Kuldeep could be the X-factor for India: Ex-ENG cricketer Monty Panesar

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has suggested that India should consider replacing Shardul Thakur with Kuldeep Yadav for the second Test against England in Birmingham, where spin is expected to play a more significant role. India suffered a defeat in the opening Test at Headingley as England successfully chased 371, powered by Ben Duckett's 149.
'Kuldeep could be the X-factor for India'
Panesar believes Edgbaston's pitch offers enough spin for India to benefit from playing both Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, with the latter bringing a much-needed attacking edge. 'Kuldeep could be the X-factor India need. The surface in Birmingham does tend to help spinners, and Kuldeep has the ability to trouble batters even without much turn,' Panesar told PTI.
Kuldeep's record backs up Panesar's point, the left-arm wrist-spinner has 56 wickets in 13 Tests at an average of 22.16. Comparatively, Thakur has claimed 33 wickets from 12 Tests with a higher average and strike rate. Thakur's limited contribution with both bat and ball at Leeds, including 2 wickets for 89 runs in 16 overs, raises questions about his current value in English conditions.
Panesar argued that if Thakur isn't going to bowl extended spells, his inclusion makes little sense. While some may debate replacing Jadeja with Kuldeep, Panesar believes the better option would be to field both spinners, Jadeja as the containing bowler and Kuldeep as the strike option.
'Jadeja bowls quickly and economically, but Kuldeep brings a real threat. However, Kuldeep can't really be used to contain. That's why India might opt for two spinners, with Jadeja playing the holding role and Kuldeep going on the attack,' said Panesar.
Panesar, who played a crucial role in England's 2012 Test series victory in India, concluded that Kuldeep's current form and ability to challenge batters on flatter pitches should earn him a spot in the XI for the second Test.

After Historic Knock, Rishabh Pant Gets All-Time High ICC Test Ranking Of...

Rishabh Pant reached a career-high seventh in ICC Test rankings after twin centuries against England. India's dynamic wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant achieved a career-high seventh position in the latest ICC Test rankings for batters on Wednesday, following his twin centuries in the series opener against England in Leeds. India's new Test captain Shubman Gill advanced five places to 20th overall after scoring a century in the first innings of the match, which India lost by five wickets despite setting England a challenging target of 371. Pant, who became only the second wicketkeeper to hit two hundreds in the same match during the first Test of the five-match series, climbed one spot in the rankings. Until the 27-year-old Pant joined him, Zimbabwe's Andy Flower was the only wicketkeeper to have scored two centuries in the same Test match. Rishabh Pant scored 134 and 118 in the thrilling Leeds Test that England won by five wickets. There was little change in the rankings for Test bowlers, with India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah maintaining his top spot following another five-wicket haul in the Headingley Test. Meanwhile, Ben Duckett, who was named Player of the Match for his scores of 62 and 149 in England's victory, rose five places to eighth in the rankings. Duckett's teammates Ollie Pope (up three spots to 19th) and Jamie Smith (up eight places to 27th) also made significant progress. England skipper Ben Stokes gained three places to move up to fifth in the list for Test all-rounders following solid performances with both bat and ball in the same game. The drawn first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh saw several players making gains in the latest batters' rankings. Mushfiqur Rahim led the way, following his innings of 163 in Galle. Rahim gained 11 spots to move to 28th for Test batters, while teammate Najmul Hossain Shanto jumped an impressive 21 places to reach 29th on the same list after scoring a pair of centuries in the same match. Taken Over From Kohli, Rohit Sharma He Didnt Quite Have That On Field Aura: Nasser Hussain Shares His Verdict On Shubman Gills Captaincy

