police officer has reached a settlement with the school over claims that the college discriminated and retaliated against him for military leave.
Vincent Lara was in 2018 after Rock Valley College's Police Department suspected that he was lying on his time sheets while serving as a U.S. Army master sergeant.
The charges against him were dropped in 2019, and his record was expunged.
Lara sued the college in 2022, alleging violations of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act and arguing that he was the subject of harassment that led to a loss of career opportunities and constructive discharge from the military.
Lara is a veteran of the Iraq War and a former military police officer who served with both the Rockford and Winnebago County police departments.
'No service member should face discrimination for answering the call to duty,' Lara said in a press release.
Lara was represented by Maher Legal Services, headed by retired Lt. Col. John Maher.
Under the terms of the settlement, which remain confidential, Rock Valley did not admit to any wrongdoing.

Arrests made outside Federal Building, protesters flood 101 Freeway

The fifth day of anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles has already resulted in demonstrators being ordered by the LAPD to disperse from the downtown L.A. Federal Building. Just after 2 p.m., the Police Department ruled Tuesday's protest an 'unlawful assembly' and issued the dispersal order as protesters assembled on Alameda Street between Aliso and Temple streets. Los Angeles Police Department officials said less-than lethal rounds were authorized and any remaining demonstrators would be taken into custody. Video from Sky 5 showed officers begin making arrests around 3 p.m. Tuesday's gathering comes following another night of protests that resulted in vandalism and some looting in a small portion of downtown L.A., in which more than 100 people were arrested primarily for failure to disperse. Tensions have continued to rise in Los Angeles since last Friday, when an unexpected immigration enforcement operation took place at multiple locations in the area. Those raids have popped up in other neighborhoods in L.A., and expanded to other cities in Southern California. The protests serve as the backdrop for an ongoing war of words pitting California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass against President Donald Trump and his top advisors whose focus remains on high-profile, high-visibility deportations and immigration stings. The L.A. protests have led to nationwide calls for participation, with many slated to take place in major metropolitan areas in the coming days, including Austin, Seattle and Boston. Protests also spread into Orange County when ICE raids were confirmed in Santa Ana. Gov. Newsom has attempted to stop the Trump Administration from unilaterally mobilizing troops in the city center, an effort that hit a roadblock Tuesday afternoon after a federal judge rejected his emergency motion to stop the deployment. KTLA 5 News will bring continuing coverage of these anti-ICE protests throughout the evening and through the remainder of the week, as needed. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 2 year old critically injured in Rock County crash

LA PRAIRIE, Wis. (WTVO) — A two-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries in a three-vehicle collision in Rock County on Sunday afternoon, police said. According to the Rock County Sheriff's Office, around 2:13 p.m., the 2-year-old was a passenger in a GMC Terrain driven by a 25-year-old man from Milton, who was traveling east on US 14. As the GMC began to slow to make a left-hand turn onto S. Henke Road, a Cadillac XT5, driven by a 56-year-old man from Janesville, failed to slow and crashed into the back of the GMC, sending it to spin into the intersection and collide with a Jeep Gladiator that was traveling west. The 2-year-old was evacuated by helicopter to a local hospital. All the other occupants were taken to hospitals for treatment and released. The case is still under investigation, police said. 5 Rockford residents under suspicion after AK-47, other weapons found in Freeport rental house

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — Freeport Police found an AK-47 and multiple other firearms after a disturbance at a rental property, and charges are pending against five people from Rockford. Officials said officers were called to a home in the 1800 block of Indian Springs Court around 10:51 p.m. after guests in the basement area of the home were violating terms of the rental agreement. Officers said a loaded pistol with an extended magazine was in plain view on a living room table when they moved in to clear the individuals gathered within. Once police saw the gun, they detained five individuals, who were identified as residents of Rockford. The owner of the property gave police permission to search the space, and police said they found AK-47 rifle and seven semi-automatics equipped with high capacity magazines, three of which were outfitted with illegal 'switch' devices to make the guns fully automatic. Police sent the weapons to the Illinois State Police Division of Forensic Services, and said charges were pending the result of those findings. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
