Al-Ahram Weekly08-03-2025

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) stated Saturday that the female population in Egypt represents 48.6 percent of the country's 107.3 million people, accounting for 52.2 million.
This statement coincides with the International Women's Day celebration on 8 March.
According to the statement, the gender ratio is 106 males for every 100 females.
Data from the 2023/2024 academic year revealed that women's enrollment in higher education reached 49.6 percent, slightly below men's 50.4 percent.
In pre-university education, female enrollment rates varied across stages, recording 23.6 percent in pre-primary education and 104.5 percent in primary education (including repeaters and homeschooled students).
It also accounted for 106.1 percent in preparatory education, 41.6 percent in general secondary education, 16.7 percent in commercial vocational education, and 11.7 percent in industrial vocational education, the CAPMAS added.
Furthermore, according to the statement, dropout rates for females in primary education (0.2 percent) in 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 were lower than for males (0.3 percent) in the same period.
However, female dropout rates in preparatory education were slightly higher at 0.7 percent versus 0.6 percent for males.
Marriage rates increased from 929,428 in 2022 to 961,220 in 2023, while divorce cases decreased from 269,834 in 2022 to 265,606 in 2023.
According to the statement, preliminary data from the 2024 labour force survey indicated that women's participation in the workforce stood at 16.9 percent, compared to 70.3 percent for men.
The unemployment rate for women was significantly higher at 17.1 percent versus 4.2 percent for men.
However, 83.8 percent of working women held permanent positions, compared to 61.4 percent of men.
Meanwhile, in 2023/2024, women held four ministerial portfolios, representing 16 percent of the cabinet.
They also accounted for 20 percent of deputy minister positions in the 2024 government and 33.3 percent of deputy governor roles following the 2024 governorate renewals.

UAE sends over 1,000 tons of food aid to Gaza amid humanitarian crisis - War on Gaza

The UAE sent a new humanitarian aid convoy to the Gaza Strip on Wednesday as part of Operation Chivalrous Knight 3, state news agency WAM reported. The latest convoy delivered 1,039 tons of food supplies and flour as part of the UAE's ongoing efforts to support displaced Palestinians and address the worsening humanitarian crisis. The aid is intended to assist around 1.3 million people in the besieged enclave, where residents face growing shortages of essential goods after months of Israel's war. Under the same operation, the UAE has supported 31 bakeries across Gaza to ensure the continued supply of bread and basic food for families displaced by Israel's brutal war on Gaza. Despite ongoing logistical and security challenges, the UAE has pledged to sustain the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. According to WAM, the operation reflects the UAE's "longstanding and unwavering commitment" to supporting the Palestinian people. In mid-May, Israel slightly eased its blockade of Gaza after nearly three months, allowing a limited amount of humanitarian aid into the territory. Experts have warned that Gaza is at risk of famine if more aid is not brought in. UN agencies and major aid groups say Israeli restrictions, the breakdown of law and order, and widespread looting make it extremely difficult to deliver aid to millions of Palestinians in Gaza. Israeli strikes kill 46 in Gaza, including 31 in a school-turned shelter - War on Gaza

Israeli strikes killed at least 46 people in the Gaza Strip on Monday, including 31 in a school-turned-shelter that was struck as people slept, igniting their belongings, according to local health officials. The strike on the school in the Daraj neighbourhood of Gaza City also wounded more than 55 people, said Fahmy Awad, head of the ministry's emergency service. He said a father and his five children were among the dead. He said the school was hit three times while people slept, setting their belongings ablaze. Footage circulating online showed rescuers struggling to extinguish fires and recovering charred remains. A separate strike on a home killed 15 members of the same family, including five women and two children, according to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, which received the bodies. Palestinian resistance fighters, meanwhile, fired three projectiles from Gaza, two of which fell short within the territory and a third that was intercepted, according to the Israeli military. Israel renewed its war in March after unilaterally ending a ceasefire with Hamas. It began allowing a trickle of humanitarian aid into Gaza last week after blocking all food, medicine, fuel or other goods from entering for two and a half months. Aid groups have warned of famine and say the aid that has come in is nowhere near enough to meet mounting needs. A new aid system supported by Israel and the United States but rejected by U.N. agencies and aid groups is expected to begin operations as soon as Monday, despite the resignation of the American leading the effort, who said it would not be able to operate independently. Israel says it plans to seize full control of Gaza and facilitate what it describes as the voluntary migration of its over 2 million population, a plan rejected by Palestinians and the Arab and international community. Israel's war has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and internally displaced some 90% of its population. Many have fled multiple times. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
