USD women fall in regular season finale to Denver
VERMILLION, S.D. (USD) — South Dakota battled back from an early deficit to take a lead on Denver heading into the final quarter, but it was the Pioneers who came away with a 63-60 win Saturday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion.
Saturday was Senior Day for the South Dakota basketball program, and four Coyotes were recognized prior to the game. Adara Groman, Sophie Haydon, Alexi Hempe, and Grace Larkins were honored.
Larkins and Hempe attempted to make the most of their final game in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center, combining for 43 points on 16-of-31 shooting. Larkins recorded her 15th double-double in 30 games this season, totaling 25 points and 11 rebounds. Alexi Hempe added 18 points on six three-pointers.
The Pioneers started hot from the field, sinking seven field goals, all three-pointers, in the first quarter to open a 10-point lead. Hempe had three triples in the first quarter to score nine of USD's 13 points in the quarter.
South Dakota responded well in the middle two quarters. On the offensive end, USD converted 13-of-25 field goal attempts and scored 37 points in the second and third quarters combined. On the defensive end, the Coyotes held Denver to 8-of-25 shootings and 23 points.
The switch in momentum cut the Denver lead to just two at the half and after a three-pointer from Cassidy Carson gave the Coyotes a lead to start the third quarter, USD built a four-point lead entering the final quarter.
The Pioneers took the momentum back from the Coyotes in the final quarter of play, sinking a pair of triples and after Larkins tied the game at 60 with less than 35 seconds to play, Denver scored with three seconds left and held on for the win.
With her 25 points, Larkins moved into second in USD history in scoring. Her 2,065 points only trails Mandy Koupal's 2,142 points for the most in a USD uniform.
South Dakota now turns their attention to the Summit League Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. Action begins Wednesday and runs through championship Sunday, March 9.

Deion Sanders admits son Shedeur's NFL draft slide 'hurt'
Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has openly expressed his disappointment over how his son, Shedeur Sanders, was treated during the lead-up to the 2025 NFL draft. Despite being a projected first-round pick, Sanders fell to the fifth round, selected No. 144 by the Cleveland Browns. The elder Sanders attributes the unexpected slide to what he describes as "foolish stuff" and baseless criticisms that emerged during the pre-draft period. Advertisement One significant point of contention was a report suggesting that the former Colorado quarterback performed poorly in interviews, with specific reporting saying Sanders was unprepared. "When you sit up there and say something like he went into a meeting unprepared, like dude, Shedeur Sanders, who's had six different coordinators?" Deion Sanders said on Asante Samuel's podcast last Friday. Deion also said that his son would never wear headphones into a meeting, as one rumor said. "You gonna tell me he had on headphones, Shedeur?" Sanders asked. "Anybody know my son understands he's a professional? Like he's gonna go into a meeting with headphones on?" Advertisement Sanders admitted that the draft slide and everything that followed were not a comfortable feeling, and how the criticisms took an emotional toll on their family. He shared that although the adverse reports hurt, he believes they have instilled a necessary edge in Shedeur, comparing it to the motivation that drove players like Tom Brady, one of his son's most significant mentors. "It did hurt," Sanders said. "It did hurt. But the Bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise. There was some foolish stuff that went on, but you know what? That gave them something that they needed. Like that edge that Tom had." Since the NFL draft, Sanders has avoided the media spotlight that is typically always surrounding the CU head coach. After appearing on Samuel's podcast, it seems like the lack of media was no accident, as Sanders suggested it was related to a health issue. "What I'm dealing with right now is at a whole nother level," Sanders said while stating he is coming back after losing nearly 14 pounds. Two-Way Star Pegged as 'Ambitious' Trade Target for Denver Nuggets
Two-Way Star Pegged as 'Ambitious' Trade Target for Denver Nuggets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Nuggets are entering a pivotal offseason in which their roster is crying out for upgrades. The organization will be under major pressure to properly reopen the championship window around Nikola Jokic. Advertisement It has not been discussed enough, but 2025-26 represents the second-last guaranteed season for the Nuggets having Jokic on the books. The Serbian superstar has a player option for the 2027-28 season. It is certainly not time to panic in Denver. Jokic has given no immediate indicators to suggest the Nuggets superstar wants to leave the franchise. However, continuing to fall short of a championship will surely not be a good look when the best player in the world plays for the Nuggets. Nikola Jokic (right) speaks to an NBA official.© Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images In an effort to push the Nuggets closer to title contention in 2025-26, Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report suggested one ambitious trade target for Denver to chase. The player in question was Derrick White. Advertisement In a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Shams Charania explained that trading Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Sam Hauser are the priorities for the Boston Celtics this season. However, there was a twist. Charania also alluded to the idea that apart from Jayson Tatum, anyone on the Celtics roster can be had for the right price. This is where the Nuggets can come into the picture to push for White. Hughes wrote, "Everybody loves Christian Braun, but the Denver Nuggets need an even more dynamic two-way threat next to Jamal Murray to maximize Nikola Jokić's prime." Hughes continued: "Derrick White is among the best defensive guards in the league and is the kind of three-point shooter whom opponents get yanked off the floor for leaving open. His value as a spacer is far greater than Braun's, and his superiority as a playmaker (4.8 assists per game last year) would give the Nuggets never-before-seen levels of offensive savvy and dynamism." The Bleacher Report writer admitted it would probably take a third team to get this potential deal done. However, at the cost of draft capital, Christian Braun, and rerouting Michael Porter Jr. elsewhere, the Nuggets could land an 'ideal fit.'
