Lamorna Ash began to research her second book, an account of the religious beliefs and experiences of some contemporary Christians in the UK, in 2021. She was 26 years old. She was 'no Christian, no theologian, no philosopher'. She was a freelance journalist and the author of a well-received first book (Dark, Salt, Clear: Life in a Cornish Fishing Village, 2020). She lived in north London and 'knew that miracles and religious experiences were not real', that 'churches were as useless and beautiful as dinosaur bones' and that 'the end of life was synonymous with finality'.
She was, in other words, a reflexive secular humanist, as most of us are, most of the time, in the 21st-century West. The project that became Don't Forget We're Here Forever began with simple journalistic curiosity (or with the need to have a piece to write – often the same thing). Two university friends of hers, formerly comedians, had converted to Christianity and were training to become Anglican priests. Ash had the notion that an article about these friends might reveal something interesting about her generation and its relationship with religious faith.
As, indeed, it does. Why might it be weird, in the 21st century, for two young western men to become Anglican priests? And it
is
weird – or so we feel. Mainstream culture, so-called, looks steadfastly away from religious belief; to be an avowed believer in Christ, in a contemporary liberal society, is to live beyond the pale.
But as Karen Armstrong points out in A History of God (1993), it is not secularism but religious faith that is natural to human beings. Armstrong writes: 'Men and women started to worship gods as soon as they became recognisably human.' She points out that 'our current secularism is an entirely new experiment, unprecedented in human history'. (She adds, drily: 'We have yet to see how it will work.')

Beginning around the end of the 18th century (I generalise hugely, but time is short), the rationalist strain of Protestantism began to turn on faith itself, in a process or series of processes known retrospectively as the Enlightenment. These processes led both to new forms of economic, political and social organisation and to a crisis of meaning that haunts us still.
The root of this crisis was summed up by Nietzsche in 1882: 'belief in the Christian God has become unbelievable'. Or, more pithily: 'God is dead'. Without God, whither meaning? Whither consolation and community? Whither the significance of the transient individual life?
In the third decade of the 21st century (the age of climate change and of the bitter end of the neoliberal experiment), this crisis feels freshly acute. Our sense of the future has collapsed. At such moments, secularism's failure to supply people's lives with positive meaning becomes painfully visible. It is not surprising that at a time like this, people should turn to older sources of meaning.
Don't Forget We're Here Forever is therefore a book for our moment. Its great strength lies not in its certainties but in its uncertainties, in its powerful sense of ambivalence. A book about the mysteries of faith by a convinced atheist might have its value; a book about the mysteries of faith by a full-throated believer has its value for the faithful.
But what we've got here is far more interesting. Don't Forget We're Here Forever is a book about the mysteries of faith by someone who isn't sure if she believes or not; someone who understands the profound allure of religion and who is at the same time deeply uneasy about its potential for error, corruption, oppression; someone who knows that beneath the 'hard shell' of the word 'belief' is a truer meaning: ''I want to believe,' or 'I need to believe,' or 'I rely on believing.''
That Ash begins her book by recounting stories of conversion to Christianity – Saul on the road to Damascus; St Augustine under the fig tree – would seem to tell us that her book is itself a kind of conversion story. And this turns out to be true, in a way. The conversion story has a specific purpose – it is designed to lead people to seek out or expect similar experiences.
But Ash understands that the conversion story is also always a metaphor for any great inner change. Her book, recounting her own inner change, offers another such metaphor. It is an intelligent and sophisticated literary performance, subtle, self-conscious and beautifully wrought.
Ash's investigations into contemporary Christianity in Britain were not, she tells us, 'borne out of any kind of spiritual deficiency or want […] not that my life was without such sinkholes; I just had my own prophylactics going.' Don't Forget We're Here Forever weaves its way delicately between accounts of Ash's personal experiences and her research for the book – she attends an Evangelical Bible study course; she parties till dawn with her friends; she spends time living with other members of Youth With A Mission, a Christian community; she visits the abbey on Iona; she engages in a silent retreat.
Over and over again she hears a version of the same story: a person enduring great suffering or bewilderment is rescued, to a greater or lesser degree, by faith. Ash's own sexuality makes her a sharp critic of the conservative political views that she encounters. But she is a deeply empathetic reporter of the stories that people confide in her. There is no mockery here. There is a great deal of beauty.
Don't Forget We're Here Forever
is less a book about Christianity than it is a book about ambivalence, about 'aporias' (a word Ash uses several times). In going deliberately against the grain of the belief it hungers to experience, the book finds nuanced ways of imagining a Christianity that can be, must be, remade in an unceasing process, to keep it usable by actual human beings in the contemporary world.
It is a literary performance of a high order; it is also a deeply humane book. Through its humanity, it attempts to rescue what is valuable in Christianity – that most human of ideas.

