RCB to be sold? Indian politician refutes rumours of buying IPL team

Khaleej Timesa day ago

Rumours swirled around the potential sale of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have stirred excitement and speculation in cricket and business circles alike. However, both the team's parent company, Diageo India, and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have categorically dismissed the claims.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, on Thursday, refuted rumours that he had bought the RCB franchise, saying that he is not a mad man. Speaking to ANI, Shivakumar said that he had received offers to join the management team, but he doesn't have the time for this.
"I am not a mad man. I've been a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association since my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge," the Karnataka DyCM said.
On June 10, Diageo India, the Indian arm of global beverage giant Diageo Plc, issued an official clarification to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), addressing recent media reports. Company secretary Mital Sanghvi stated, "The company would like to clarify that the aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussion."

On June 4, the stampede that occurred during celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations claimed 11 lives.
Following the Bengaluru stampede, the Karnataka government suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station on June 5 and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident.
Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah dismissed the BJP's demand for his resignation over the Bengaluru stampede, accusing the party of "doing politics in everything."
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned why the BJP had not demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath when a stampede occurred during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year.
"40-50 people died in a stampede at Kumbh Mela. Did they demand the chief minister's resignation then? A bridge collapsed on the day of the inauguration, and 140 people died. Did they demand the Prime Minister's resignation then?" Siddaramaiah asked while talking to reporters here.
Earlier today, the Karnataka High Court reserved its order on a petition filed by RCB's marketing head, Nikhil Sosale, seeking interim relief on the grounds that his arrest in alleged connection with the Bengaluru stampede was illegal.
The High Court reserved the order for June 12 at 2:30 pm.

Ahmedabad plane crash: India launches investigation into tragedy

[Editor's Note: Follow KT's live blog for all the latest updates on the Ahmedabad plane crash.] India's aviation minister said Thursday a formal investigation had been opened into the cause of the deadly air crash of a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that killed at least 260 people. "Following the tragic incident in Ahmedabad, a formal investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB)," Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said in a statement, saying the government probe followed protocols set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). At the crash site, search teams worked into the early hours of Friday scouring the wreckage for clues — as well as to locate the black box flight recorders, which should provide information on the plane's final moments. Air India said the passengers included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals and a Canadian. Two pilots and 10 cabin crew were also aboard. Police said at least 260 people had been killed, including 19 people on the ground, but one passenger is believed to have survived. UK, US offer help The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has formally offered to help India. Investigators with the US National Transportation Safety Board will also assist on site. US planemaker Boeing said it was ready to support Air India and was "working to gather more information" on the incident. New Delhi's government said it was also setting up "a high-level committee comprising experts from multiple disciplines to examine the matter" and to "work to strengthen aviation safety and prevent such incidents in future", Kinjarapu added.

Australia fight back in WTC final after Rabada's havoc

Mitchell Starc led Australia's recovery as the defending champions fought back with the ball against South Africa on the first day of the World Test Championship final at Lord's on Wednesday. Australia were dismissed for just 212 after South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss in overcast, bowler-friendly, conditions, with spearhead quick Kagiso Rabada taking 5-51. But at stumps South Africa had slumped to 43-4 in reply, a deficit of 169 runs. Given the strength of both teams' pace attacks, the key question was always likely to be which side could put enough runs on the scoreboard. Australia's total certainly looked a lot healthier when left-arm quick Starc had Aiden Markram playing on for a duck before dismissing Ryan Rickelton (16) to leave South Africa floundering at 19-2. Novice number three Wiaan Mulder was reprieved on one when wicketkeeper Alex Carey dropped a sitter off Starc. But he added just five more runs before he was bowled by Australia captain Pat Cummins, having taken 44 balls to make six. It took Bavuma 31 balls to score his first runs, a two off Josh Hazlewood greeted with raucous cheers by South Africa fans at Lord's. But shortly before the close, Hazlewood bowled Tristan Stubbs. David Bedingham ended the day's play with consecutive boundaries off Cummins to be eight not out, with Bavuma unbeaten on three. Rampant Rabada: Australia were in desperate trouble in the early overs in London, reduced to 16-2 after losing Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green in a single Rabada over. Khawaja fell for a 20-ball duck in the seventh over, edging Rabada to Bedingham at first slip. Three balls later 12-1 became 16-2 when Green nicked low to second slip, where Markram held a superb diving catch. Rabada had now taken two wickets for four runs in four balls. The 30-year-old, who has more than 300 Test wickets, is playing his first Test after serving a one-month ban for cocaine use earlier this year. Australia have struggled to find an opening partner for Khawaja since David Warner's retirement 17 months ago, with Marnus Labuschagne the latest batsman tried out. The 30-year-old, without a Test century for nearly two years, battled hard for 17 off 56 balls before being dismissed by classic fast-bowling from towering left-armer Marco Jansen. Australia had been in similar trouble in the 2023 final against India across London at the Oval, only for Steve Smith and Travis Head to both score hundreds as they turned the match in their favour. Head, however, could only manage 11 before he glanced Jansen, with Kyle Verreynne holding an excellent diving one-handed catch. But star batsman Smith (66) and all-rounder Beau Webster (72) repaired the damage with a fifth-wicket stand of 79. Yet in what could to be prove a key moment in the match, Webster would have been lbw to Rabada for eight if South Africa had reviewed an original not out decision.