Former English cricketer turned commentator Nasser Hussain shared his verdict on India's newly appointed test captain Shubman Gill's captaincy after India was defeated by five wickets against The Three lions at first test of the five match test series. England successfully chased a target of 371 in the fourth innings at Headingley, leeds powered by Ben Duckett's 149 and Joe Root's unbeaten 53. Hussain while agreeing to India's former head coach Ravi Shastri stated that Gill lacked the aura of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharm and looked lackluster on the field. Shubman took the baton from Rohit Sharma who called it quits in this format, before Sharma India was led by Virat Kohli in this format. "I thought I saw someone just finding his way, honestly. You've got to be very careful in the first Test match, the people he's taken over from, Kohli, and then Rohit Sharma. I thought he didn't quite have that on-field aura as the names I mentioned there. You look down on those two previous names, and you immediately see who was in charge of India. I looked down from the press box, the commentary position, there were a lot of captains; it was a bit captaincy by committee, which can happen in your early days as a leader because you're still senior players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul want to try and help you out as much as possible. I thought he followed the ball a lot. I thought he was reactive as opposed to proactive," he said. Nasser also called out the captain and the seniors players in the team for not talking to Ravindra Jadeja who was attacked by English batters in the fourth innings with reverse sweeps which the Indian team had no answers for. The commentator also criticized Jadeja for not exploiting the rough made on the fifth day pitch. "A word with Jadeja, maybe as a young captain, to go to such an experienced spinner, and go, you do know the rough is out there. Ravi Shastri and Mark Butcher are up there, going, show us where that ball is pitching, and it was pitching nowhere near the rough. Ravi was saying, a bit slow, a bit wide, bowl in the rough. I was surprised that not one of the senior players or captains went to Jadeja and said, Can we go a little bit wider. But Ravi's right, they lost the game for two things that he couldn't control," he added. The second test between the two teams will be played from July 2nd at Edgbaston, Birmingham. India would like to fix their mistakes and level the series going forward. Shubman who became the 37th Test captain of India joined the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and KL rahul as the Indian captains to lose their first test as captain.

Kuldeep for Shardul could be the only change at Edgbaston as India eye parity

IANS Kupdeep Yadav (File Photo) India head coach Gautam Gambhir defended captain Shubman Gill's decision to under bowl Shardul Thakur in the series opener against England but it would be tough to justify his selection in the second Test beginning on July his first Test since December 2023, Shardul was under-utilised in the pace department and was rather underwhelming with the bat, totalling five off 20 balls across two were raised about his presence in the playing eleven ahead of a specialist bowler when he rolled his arm over for six overs in the first innings before bowling 10 in the second. Like he often does, Shardul did pick a couple of wickets out of nowhere to raise hopes of an Indian comeback on day five but the bite in his bowling was missing. He alongside the likes of Prasidh Krishna offered too many loose balls, lacking consistency to test the opposition batters. With India losing the game having controlled for a major part of five days, there is no need to ring the alarm bells but a few changes are certain in the playing eleven for the Edgbaston Test.. Experts cried out for Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion in the series opener and now he is most likely to replace Shardul with the surface expected to aid the spinners in Birmingham.."Kuldeep needs to be there. There is no point playing with four pacers. Either of Shardul or Prasidh can make way for him," former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar told PTI. There is a tendency to play with four pace options in England but with dry conditions expected for the majority of the English summer, there is a case of playing Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja in the same eleven. Having said that, Jadeja too will under the scanner having not gotten a lot out of the rough on day five at Headingley. "Kuldeep Yadav has to come back. I'm sorry to say, but Shardul Thakur has to go out," former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar said on JioStar."That is one change India will have to make. As for Nitish Kumar Reddy -- I backed him for the first Test purely based on what he did in Australia."It's an unpopular choice, because when he comes in, the balance does get affected a bit. He won't quite bowl like a fourth seamer, so India need to take a hard call: even in English conditions, they must go with quality bowlers. If that means playing two spinners, so be it." Following England's record chase of 371 at Headingley, Gambhir was asked about Shardul's under-utilisation and he understandably came in support of the captain. "Sometimes captain goes with his instincts and Ravindra Jadeja gave us control in the first innings, that was important and we could rotate our three pacers at the other end. "We know what is Shardul's quality and that is why he is playing for India and is in the dressing room. Just because he is the fourth seamer does not necessarily mean that he has to be brought ahead of a spinner. A captain went by his instinct and depending on surface, we were playing," said changes in the bowling line-up are unlikely with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah expected to play with a long enough gap between the first and the second Test. Uncapped Arshdeep Singh is likely to warm the bench again with the management expected to persist with Prasidh, who bowled much better and fuller in the second essay and Mohammed Siraj, who is not able to extract a lot out of his stock wobbled seam delivery of late.