Cork must build two new fire stations to meet growing city demands, major report finds

Cork needs to develop two new fully operational fire stations, including one in the southwest, to bring the total to four full-time stations required to provide fire cover for the expanding city over the next 15 years, a major new report has recommended. The city currently has two full-time fire stations – one on Anglesea Street and one in Ballyvolane. Following the city boundary extension in 2019, the physical size of the city grew fivefold, and its population increased from 125,000 to 210,000. The population is forecast to grow to 350,000 by 2040. In the wake of the boundary extension, a strategic review of the Cork City Fire and Building Control Department was undertaken, prompting Cork City Council to commission a major fire cover review. It was carried out by Crowe Ireland, supported by UK-based spatial data and consultancy specialists Cadcorp. Cadcorp used a modelling tool that incorporates data such as population growth, historic incidents, emergency attendances, and travel times to map future risks. The Fire Cover Review Report, published today, highlights the need for modernisation and strategic investment in the city's fire services infrastructure. Among its key recommendations are: The need for a new full-time fire station in the southwest of the city, to be located between Curraheen and Ballincollig, in addition to the existing stations at Anglesea Street and Ballyvolane. The recommendation for further expansion of the fire service through a three-phase approach, ultimately developing four fully operational stations across the city. The report states that the best location for the fourth station — likely in the city's northwest — will be identified through future modelling based on updated Census data and projected residential and commercial development. The city council welcomed the report, describing it as a comprehensive, evidence-based assessment of fire and emergency service provision for Cork City. It said the findings will ensure the Fire and Building Control Department is equipped to meet the city's evolving needs and that the recommendations will enhance the efficiency, readiness, and community impact of fire and emergency services. The city currently has two full-time fire stations – one in Anglesea St and one in Ballyvolane (picture). Implementing the report will require significant investment in physical infrastructure, including the construction of new stations and the refurbishment of existing ones. The council said it is preparing a funding application to submit to the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management to immediately implement the Phase 1 recommendations. Brian Geaney, the assistant chief executive and chairperson of the Fire Review Steering Group, welcomed the publication of the review. 'This report marks an important step in the process of modernising the city council fire and emergency response service, to future-proof it,' he said. 'Its findings are designed to ensure that these critical services remain equipped to safeguard lives and adapt to evolving risks in an ever-changing landscape.' David Joyce, the council's director of emergency management and climate action, said the review is the culmination of a detailed analysis of extensive spatial and statistical data, including resources, incidents, callouts, road geometry, and speed data. 'This report clearly lays out a future development strategy which details the infrastructure investments which need to be delivered in Cork City to meet the expanding needs of our growing city, its communities and businesses,' he said. Chief Fire Officer David Spillett said he was particularly pleased that the report emphasises the need for additional stations and infrastructure, which will enhance fire service coverage and response capability citywide. 'This enhanced emergency service presence will help meet and future-proof the increasing demands upon the emergency services within Cork City and allow us in the fire service to deliver on our vision of providing an excellent operational service to the public we serve,' he said. How to keep your garden blooming all summer long

