Goldbridge: This Man Utd win means more than people will understand
Man Utd's Comeback Win Over Lyon: A Night That Defied Belief
Man Utd's Resurrection in Extra Time
In a match that will echo through the corridors of Old Trafford for years, Manchester United pulled off a breathtaking 5-4 extra-time comeback win over Lyon to reach the Europa League semi-finals. The United Stand podcast, hosted by the ever-passionate Mark Goldbridge, captured every drop of emotion from this astonishing night.
'I feel like Ric Flair,' Goldbridge exclaimed at the start of his match reaction, already lost in the drama of a game that swung wildly between despair and euphoria. From cruising at 2-0 to staring down the barrel at 4-2 against ten men, United rose from the dead in the final five minutes – a feat Goldbridge likened to Easter weekend resurrection. 'We were Ned Stark FC… dead. Then we go Jon Snow FC… we're alive again,' he said.
Supporters' Catharsis in the Chaos
Throughout the episode, Goldbridge didn't hold back on the rollercoaster of emotions fans endured. 'I'm in shock. I was living that nightmare that we're out,' he confessed, admitting there was 'no part of me at 4-2 that thought we were coming back.'

The podcast resonated particularly with younger fans, with Goldbridge poignantly addressing those who hadn't experienced United's 1999 Treble-winning magic. 'You've probably witnessed about 5 or 10% of what we felt that night… but it still means something,' he reflected. For a generation deprived of European glories, this night was a rare taste of vintage United drama.
Praise, Passion, and Perspective
Goldbridge's praise for key players was unfiltered. 'Build a statue for Harry Maguire,' he declared, while dubbing Casemiro 'man of the match' for his match-saving penalty win and two assists. The Brazilian's performance, especially across 120 minutes, was lauded as 'incredible'.

Youngster Mainoo also earned admiration for his composure: 'The finish is fantastic… he's a learner driver but that was frighteningly good.' Even manager Ruben Amorim, whose position had come under scrutiny, was passionately defended. 'He coached a win. There's no doubt in my mind,' Goldbridge asserted. 'He's the closest thing we've got in that football club to you and me.'

Yet amidst the joy, Goldbridge hinted at looming concerns. 'There are huge issues… but I want to revisit them at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.' It was a night for celebration, not cynicism.
Bigger Than a Trophy?
Perhaps most striking was Goldbridge's insistence on the greater significance of the result. 'If we go on and win this Europa League… this game will become even more historical than you think it is now,' he said. 'It keeps a dream alive.' With United's Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, this wasn't just a quarter-final – it was financial salvation, reputational rescue, and emotional reward.
As he summed up: 'Football isn't about just winning the final. It's about the incredible things that happen there… Tonight was one of the most emotional streams I've ever done.'

Amsterdam-based Piece of Magic Entertainment's anime division has unveiled a 2025 distribution slate that puts theatrical exhibition at the center of its European expansion strategy, with the crown jewel being a 4K restoration of cyberpunk classic 'Akira.' The POM Anime lineup spans both prestigious legacy titles and breakout contemporary properties: 'Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye,' 'Akira,' 'Grave of the Fireflies' and 'Lupin the IIIrd The Movie: The Immortal Bloodline.' All four titles will receive theatrical releases across multiple European territories, signaling the distributor's confidence in the big-screen appeal of anime content. More from Variety 'Lupin' Writer Tony Saint Working on Action-Thriller Series 'King's Ransom' Set in Elite Boarding School (EXCLUSIVE) John Lennon and Yoko Ono Documentary 'One to One' Lands Sweeping European Distribution Deal With Piece of Magic (EXCLUSIVE) Netflix, Max and Prime Video Negotiate With French Film Guilds for Earlier Access to New Releases After Disney+ Deal First out of the gate is the anticipated Season 2 theatrical launch of 'Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye,' hitting cinemas June 7-8 across 12 territories, with Germany and Austria following June 10. Building on the success of 'Dan Da Dan: First Encounter' in 2024, audiences will get the first three episodes of Season 2 plus exclusive 10-minute bonus content available only in theaters. The rollout spans Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Poland, Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, and Kosovo. POM Anime has partnered with Kodansha to license the 4K restoration of 1988's 'Akira' across 20 countries. The July 16 release date carries special significance for fans as 'Akira Day' — commemorating the fictional date when Tokyo's destruction sparked World War III in the film's storyline. This marks the first-ever theatrical release in several markets, expanding POM's 2023 'Akira' footprint from 12 to 20 territories, now including the Nordics and Baltics alongside Poland, Romania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Greece, Cyprus, Hungary, Albania, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Studio Ghibli's emotional masterpiece 'Grave of the Fireflies' will receive a 15-territory summer release across Benelux, the Baltics, and Eastern European markets. The World War II sibling story continues to resonate as what POM calls 'a poignant testament to the human cost of war.' Rounding out the slate is 'Lupin the IIIrd The Movie: The Immortal Bloodline,' marking the first new 2D Lupin feature in nearly three decades. Directed by Takeshi Koike ('Redline'), the Q4 2025 release continues POM's successful partnership with TMS Entertainment following last year's 'Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro' European run. 'Our slate blends the prestige of timeless classics like 'Akira' and 'Grave of the Fireflies' with the excitement of fresh, breakouts like 'Dan Da Dan' and 'Lupin the Third,'' said Caspar Nadaud, CEO and founder of POM Anime and Piece of Magic Entertainment. 'With multi-territory, theatrical rights for Europe, we're committed to offering audiences the chance to tap into the rich, global appeal of these iconic properties and to be at the forefront of exciting new premium anime content.' Cristiano Ronaldo by the numbers as he auditions for the Club World Cup
Evergreen and still setting records at 40 years of age. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to deliver at the highest levels of international soccer after guiding Portugal to the final of the Nations League. Ronaldo captained the team and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Germany in their semifinal on Wednesday to set up a showdown Sunday with Spain. The goal – Ronaldo's 137th for Portugal – extended his record as the leading scorer in men's international soccer. He broke the record as a 36-year-old by scoring twice in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2021. That took his tally to 111 goals in 180 games for Portugal, surpassing the previous mark by Iran's Ali Daei. Before tucking away Nuno Mendes' cross for a tap-in against Germany, Ronaldo had gone close with a header, while he was also just inches from breaking the deadlock after the halftime break. His performance was a timely reminder for any teams playing at the Club World Cup that he's potentially available to join them for the tournament starting in the United States on June 14. FIFA president Gianni Infantino previously suggested Ronaldo could switch to one of the 32 participating clubs because of a unique transfer window created for the tournament. Ronaldo, who's still contracted to Saudi team Al-Nassr until the end of June, has been linked with several of the particpating clubs, including Brazil's Palmeiras and Wydad of Morocco, even though that club is banned by FIFA from registering new signings. A switch to Al-Nassr's bitter Riyadh rival Al-Hilal – the one Saudi club that qualified – has been mooted as a short-term solution to having Ronaldo play at the Club World Cup, where his great rival Lionel Messi will be playing with Inter Miami. FIFA would welcome the boost Ronaldo's presence can provide for ticket sales at the tournament, but such a switch to a bitter local rival for a short period would be unthinkable for players in Europe's leagues. Both Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are among the four big Saudi clubs backed by the country's Public Investment Fund, which has a 75% stake in each. The PIF may put the national interest above that of Al-Nassr and strive to keep Ronaldo representing Saudi interests at the Club World Cup. On Thursday, FIFA announced PIF as an ' official partner ' of the Club World Cup. Saudi state money is also effectively funding the tournament's broadcasting deal that has largely backed its $1 billion prize fund being shared among the participants.
