Indiana University closes on building in Washington, D.C. How much did it pay?
Indiana University has purchased a building in Washington, D.C., for $17.5 million where it intends to provide programming and housing for students.
The eight-story building at 1619 Massachusetts Ave. NW has an assessed value of $43 million, according to Washington property records, and sits along Embassy Row, a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue where hundreds of international embassy offices are located.

IU spokesman Mark Bode confirmed the IU Foundation had a contract to purchase the building from Johns Hopkins University last October, but at the time declined to comment on the building's purpose. The building was purchased by the IU Foundation on March 14, according to property records.
In a press release, IU said the building will 'bring together and expand IU's ongoing academic programs and business operations in the nation's capital.'The news release stated the building had been 'in the works' since President Pamela Whitten took office in 2021.
IU Bloomington has at least four Washington, D.C.-based programs, including the Hamilton Lugar School's Global Leadership Forum, the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs' D.C. Accelerator and Washington Leadership Program, and a Washington-based internship in the political science department. IU Indianapolis' O'Neill School also has a Washington Leadership Program.
In the release, IU hinted that the university's multiple campuses may expand programming in Washington.
'Each campus will be encouraged to engage through programming and opportunities spanning a few days to entire semesters,' the press release said. 'Additional plans for the building's use and IU's presence in the capital are expected to develop over the coming academic year and beyond.'
IU said the building will provide housing to IU students who previously had no dedicated housing arrangement in the capital. Washington and neighboring city Arlington, Virginia, are among the 10 most expensive cities in which to rent in the country, according to rental search company Zumper's National Rent Report.
In an October presentation to the Dupont Circle advisory neighborhood commission, an attorney for the university said IU plans to have approximately 40 beds split evenly between the building's sixth and seventh floors, with communal hall bathrooms on each floor.
IU said the building is expected to be ready for occupancy in early 2026, pending approval from the Board of Trustees on a lease agreement between the university and the IU Foundation.
The next Board of Trustees meeting is on June 12 and 13 at IU Bloomington.

THE INTERVIEW: Can the U.S. grow its way out of debt? Economist skeptical of Trump's big bill
FOX 2 - The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill," a sweeping fiscal package extending significant tax cuts, reducing federal spending, and promising to jumpstart economic growth. Now the bill will be considered in the U.S. Senate. Republican Senator Ron Johnson and Elon Musk have emerged as two of the most forceful critics of the "Big Beautiful Bill," though from different vantage points. Johnson, a staunch fiscal conservative, has rejected the current version of the bill, warning that it would skyrocket the deficit and lock in unsustainable spending levels. He's demanded a return to pre-pandemic spending and line-by-line budget cuts. Elon Musk has been even more incendiary, calling the bill a "disgusting abomination." He warned it could trigger a recession, undermines fiscal efficiency, and represents everything he tried to reform during his involvement in government tech initiatives. The national debt stands at more than $36 trillion, and interest payments alone topping $1 trillion last year, the question of whether America can grow its way out of debt has taken center stage. Proponents, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, argue that the bill's tax cuts and pro-growth policies will unlock a surge in economic activity, allowing the U.S. to expand its way out of red ink. Johnson says the projections of the Congressional Budget Office are too low and insists the bill will unleash greater GDP growth than government estimates predict. But Dr. Brian Marks, a senior lecturer of economics and business analytics at the University of New Haven, sees it differently. "All I can say is hope springs eternal," Marks tells Hilary Golston. "To date, there is no evidence to suggest that the level of tax cuts … if we look back at Trump 1.0 and exclude Covid … produced extraordinary growth. The deficit increased by close to $2 trillion on that alone." Marks questioned whether the current economic environment supports the optimistic growth projections Johnson and others have embraced. "Based on the data before me, and the behavior of the past as maybe being a prologue for the future, I'm not as confident we're going to see the level of growth the Speaker is suggesting." Adding to the skepticism are rising borrowing costs. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note now sits around 4.5%, a rate that may benefit investors but poses a significant burden for taxpayers. "It's terrible for America because we are paying so much more on our debt," I noted to Marks during our conversation. "Our debt service in 2024 was a trillion dollars. Even in paying back the debt, America is behind." Marks agrees that the impact will be felt most acutely by ordinary Americans. "When it comes to the ordinary citizen, it's about how this hits day to day. Interest on credit cards, mortgages, auto loans… all going up. That's what's going to hit the consumer." The bill's reliance on new tariffs to offset revenue losses is another flashpoint. While the administration has argued that tariffs will generate billions, Marks is doubtful. "I'm not particularly confident. The estimate to suggest that tariffs will make up this shortfall in some sense is Pollyannaish," he said. With the bill now heading to the Senate, the debate is far from over. For now, the question remains: Can America truly grow its way out of debt, or is the nation poised for an even larger fiscal reckoning?

JSW Steel's crude steel production rises 8% YoY to 22.73 lakh tonnes in May 2025

The company's cumulative crude steel production for FY26 up to May stood at 47.56 lakh tonnes, marking a 13% rise from 42.18 lakh tonnes recorded in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Within the overall figures, Indian operations contributed 21.94 lakh tonnes in May 2025, up from 20.13 lakh tonnes a year ago, representing a 9% growth. Cumulative production from Indian operations reached 45.93 lakh tonnes in the current fiscal, compared to 40.68 lakh tonnes last year, also indicating a 13% increase. JSW Steel's US-based Ohio facility produced 0.79 lakh tonnes during the month, slightly lower than the 0.85 lakh tonnes produced in May 2024. Year-to-date output from this unit reached 1.63 lakh tonnes, up from 1.50 lakh tonnes over the same period last year. The company reported 80% capacity utilisation for its Indian operations in May 2025, affected by a planned maintenance shutdown at the Dolvi plant's blast furnace.
