Mother's plea after daughter survives head-on crash in the Pilbara
Michelle Leslie was on the other side of Australia in Ipswich, Queensland, watching her nephew's AFL match when she received the news her daughter was involved in a head-on collision near Roebourne.
Jasmine Whitfield, 24, was in the car with friends when the
Toyota Prado collided with a Toyota HiLux
on North West Coastal Highway on May 23, claiming the lives of both drivers, 29-year-old Dakota Tahi Tahi and a 21-year-old man.
'I was just in shock when I heard the news,' Ms Leslie said.
'I was panicking, just in disbelief, all the emotions — my family were with me when I received the call. Not knowing if she was all right was what made it harder.
'The crash happened that afternoon. We didn't find out until night time.
'Our deepest love and condolences for Dakota's family.'
Ms Leslie is calling for financial support through
GoFundMe
, so she can be at her daughter's side during her recovery in the trauma unit at Royal Perth Hospital.
'It's hard because I don't have leave from work, so this is why we've put the GoFundMe out, to raise funds just to help with Jasmine; if she needs things and getting me to and from the hospital. Accommodation is a big factor too, it's expensive,' she said.
'Any help I can get, we both really appreciate this, because I'm going to extend my stay from four weeks to 10-12 weeks to be with Jasmine through all of her appointments.
'I've got no income coming in, as of next week.'
Three other female passengers in the Prado were injured, including 19-year-old Manawa Hinaki, who was also flown to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries.
The collision brings the number of road deaths between Karratha and Roebourne to four in 2025 so far, compared with two in 2024.
Teenagers Dennis Hicks, 16, and Ethan Howard, 17, died in a motorbike crash near Cleaverville Road in March this year.
The Pilbara community is now calling for better safety measures on the highway.
In a statement, a Main Roads spokesperson said in recent years, they had delivered a range of upgrades to improve safety on North West Coastal Highway, including two overtaking lanes, widening, and installing an audible edge and centre lines on the 38km section between Roebourne and Karratha.
'When travelling on regional roads, it's critical all road users plan ahead, manage fatigue and distractions, and be aware of the road conditions when travelling long distances,' the spokesperson said.
'As with all fatal crashes, a police investigation will be undertaken.
'In accordance with Main Roads' crash investigation policy, the agency will also undertake its own fatal crash investigation to determine if any road environment factors contributed to the severity of this crash.'
Pilbara District Acting Supt Matt Froude urged all motorists to drive safely at all times.
'We continue to remind motorists to always drive safely on our roads right across the State, and keep in mind the wellbeing of others,' he said.
'WA Police continue to see crashes from drivers that fall victim to the 'fatal five' across the State, which continue to be overrepresented in fatal and serious crashes.
'These are speeding, impaired driving (alcohol/drugs), non-use of restraints/helmets, distracted driving (use of mobile phones), and fatigue.
'Our officers do not want to knock on your door to deliver devastating and life-changing news about the loss of a loved one on our roads. Please take care on our roads so everyone can arrive at their destination safely.'

Donations pour in for fundraiser set up in memory of Pheobe Bishop with money set to be devoted to support community services
A fundraiser has been set up in memory of 17-year-old Pheobe Bishop, after police located human remains in their search for the missing teenager. However, instead of the money going towards the family of Pheobe, the touching decision has been made to direct the money towards an important cause in what has been described as a way to make a "real impact" in honour of her. The teenager was reported missing more than three weeks ago in the regional Queensland town of Gin Gin after she mysteriously vanished hours before she was due to catch a flight from Bundaberg Airport to Western Australia to visit her boyfriend. Detectives on Thursday charged her housemates James Wood, 34, and his partner Tanika Bromley, 33, with Pheobe's alleged murder and tampering of her body. Then about 24 hours later, police confirmed they had found suspected human remains in an area near Good Night Scrub National Park on Friday afternoon. The fundraiser was set up by family friend Tracey Berends, who said it has beencreated in order to "raise awareness for missing persons and children". "On May 15 2025, our world was shattered when Pheobe Bishop, a bright, kind-hearted, and deeply loved young woman, was taken from us far too soon. Her life was tragically cut short, and those responsible are now in custody," a message on the official Gofundme page reads. "After speaking with Pheobe's family, we have decided to honour her memory in a way that reflects the compassion and light she brought into the lives of so many. "This GoFundMe has been created as a way for our community to donate and support the services like the SES who volunteer their time without reimbursement and have played an integral part of finding missing loved ones in our community." The fundraiser has also pledged to donate to the YSchool in Bundaberg where Pheobe attended. Pheobe's mother Kylie Johnson posted on Facebook that the fundraiser was "supported by the family". "Everyone is wanting to assist and this is how we can give back in honour of Phee," she said. Ms Berends said it was "more than a fundraiser" and that all funds raised "will be donated to these carefully chosen community groups that work to support our Wide Bay community". "This is more than a fundraiser—this is a tribute to a beautiful life, and a call to action to protect the most vulnerable in our communities. "Please donate if you are able, and share this campaign so we can make a real impact in Phoebe's honour. Let us come together, in grief and in hope, to ensure Pheobe's light continues to shine." In the hours since the fundraiser was published, more than 50 people have already donated, while more than $2800 has been raised towards the $17,000 target.

Umpire-on-the-run rushed to hospital after serious car crash
Former AFL umpire Troy Pannell has reportedly had life-saving surgery after a car crash on a country road in Victoria. Pannell is wanted by the law and only yesterday there was mystery surrounding his whereabouts after he failed to show up at the Supreme Court. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Troy Pannell fails to show up in court. Now it has been reported that he is in a serious condition at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He was reportedly 'rushed to Melbourne' after a 'single vehicle crash' on Friday night. 'It's understood Pannell's car ran off the road in rural western Victoria on Friday and hit a tree, with no other vehicle nearby at the time,' the News Corp report said. Pannell is being pursued by his former employer, SeaRoad Shipping, who allege he defrauded them over $8.7 million. The 48-year-old's name was called out at Victoria's Supreme Court on Friday but he was not in attendance. It's the second time he has missed a scheduled court appearance and arrest warrant was issued to bring the former AFL umpire before Justice Andrew Watson in a civil case. Only yesterday the court believed he had left Victoria and was possibly heading to South Australia. Officers had been instructed to keep him in custody until the next hearing. Pannell officiated 291 AFL games from 2005 to 2018 — including a controversial 2016 match where he awarded 17 free kicks to the eventual flag-winning Bulldogs and only one to Adelaide during a regular season game. It has been alleged that Pannell generated invoices to pay a company named Independent Container Surveyors & Assessors (ICSA) to repair damaged shipping containers, with each 'repair' costing SeaRoad $800 to $900. It is also alleged that Pannell had authority to approve purchase orders up to the value of $5000, and it was only when a finance manager noticed ICSA was not registered for GST that suspicions were raised. SeaRoad alleges ICSA did no work to repair any containers and never checked the work had been done as it trusted Pannell to follow the proper processes of the company. 'SeaRoad is satisfied you have committed serious misconduct. You have been the sole shareholder and director of ICSA from 2010 to date. We find your response that you did not know you held these positions to be fanciful,' a letter from SeaRoad to Pannell, tendered in the civil court case, read. A forensic search has also revealed that Pannell apologised to his wife Lynise Woodgate in an email sent in October, 2023. The email was titled 'Love U', and Pannell wrote: 'I'm so sorry for everything …. I don't know (w)here 3 years have gone, we have been so busy …. And had I realised everything I am feeling right now, 3 years ago … … I would not feel the way I do today. 'Hopefully your day is not too stressful u there, and enjoy your night.'
