French skier, 18, dies after crash in training at Val d'Isere
A promising 18-year-old French skier has died during an accident in training, the national ski federation said.
It said Margot Simond died on Thursday at Val d'Isere.
"Our thoughts are with the French Ski Federation, the Savoie Ski Committee, the Club des Sports des Saisies, and the entire ski community, who are deeply affected by the loss of Margot," the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) said in a statement.
FIS offered its condolences and support to the family.
The French under-18 slalom champion was training for this weekend's Red Bull Alpine Park event at Val d'Isere.
The event, created by Olympic champion Clement Noel, combines traditional slalom with freestyle skiing.
Organizers cancelled the event following the accident.

STONEWALL — La Broquerie's École Saint-Joachim and St Pierre-Jolys' École communautaire Réal-Bérard are a pair of small French schools from Manitoba's southeast, but they certainly pack a punch when it comes to fastpitch. The two schools' co-op team blasted through the rest of the competition at the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association softball championships, hosted at Stonewall Quarry Park on Friday and Saturday. An 11-3 mercy rule victory over AAAA school Vincent Massey (Brandon) Vikings capped off an undefeated season for the Braves. 'We're talking about maybe 250 students,' head coach Pat Tetrault said after the game. 'We don't make for quantity we make for quality… There's some tough schools, some good teams out here.' Annabelle Tetrault pitched all five innings of the game for the Braves, before being named the tournament's most valuable player. She gave up six hits and finished with three strikeouts, including two in the first inning after surrendering the home run and one for the final out of the game. 'It's amazing, because I don't think we had to say much. When the ball went over the fence in the first inning, for some reason the team didn't panic,' coach Tetrault said. '(If) we got out of that inning and back on the sticks, we were confident we could get back into this game… next thing you know, we're up six, seven runs and cruising to victory.' École Saint-Joachim have only won a single MHSAA banner in their history, the 2000-01 girls' golf championship. Their one near hiccup came in the first inning of their quarterfinal game early in the morning Saturday, as the team surrendered four runs in the top of the first to Prairie Mountain. Saint-Joachim responded with 10 runs of their own in their first three innings, eventually winning 10-8. That offensive outburst over the season was powered by a deep hitting lineup. Every player on the team was a threat at the plate, no matter what their spot in the batting order was, with all players reaching base at least once in the final. 'They showed up every day wanting to hit, believing in themselves and their buddies,' Tetrault said. 'Everybody that went up to the plate knew if they just tried and concentrated and just swung… they would be successful.' A man was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both are being investigated. Canada's Marco Arop wins short-distance title at Grand Slam Track stop
PHILADELPHIA – Edmonton's Marco Arop won the short-distance title at a Grand Slam Track event after finishing fourth in Sunday's men's 1,500-metre race. Arop finished in a personal-best time of three minutes 35.38 seconds to take five points from the race. He had 17 points altogether in the short distances after winning Saturday's 800 metres. That was one point better than Britain's Josh Kerr, who won the 1,500 in 3:34.44 but was fifth in the 800. Arop, the Olympic silver medallist at the Paris Games, has won all three 800-metre Grand Slam races so far. He finished second overall in short distance at the first two stops on the circuit after finishing sixth and seventh in the 1,500. Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., was fifth and Aaron Brown of Toronto was seventh in Sunday's 100 metres to finish fourth and fifth respectively in the short sprint category. American Kenny Bednarek swept the races after winning Saturday's 200m. Grand Slam Track was started by American track and field legend Michael Johnson, and is in its inaugural season. The first event was in Kingston, Jamaica, the second in Miami, and the fourth and last one will be in Los Angeles June 27-29. All competitors have to compete in two events and are split into categories — short sprints (100, 200), long sprints (200, 400), short hurdles (100 hurdles for women, 110 hurdles for men, 100 for both), long hurdles (400 hurdles, 400), short distance (800, 1,500), long distance (3,000, 5,000) — with a points system in place. Winners get 12 points, second place gets eight points, third gets six points, fourth gets five points, fifth gets four points, sixth gets three points, seventh gets two points and eighth gets one point. The athlete with the most points after competing in both races from each category is named the 'Slam Champion' for their race group.
