Russia's Wagner Group leaves Mali, Africa Corps will stay

The Russia-backed Wagner Group of mercenaries on Friday said that it is leaving Mali after more than three and a half years of fighting Islamist insurgents in the country. Despite the announcement by Wagner, Russia will continue to have its presence in Mali as the Africa Corps, a paramilitary force also controlled by Russia, will continue to stay in the country. The Africa Corps said on its Telegram channel that Wagner's departure would not introduce any changes, and the Russian contingent will remain in Mali. "Mission accomplished. Private Military Company Wagner returns home," the group announced via its channel on the messaging app Telegram. The Wagner Group has been in Mali since the army expelled the French and United Nations troops that were fighting Islamic insurgents for a decade. With waning Western influence in the region, Russia has rushed in to fill the gap and offer assistance. Wagner said that it has successfully brought all of the country's regional centers back under the control of the Malian military junta. The Africa Corps was formed with the Russian Defense Ministry's support after Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and commander Dmitry Utkin led a failed military mutiny against the Russian army leadership and left Russia for Belarus with other mercenaries. Prigozhin was later killed in a plane crash north of Moscow, with US officials suggesting that a bomb or sabotage on board brought down the plane. About 70-80% of the Africa Corps group is made up of former Wagner mercenaries, according to several Telegram chats used by Russian mercenaries seen by Reuters news agency. Around 2,000 mercenaries are deployed in Mali. It is unclear how many are with Wagner and how many are part of the Africa Corps, according to US officials. Edited by: Wesley Dockery

Russia pummels Ukraine's Kharkiv in 'most powerful attack'

Russia launched a massive air assault across Ukraine early Saturday, killing three people in what appeared to be retaliation for recent strikes on its air bases. The Kremlin has intensified attacks in recent weeks as ceasefire talks stall. Ukraine's air force reported intercepting 206 drones and nine missiles using a mix of aircraft, air defenses, and electronic warfare systems. Here are the main developments in Russia's war in Ukraine on Saturday, June 7, 2025: Besides the large Russian aerial assault on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, there were also strikes on Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and the city of Ternopil, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on social media. "To put an end to Russia's killing and destruction, more pressure on Moscow is required, as are more steps to strengthen Ukraine," he said. Russia continues its terror against civilians. At least two people were injured in the Moscow region as a result of the Ukrainian drone attack, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said. Russia's aviation watchdog said the Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports in the Moscow region had temporarily suspended operations to ensure flight safety but that flights had resumed. The Ukrainian military said Russia launched 206 drones, 2 ballistic and seven other missiles against Ukraine overnight. It said its air defense units shot down 87 drones while electronic measures jammed another 80 drones. The intensity of the Russian attacks on Ukraine over the past week has further dampened hopes that the warring sides could reach a ceasefire agreement. Ukraine has offered a 30-day unconditional ceasefire as an attempt to end the war but Russia has continuously rejected such overtures. On Friday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday called for allies to increase pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression. Earlier in the week US President Donald Trump said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, told him Moscow would respond to Ukraine's attack last weekend on Russian military airfields. At least three people were killed and more than 20 injured in a large Russian drone-and-missile attack on Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv. "Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war," Kharkiv's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said on the Telegram messenger app early on Saturday. He said the attack damaged apartment buildings and homes. It comes a day after Russian strikes hit six Ukrainian territories, killing at least six people and injuring about 80 others. Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city and just a few dozen kilometers from the Russian border, has endured relentless shelling throughout more than three years of war. But last night's assault, described by the city's mayor as the "most powerful attack" since the full-scale invasion began, marks a grim new chapter. In this blog, we'll bring you the latest updates on the strike and its aftermath—likely part of Russia's response to Ukraine's daring attack on a Russian bomber fleet last week. We're also monitoring reports of a possible prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia expected later today. If that happens, we will bring you the details here. Stay with DW for real-time news, analysis, and insights from our correspondents on the ground as we continue to cover Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.

Russian drones and missiles target Ukraine's Kharkiv, killing 3, officials say

A large Russian drone-and-missile attack targeted Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv on Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring 21, local officials said. The barrage — the latest in near daily wide scale attacks — included aerial glide bombs that have become part of a fierce Russian onslaught in the three-year war. The intensity of the Russian attacks on Ukraine over the past weeks has further dampened hopes that the warring sides could reach a peace deal anytime soon days — especially after Kyiv recently embarrassed the Kremlin with a surprising drone attack on military airfields deep inside Russia. 5 A large Russian drone-and-missile attack targeted Kharkiv, Ukraine on Saturday. Several other areas in Ukraine were also hit, including the regions of Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and the city of Ternopil, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X. 'To put an end to Russia's killing and destruction, more pressure on Moscow is required, as are more steps to strengthen Ukraine,' he said. Kharkiv's mayor Ihor Terekhov said the attack also damaged 18 apartment buildings and 13 private homes. Terekhov said it was 'the most powerful attack' on the city since the full-scale invasion in 2022. Kharkiv's regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said two districts in the city were struck with three missiles, five aerial glide bombs and 48 drones. Among the injured were two children, a month and a half old boy and a 14-year old girl, he added. 5 Kharkiv's mayor Ihor Terekhov said the attack damaged 18 apartment buildings. REUTERS Trump also said that it might be better to let Ukraine and Russia 'fight for a while' before pulling them apart and pursuing peace. Trump's comments were a remarkable detour from his often-stated appeals to stop the war and signaled he may be giving up on recent peace efforts.
