Real Madrid great Raúl ending his academy role to coach elsewhere
MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid great Raúl González is leaving his role as a coach in the club's youth academy.
The 47-year-old Raúl spent seven years in the academy and coached several youth teams in the 2018-19 season. He helped the under-19s win the Youth League in 2020.
'Raúl has informed the club of his decision to end his time as a coach at our youth academy,' Madrid said on Tuesday.
'Real Madrid is proud to have had one of the greatest legends in our history and world football as a coach and trainer at our youth academy. Raúl also exemplifies all the values of Real Madrid. Values that he has also passed on as a coach.'
Raúl said he enjoyed the job, which made him 'grow as a professional and as a person.'
'I want to thank the club of my life for the opportunity it has given me,' Raúl said. 'A new phase begins in my life as a coach outside of this club, with the certainty that I'll eventually return to this place that will always be my home.'
Raúl starred for Madrid as a player from the late 1990s until 2010, and with Spain until 2006.
'Raúl will always be in the hearts of all madridistas, and Real Madrid will always be his home,' the club added.
Madrid's B team is set to be coached by former player Álvaro Arbeloa.

Florida (39-21) advances to Sunday's elimination game against the loser of Saturday's semifinal between Coastal Carolina and East Carolina. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — As Oregon's catcher, Emma Cox knows All-American Lyndsey Grein throws lots of filthy pitches. Grein outdid herself Friday night at the Women's College World Series when she kicked up a clod of dirt with her cleats during her pitching motion against Mississippi. The clod was in the air when it was struck by the ball, breaking it into pieces. The 67-mph pitch ended up in Cox's glove and one of those dirt chunks in her eyes. She immediately came out of her crouch and went to her knees, reaching for her eyes through her mask. She was able to stay in the game. 'I thought it was dirt from my glove that must have hit me,' Cox said in an interview with an Oregon in-house reporter Saturday. 'And I was like, 'OK, whatever.' And then the umpire was like, 'No, it was a bug that flew into it and then the ball hit you, or the bug hit you in the face.' ' The dirt-in-the-eye pitch was one of those freak moments that probably couldn't be repeated, akin to Randy Johnson hitting a bird with a pitch in 2001. 'I didn't believe it until I saw the video,' Cox said in the interview. The Ducks won 6-5 in 10 innings and will play Oklahoma on Sunday in an elimination game. ___ AP college sports:

Sonny Gray strikes out 10 in the Cardinals' 2-0 victory over the the Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Sonny Gray struck out 10 while allowing only four singles over seven innings and Willson Contreras had a part in both St. Louis runs as the Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers 2-0 on Saturday. Gray's 19th game with double-digit strikeouts made the 35-year-old right-hander in his 13th big league season the 10th active pitcher with 1,800 career strikeouts. Gray (6-1) threw 64 of 91 pitches for strikes and had only one walk. Ryan Helsley worked the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances to wrap up the Cardinals' seventh shutout of the season. Phil Maton pitched the eighth. The Cardinals went ahead to stay by manufacturing a run without a hit after the second inning nearly started with a home run. Contreras led off with a towering flyball near the left-field pole that prompted a crew chief review to determine it was foul as initially called.