Glittering with beauty and laden with promise, the garden in early June is like a table sumptuously set for a glamorous dinner party, repaying all the hours of hard work behind the scenes. If you, for example, pruned and fed your roses to textbook perfection at the beginning of the year, the reward right now is their bounteous, beautiful, scented blooms. Likewise, if you forced yourself reluctantly outdoors to plant seed potatoes back in the damp, icy months of spring, then these plants should already be forming tasty tubers deep beneath the soil. Similarly, if you got young sweet pea plants into the ground back in late March to early April, then they'll be readying themselves to throw out their first delicate, perfumed blooms. It's a similar story for all those tender plants and baby seedlings that we gardeners have coddled through frosty nights and studiously protected from slug damage. Ditto for the summer-flowering bulbs and hardy biennials planted in the muck and mist of last autumn, including alliums, Dutch irises, sweet William, and Canterbury bells now coming into bloom. And ditto for all those summer-flowering herbaceous perennials laboriously lifted and divided what feels like so many moons ago, now starting to lustily flower their hearts out. Photograph: Mint Images/Getty What comes next, however, is the challenge of keeping this very beautiful show on the road. Try to make it a routine, for example, to deadhead faded flowers daily, a simple task that prevents flowering plants from switching their energies to seed production rather than blooming. Likewise, don't presume that rainy weather will be enough to keep summer pots and container-grown plants sufficiently irrigated, especially as their leafy canopy increases over the coming weeks, preventing enough water from reaching their thirsty root systems. Instead, check them every day, sticking your index finger at least 5cm into the compost to accurately gauge if it's sufficiently damp. READ MORE Check the compost's weight too. If it feels light, then there's a risk that the compost is only surface-damp – bad news for plants' probing root systems. If in doubt, fill a wheelbarrow with water, plunge the pot up to its waist, and leave to soak for several hours. This same technique is also a great way to deep-feed plants with a liquid solution of seaweed, a brilliant natural health tonic that helps to boost plant vigour, floriferousness and productivity. The latter is also very effective applied as a foliar feed every 10-14 days throughout the summer, using a watering can or spray. Ireland's variable summer weather poses challenges. It's at this time of year, for example, that many fast-growing herbaceous plants become vulnerable to wind damage The same goes for homemade 'nettle tea' and 'comfrey tea', both of which are rich in beneficial plant nutrients. Just bung plenty of their soft, young leaves into a lidded container, cover with water and leave to stew for several weeks. The resulting foul-smelling liquid will need to be strained and diluted to the colour of weak tea before being applied as a foliar feed, making sure to wear protective clothing to prevent yourself from smelling like a medieval cesspit if you accidentally get it on your skin. All these liquid feeds can also be used to encourage hungry, early-summer flower perennials such as oriental poppy, lupin, geranium, geum, delphinium and astrantia to produce a second flush of flowers. Just cut the plants back hard once they go over, before generously watering and then liquid feeding them. Ireland's variable summer weather also poses challenges. It's at this time of year, for example, that many fast-growing herbaceous plants become vulnerable to wind damage. Likely victims include the tall, brittle flowers of delphiniums and lupins, which can snap in a summer gale if not given sufficient support in the shape of cunningly concealed stakes or purpose-made plant hoops. [ Five life lessons my garden taught me: Nature often has a quiet but not unkind laugh at our expense Opens in new window ] Fast-growing climbers such as clematis, honeysuckle, morning glory and sweet pea can also quickly collapse under their own weight, unless carefully trained up sturdy vertical supports. The same goes for climbing French beans, sugar snap and mangetout peas. Similarly, young courgette plants, not yet fully used to the rigours of an Irish summer, can get tattered and torn unless given a temporary blanket of fleece and some twiggy pea sticks to steady their fleshy, hollow stems and provide a gentle scaffold for their foliage. With plants growing in glasshouses and polytunnels, it's a different story. Here, the greatest risk of harm comes from extremes of temperature and irregular watering. Resist, for example, the urge to keep all doors and vents firmly closed on cooler days. This will only result in overly hot growing conditions and poor ventilation, causing plant stress and even death. When you water, do it generously and thoroughly, the aim being to properly soak the roots, but not so regularly and copiously that you constantly create the kind of very humid, muggy conditions that greatly increase the chances of certain pests and diseases. For the same reason, aim to water only the soil rather than the plants themselves. Hand-collecting slugs and snails from around vulnerable plants at night by torchlight is a useful way to minimise the damage. Also bear in mind that rank, weedy growth and garden 'dumps' of discarded pots and half-used bags of compost are among their favourite hiding places. Think ahead to the dog days of summer. Consider making some late sowings of fast-growing vegetables such as lettuce, annual spinach and oriental salad leaves to fill the growing space left behind by an early crop of potatoes Speaking of which, early June is an excellent time to hoe and hand-weed beds, borders and paths before weeds get badly out of control and start to self-seed, creating further problems. But try to do so cautiously to avoid accidentally uprooting any emerging, desirable, self-seeded seedlings that you might wish to keep. Consider making some late sowings of fast-growing vegetables such as lettuce, annual spinach and oriental salad leaves to fill the growing space left behind by an early crop of potatoes, for example, or sow purple sprouting broccoli for a delicious spring crop. Weigh up, too, any potential weak spots in container displays or flower borders and think of ways that these might be easily and effectively filled later in the season with a few judiciously placed pots of late-flowering varieties such as dahlia, nicotiana, salvia, rudbeckia, sedum and helenium. In this way, your summer garden is guaranteed to go out with a bang, rather than a whimper. Choose a warm, still day, making sure that plants are properly hardened off in advance. It's also a good idea to initially protect young plants with garden fleece. Spiced coconut and cauliflower soup with peanut rayu

Serves : 2 Course : Lunch Cooking Time : 15 mins Prep Time : 5 mins Ingredients 2tbs vegetable oil 350g cauliflower 1 onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 300ml coconut milk 300ml vegetable stock Sea salt and black pepper 1tbs ground coriander ½tbs ground cumin 1tsp chilli flakes For the topping: 1tbs peanut rayu Zest of half a lime Place a saucepan on the heat and add the oil. Chop the cauliflower into small florets and add to the pan along with the onion and garlic. Cook for about five minutes on a medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the veg begins to caramelise evenly, then add the coconut milk and stock and stir to bring together. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in the coriander, cumin and chilli flakes and bring to the boil. Then turn down the heat to low and allow to simmer for 10 minutes, before removing from the heat and allowing to cool slightly. Place in a blender and blend until smooth (add a little more stock if too thick). Spoon into bowls, then top with some peanut rayu and garnish with some lemon zest.
