Representative Image LUCKNOW: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Uttar Pradesh arrested five former officials of the District Cooperative Bank in connection with a Rs 92.63 lakh embezzlement and forgery case. This marks a major breakthrough in a financial fraud investigation that began in 2019. The arrests were made under FIR No. 132/2019, registered at Chandpur Police Station under IPC Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 419, 420 (cheating), 467, 468, 471 (forgery and use of forged documents), and 120B (criminal conspiracy). The five individuals arrested were all employed at the District Cooperative Bank during the time of the offence: Former Clerk/Cashier Rajesh Kumar (40), Former Support Staff Chandrashekhar Shukla (37), Former Branch Manager (Chandpur Branch) Jagdish (54), Former Acting Branch Manager Badri Singh (61), and Former Bank Employee Kulwant Singh (47). Out of the total eight accused in the case, Vijay Kumar Ram Nazar died during the course of the investigation. One, Buddhi Sagar, is still absconding, and efforts are ongoing to arrest him. The arrests were made from various locations, including bank premises and residences in Fatehpur and Prayagraj. The operation was carried out by CID Inspector Shiv Kumar Sharma, along with constables Shamim and Naseem. The accused were taken into custody, medically examined, and later presented before a magistrate. According to CID findings, the accused manipulated fixed deposit (FD) records of account holders in the District Cooperative Bank, forging documents to siphon off a total of Rs 92,63,097.50. The financial irregularities were discovered during an audit and later confirmed during CID's detailed investigation. The accused reportedly used their positions within the bank to bypass standard verification protocols. Arrest memos were prepared at each location, and family members of the accused were duly informed via telephone, in compliance with Supreme Court and human rights guidelines. DG, CID, Dipesh Juneja, announced a cash reward for the arresting team in recognition of their successful operation in cracking a complex financial fraud involving multiple accused and years of cover-up. 'The case has highlighted systemic vulnerabilities in cooperative bank operations and the ease with which financial records were manipulated without detection. The CID has recommended stricter financial oversight, frequent audits, and technological safeguards to prevent future irregularities,' said DG Juneja. Further investigation is ongoing to identify any additional beneficiaries or internal collusion in the fraudulent transactions.
