Hundreds of Mysterious Giant Viruses Discovered Lurking in The Ocean

Scientists have just discovered hundreds of new giant viruses, in a comprehensive study covering oceans across the globe.
The team behind the study, marine biologist Benjamin Minch and virologist Mohammad Moniruzzaman from the University of Miami, used bespoke computer software to identify the genomes of microbes in seawater samples – including 230 giant viruses previously unknown to science.
Identifying these viruses is a crucial part of understanding life in the ocean, and in particular the survival of marine organisms known as protists – including algae, amoeba, and flagellates.
"By better understanding the diversity and role of giant viruses in the ocean and how they interact with algae and other ocean microbes, we can predict and possibly manage harmful algal blooms, which are human health hazards in Florida as well as all over the world," says Moniruzzaman.
Thanks to rapid recent advances in genome databases, analysis instruments, and computer programs such as the ones used here, the process of discovering giant viruses is now significantly easier than it used to be – giving scientists fresh insights into how these viruses spread and behave.
For example, giant viruses are often responsible for the death of phytoplankton, the tiny, photosynthesizing organisms commonly found in oceans, lakes, and rivers. These organisms are crucial to marine life and food chains, and produce huge amounts of Eartyh's oxygen, so knowing more about the viruses that prey on them could help in protection efforts.
In addition to the 230 new giant viruses, the study also identified 569 new functional proteins, including nine involved in photosynthesis. It seems that in some cases, the viruses are able to hijack the photosynthesis functions of their hosts, in order to get the energy they need to survive.
"We discovered that giant viruses possess genes involved in cellular functions such as carbon metabolism and photosynthesis – traditionally found only in cellular organisms," says Minch.
"This suggests that giant viruses play an outsized role in manipulating their host's metabolism during infection and influencing marine biogeochemistry."
The researchers were able to fit the giant viruses they discovered into two existing virus orders: Imitervirales and Algavirales. These groups use different infection strategies, with Imitervirales the most genetically complex, indicating a more flexible 'life strategy' that potentially allows the virus to survive in a wider variety of hosts.
We know we've only really just scratched the surface when it comes to getting the full picture of the life that lives in the oceans: each drop of seawater is teeming with viruses, and marine life actually helps protect us from many of them.
And there should be a lot more to come too, using the methods outlined in this particular study. There are vast numbers of viruses still waiting to be discovered and cataloged – and to be put into context with ocean ecosystems and health.
"This study allowed us to create a framework to improve existing tools for detecting novel viruses that could aid in our ability to monitor pollution and pathogens in our waterways," says Minch.
The research has been published in Nature npj Viruses.

Prolonged water-only fasting increased inflammation and stress on the body, despite weight loss, a small trial showed. METHODOLOGY: Prolonged fasting — abstaining from energy intake for four or more consecutive days — is used by some as a health intervention; however, the biological effects of this kind of fasting are not well understood. Researchers investigated the effects of a medically supervised water-only prolonged fast for a mean duration of 9.8 days, followed by guided refeeding for a mean of 5.3 days on the plasma proteome. Participants were 20 volunteers with a mean age of 52.2 years and a mean BMI of 28.8. A retrospective cohort analysis of 1422 individuals undergoing modified fasting (average fasting duration of 8.2 days) was also conducted to confirm inflammatory response findings. TAKEAWAY: Prolonged fasting resulted in a 7.7% mean weight loss and significant increases in serum beta-hydroxybutyrate, confirming adherence. Plasma proteomics showed multiple adaptations to prolonged fasting, including preservation of skeletal muscle and bone; enhanced lysosomal biogenesis; increased lipid metabolism via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha signaling; and reduced amyloid fiber formation. In addition, prolonged fasting significantly reduced circulating beta-amyloid proteins Aβ40 and Aβ42, key components of brain amyloid plaques. However, the dietary intervention also induced an acute inflammatory response — elevated plasma C-reactive protein, hepcidin, midkine, and interleukin-8, among others — that was confirmed in the modified-fasting analysis. IN PRACTICE: 'Our hypothesis was that prolonged water fasting would reduce inflammation in the body,' Luigi Fontana, MD, PhD, University of Sydney, Sydney, said in a press release. 'However, we found the opposite was true — that prolonged fasting put stress on the body and increased the number of proinflammatory proteins in the blood, potentially increasing the risk of health issues for people with existing heart and vascular conditions.' SOURCE: Fontana was the principal investigator of the study, which was published online in Molecular Metabolism. LIMITATIONS: Limitations included the study's single-arm design with no control group, the small sample size, and the variability in fasting and refeeding durations decided by the volunteers. At the University of Minnesota research fields, the sun shines on a solution in bloom. "This is an ancient crop," said University of Minnesota researcher Matthew Ott It's called Camelina. "It's similar to canola, so it produces oil, but unlike canola, it survives a Minnesota winter," said Ott. The seeds can be refined into cooking oil and further refined into sustainable aviation fuel. "There have been flights using camelina fuel – soul camelina fuel," said Ott. Ott is part of the team perfecting the crop for primetime. Something to stand up to Minnesota winters that farmers will flock to. They're tiny seeds, but they could have a huge impact. The U.S. Department of Energy says sustainable aviation fuel could cut emissions by up to 94%. And airlines want to cut emissions. Globally, flying accounts for nearly 3% of our air emissions, but the industry wants to get to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with airlines like Delta aiming to use 10% sustainable fuel by 2030. Ott says it could be a big industry for the state. "We're kind of the leader of developing it as a winter crop," said Ott. Farmers across the state are piloting the product right now. Some tell us they use it as a cover crop and love that they can grow a second crop on the same land during the same season. "Soybean can be planted directly in the camelina. They grow together just for a few weeks, and the camelina pods can be harvested over the top of the soybean seedlings," said Ott. He says it also helps prevent runoff of farming fertilizers, improving water quality. And the early bloomer provides nourishment for critical pollinators. "It grows fast," said Ott. Many are hoping the industry will, too. "We're in the early in the process, but we're scaling up," said Ott. Burning this type of fuel still produces emissions, but experts say it significantly cuts emissions when considering the whole life cycle of the product.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 26 of the company's Starlink internet satellites lifted off from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday (June 12) at 9:54 p.m. EDT (6:54 p.m. PDT local time, or 0154 GMT on June 13). The satellites were deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO) about an hour later as planned, the company announced via X. And, with that success, SpaceX's Falcon rocket family hit a very significant round number. And speaking of reusability: The Falcon 9's first stage, serial B1081, came back to Earth on Thursday night, touching down on the droneship "Of Course I Still Love You," which was stationed off the coast of Southern California. It was the 15th launch and landing for the booster, according to SpaceX's web page for the 15-6 mission. SpaceX's record for reusing a Falcon 9 first stage stands at 28 launches. The 26 newly launched spacecraft will soon join more than 7,600 active satellites in the Starlink megaconstellation, the largest satellite network ever assembled. SpaceX, led by billionaire Elon Musk, bills the Starlink service as "high-speed internet around the world" and its satellite megaconstellation does now reach around the planet. A growing number of the spacecraft support direct-to-cell capabilities, enabling texting and internet service from certain smart phones and service providers. With Thursday's launch in the books, SpaceX has now launched 72 Falcon 9 missions in 2025, of which 54 have been in support of the Starlink service. Editor's note: This story was updated at 11:20 a.m. ET on June 13 with the news that this was the 500th completed Falcon mission overall for SpaceX.
